Film description follows"
Nov. 7th: Little Murders (1971) Dir. Alan Arkin
‘Little Murders’ is a black comedy starring Elliott Gould and Marcia Rodd. It is the story of a girl, Patsy (Rodd), who brings home her boyfriend, Alfred (Gould), to meet her severely dysfunctional family amidst a series of random shootings, garbage strikes and electrical outages ravaging the neighbourhood. A great piece of cinema for those who find joy in how pain can make us laugh.

Join us in Solidarity Books, next Wednesday 12th December 8pm for a showing of the powerful documentary Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes' (2006) - 56mins. Dir. Byron Hurt
Film description follows :
"Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes' (2006) - 56mins. Dir. Byron Hurt
Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes provides a riveting examination of manhood, sexism, and homophobia in hip-hop culture. Director Byron Hurt, former star college quarterback, longtime hip-hop fan, and gender violence prevention educator, conceived the documentary as a "loving critique" of a number of disturbing trends in the world of rap music. He pays tribute to hip-hop while challenging the rap music industry to take responsibility for glamorizing destructive, deeply conservative stereotypes of manhood. The documentary features revealing interviews about masculinity and sexism with rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D, Jadakiss, and Busta Rhymes, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, and cultural commentators such as Michael Eric Dyson and Beverly Guy-Shetfall. Critically acclaimed for its fearless engagement with issues of race, gender violence, and the corporate exploitation of youth culture."

'Antifa: Chasseurs de Skins' (2008) 65 mins. Dir. Marc-Aurele Vecchione
"
A French documentary on how groups of mostly black and Arab youth in Paris generated a backlash against the NeoNazi skinhead subculture, and by doing so earned themselves the nickname Chasseurs de Skins or 'Skinhead Hunters'.
Contains interviews with participants recounting the subcultures and the street fights which made up their lives at the time. The film covers the dynamic tensions that go right back to the roots of the skinhead movement, from forerunner of a multicultural working class solidarity to an ongoing filrtation with extreme-right politics.
Here are some of the roots of modern militant antifascism and its grassroots ties to oppositional youth movements such as punk and hip-hop.
"
We will also show one or two short documentaries that look at where and how NeoNazism is emerging and being challenged today.

Join us in Solidarity Books on Wednesday, Feb. 13th ( Tonight! ) at 8pm for a showing of ‘News From Ideological Antiquity' (2010) 83 mins. Dir. Alexander Kluge'
Film description follows :
'News From Ideological Antiquity' (2010) 83 mins. Dir. Alexander Kluge
Alexander Kluge’s magnificent documentary takes as its starting-point an idea that Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein never turned into reality. A few days after the 1929 New York Stock Exchange crash, Eisenstein visited the novelist James Joyce in Paris to discuss an ambitious project for which he had started to make notes. The idea was to make a film version of Karl Marx’s Capital, and the director thought the best way to approach this might be to imitate the narrative structure Joyce used in Ulysses, a day in the life of a worker.
*
We will be screening an abridged theatrical release of Kluge's film at which you'll experience, among other things, much intelligent conversation, readings from Das Kapital by a man dressed as a werewolf and a soundtrack you just can't deny.

This Friday, March 8th sees the fourth year of celebrations on Douglas Street to mark International Women’s Day and the WSM (Workers Solidarity Movement) anticipates a large turnout.
We’ve got a programme covering the whole day, taking in quilting sessions, film screenings, dance and theatre performances, food and of course enough time to catch up with one another in between.
With some help from our neighbours in Cork Open Centre and Very Healthy Food, the programme will run from 10am until 8pm. Give it a glance and drop down at some stage (if not for the whole day). All our events are free to attend, but as ever, donations are really appreciated.
Other events will be running in Mother Jones Flea Market on York Street, so keep an eye out there too. Keep an eye on the Solidarity Books website and Facebook page and the Mother Jones Flea Market Facebook page for more details.
Programme:
-- 10am - 1pm: "Flowers of Hope" – making a quilt for Turkish feminist, Pinar Selek. Very Healthy Food, Douglas Street. Some materials provided – if you can, bring some along.
This session marks the beginning of a project to create a quilt that will be sent to Pinar.
Pınar Selek is a sociologist, pacifist, anti-militarist, feminist and writer. She is well-known for her prolific work on the rights of vulnerable communities in Turkey.
*Selek has been prosecuted over a 15-year period in Turkey in connection to an explosion that occurred at a bazaar in Istanbul in 1998.
Her prosecution of is linked to her work in the mid 90s when as a sociologist researching Kurdish issues, she interviewed members of the banned Kurdish Worker's Party (PKK). Tried and acquitted of all charges on three occasions, her most recent acquittal was amended in November 2012 by the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court, which sentenced her to life in prison in January 2013.
-- 3pm: ‘The Forgotten Maggies’ (2009) 51 mins.
Documentary telling the stories of four women whose lives were marked by their forced placement in Ireland’s Magdalene laundries.
-- 4:30pm: 'X is for anonymous' (2012) 33 mins.
Three student filmmakers interrogate why successive governments have failed in their duty to another generation, and whether the next generation can hope for this much anticipated legislation.
Both films in Solidarity Books – discussion to follow each.
-- 6pm: Butoh dance performance by Claire Keating followed by a Bellydance performance by Louise Devoy.
-- 6:30pm: Sawa Le! perform “On Our Way” (Act One)
Sawa Le! means "Together With" in Swahili and Irish. Sawa Le! Arts Collective is a migrant-led arts group formed in 2011 by five African Women who wanted to write stories and express themselves though drama. The group aims to provide a space for drama for migrant and indigenous Irish people who wish to work together.
“On Our Way” is an ongoing drama project exploring the lives of African women on their journey to a new life in Ireland.
All performances in Cork Open Centre, 77 Douglas St (just opposite Solidarity Books/up from Very Healthy Food).
-- 7pm: Food and chat back at Solidarity Books.
The Veg Out! team will provide some nibbles but we’d encourage anyone who can to bring something along to share.
The packed programme of events will be wrapping up to get to the Mother Jones Flea Market by 9pm for a piece by Lady Grew about the life of Mother Jones.
Why We Celebrate
International Women's Day is a celebration that takes place every year on the 8th March. It is an unapologetically political event that first emerged in 1910 when Clara Zetkin proposed that it be celebrated every year around the world at the Second International Conference of Socialist Women, subsequently to be celebrated by millions of women the world over.
International Women’s day is a day where we get to highlight those women who are politically active, those who are fighting in their communities, and those who know that there can be a better world – whether created through daring art, politics or the simple yet radical acts of solidarity and caring.
International Women’s Day can be seen as an event to combat women's oppression globally, but many issues still remain for women in Ireland. Exploitation of migrant workers, difficulties for single mothers and a complacent non-recognition of care work are compounded with Irish women not having the basic rights over their bodies and sexuality. With the issue of abortion still looming in Ireland there are many fights to be had here at home.
With this year’s programme in Solidarity Books, we aim to highlight some of the above issues, but also to celebrate the passion and creativity that are as necessary to our idea of what revolution might mean today.
We hope that this diversity is reflected in the programme we’ve put together and that you’ll join us on Douglas Street on Friday the 8th.

