You have to do extra modules if you can't get COOP? :o

Yeah. Three modules I believe. From what I've heard, they're generally modules that are pretty useless to your degree.

Exactly, apparently they don't want us to have an "unfair advantage" in 4th year over those who got coop. Pretty ridiculous considering their coop gives them a HUGE advantage over us in general.

Following up on the towel predicament, €12 in the Arena for a "Large Towel". It's about half the size of a normal bath towel. :(

Can someone tell me where the online cv is on student records or is it disabled until the results are out?

    Use the "test" student records.

does anyone else find the mass "to: all" email about the Lynx Space Competition incredibly irritating?
they cant just start mass forwarding requests for votes in a competition, it sets a precedent. It'd be good if the policy on forwarding emails was consistently adhered to, these kinds of email annoy me a lot.

That didn't bother me too much, but I get were you're coming from.
The ones from reception about people looking for lifts home at the weekends were pretty ridiculous though.

See the thing is there could easily be 100 people in UL that have entered this Space flight yoke. They're gonna want to get those votes too, and there is no way ( I hope) that the SAA are forwarding 100 emails. thats going to leave a few people who asked for votes feeling hard done by.

Is there any way to be removed from the lists? for example ive heard enough about the Deloitte internships etc, I don't need monthly reminders.

The only way off is to leave college

    Dear Student Academic Administration,

For five and a half years I've emailed enquiries on various matters to SAA on matters pertaining to UL which have gone unanswered, yet SAA feels that it is an appropriate use of their time and the All Students mailing list to spread around a link for some Lynx promotion a student is trying to win?
If I send links for them, can you encourage all students to subscribe to my YouTube, Twitter and WordPress perhaps? Cheers :)

(I've yet to hear back from them)

It's really bad form. Admin in UL is just on a constant decline...

I've mentioned it elsewhere but I will mention it again here.

RE the emails sent by UL staff to students, for example SAA or Reception.

In UL undergrads are quite lucky to be treated with a lot if respect by most staff. Most people working in the University seem to want to help students as much as possible, I think it is very admirable that they do, and continue to do for the most part. There are many other Universities that consider undergrads to be the bottom rung of the ladder and nothing more. Undergrads often don't seem to do much to help that image either.

To be completely fair, many students can be extremely obnoxious and self righteous in their emails to University staff, whether that is teaching staff or admin, as if students have a divine right to be here and that staff are slaves to the students.

And a student email was always intended to be a method of communication for internal university business: thats why we get them. Its not a personal email address for the LOLs. I would be more annoyed at students emailing all students about loosing their virginity in Milford Grange last night. The messages you get to that are generally notices from the university in some fashion and if you don't want to read it, or don't think its relevant then just mark as read and move on - just like a notice board. I think messages about lost medication etc. are perfectly reasonable and helpful. I appreciate that UL staff would do that for their students.

a devine right to be here? I think I get that when I pay my fees.

I'm always respectful to staff in my correspondence with them. getting spam though is not something I appreciate. would it be appropriate if I forwarded my junk mail to them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭AlwaysRight

Well first off I will apologise for the term divine right. I can see people will take issue with it but I will defend my sentiment behind the term.

The "fee" that you pay doesn't go direct to the University so its not like you are paying directly like a customer. Additionally it actually costs far in excess of what you are paying anyway so you are still getting a couple of grands worth for free essentially. It is a privilege to be here, in my opinion. Lots of people, world wide, don't get the opportunity. (Unless you failed a year and are repeating or are in any particular circumstance where you must pay full fees, as opposed to the student contribution)

I am really contesting that it is spam at all considering the function of the University email address - as a notification tool for University 'stuff'. And I am not at at all saying that you or all students are not respectful and polite in their correspondence, rather that there are quite a few that are not so nice in how they communicate.

I'm sorry... but how is an email from Student Academic Administration forwarding a mail canvassing for votes not spam?

No need to be sorry. :)

They were just trying to be nice. A student trying to get into space wanted help from the other students. They sent it out. I didn't feel adversely effected, didn't try to take my money or sell me viagra, or give me a virus. I am happy enough have opened it, read it and moved on. It was a notice I didn't find relevant, not the end of the world and it certainly shouldn't ruin anyones day.