Join us in Solidarity Books on Wednesday April 3rd 8pm for a showing of 'Blue Gold - World Water Wars' (2008) Dir. Sam Bozzo 90mins.
"Blue Gold - World Water Wars (2008) Dir. Sam Bozzo 90mins.
Wars of the future will be fought over water as they are over oil today. As the source of human survival enters the global marketplace and political arena, corporate giants private investors and corrupt governments vie for control of our dwindling supply, promoting protests, lawsuits and revolutions from citizens fighting for the right to survive. This film examines environmental and political implications of the planets diminishing water supply and highlights success stories of water activists from around the world.
This film is of particular significance in Ireland at the moment with the planned introduction of water meters and private companies queueing up to seek to profit off what was once seen as a common resource. "

They will also be accompanied by some local Cork wordsmiths. Copies of their book will be on sale on the day. Entry is free but as ever, donations are much appreciated. Hope to see you down there...
Tuesday Knights
The Tuesday Knights recently launched their first anthology of poetry “Wayword Tuesdays” in Charlie Byrne’s bookshop in Galway. This new collection of poetry features the work of 7 Galway based writers, Stephen Byrne, Bernie Ashe, Anne Irwin, Eileen Ní Shuilleabháin, Ruth Quinlan, Dave Donovan and Breege Wardein.
The group grew out of the Over The Edge Tuesday workshops in the Galway Arts Centre with the well- known poet and critic Kevin Higgins. There under his gentle and subtle wielding of the baton the featured writers refined their individual voices and artistic vision.
This new publication is an eclectic mix of styles, themes and tones that reflects the results their journeys thus far. Ranging from the large scale to the intimate, the poems here cover a diverse range of topics from war, displacement, childhood to love and loss. In the work the group sources inspiration in landscape both the familiar world of the everyday, the more exotic territories of warmer climes and the interior landscape of the dream world, relationships, literature, history and migration.
The poets have had their work published in many literary magazines and journals. Ropes, Emerge Literary Magazine, The Rusty Nail, Apercus Quarterly, Boyne Valley, Crannog, Galway Literary Review, Revive Literary Magazine.
Each has been a featured reader at Over the Edge, Galway. They have read at Volvo Ocean race Galway 2012, N.U.I.G. Fringe Festival 2012, Alumni Literary Evening N.U.I.G.2011. Dublin Vincent de Paul, Clarenbridge Arts festival 2011, and also so far this year, in Letterkenny and Derry.

Join us in Solidarity Books on Wed. May 22nd 9pm for a ThreePenny showing of "Network (1976)" Dir: Ingmar Bergman Stars: Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch
Film description follows :
" A TV network cynically exploits a deranged ex-TV anchor's ravings and revelations about the media for their own profit.
In the 1970s, terrorist violence is the stuff of networks' nightly news programming and the corporate structure of the UBS Television Network is changing. Meanwhile, Howard Beale, the aging UBS news anchor, has lost his once strong ratings share and so the network fires him. Beale reacts in an unexpected way. We then see how this affects the fortunes of Beale, his coworkers (Max Schumacher and Diana Christensen), and the network.
The film won four Academy Awards, in the categories of Best Actor (Finch), Best Actress (Dunaway), Best Supporting Actress (Straight), and Best Original Screenplay (Chayefsky).
In 2000, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 2002, it was inducted into the Producers Guild of America Hall of Fame as a film that has "set an enduring standard for U.S. American entertainment".[2] In 2006, Chayefsky's script was voted one of the top-ten screenplays by the Writers Guild of America, East.
In 2007, the film was 64th among the 100 greatest American films as chosen by the American Film Institute, a ranking slightly higher than the one AFI had given it ten years earlier.
