How does positive discrimination not make any sense? The PSNI had a quota system in favour of Catholics for damn good reasons, did it not make any sense?

On the issue of race it is only ever positive to discriminate against white people but negative to discriminate against any other race, and the irony is the people who support this "positive discrimination" say they are not racist.

On the issue of discrimination it is only ever positive to discriminate against white, Protestant and upper class people, but negative to disciminate against any other group. 100 years ago many people (mostly white, Protestant and Upper class people) would have thought and said that. (You should read stuff said by MP's about Ireland 100 and 200 years ago)

Sometimes positive discrimination is necessary, but I think it should be judged on the merits of each case, not introduced as a general law, nor dismissed as nonsense or racist or prejudiced.

Positive discrimination can serve a purpose, dismissing it as making no sense well, makes no sense.

I have no idea what that means

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

In my view there is a difference between positive discrimination in organizations/systems where there was a deliberate process of exclusion and discrimination rather than positive discrimination in relation to to groups that are under represented due to not meeting requirements (which is not saying there isn't a problem with this occur but that the issue is one of social investment) or lack of engagement by that group for social reasons not relating to any direct discrimination by the organization/system, an example of that to my mind would be the idea of gender quotas for politicians.

It's fine to be racist towards white people but never POCs.
Also i can't believe all the communists here, sickening to read people say it's good to drag those better off down to lower levels. If you are smarter, work harder than someone else and make good life choices you should never have "positive discrimination" targeted towards you to artificially raise those more stupid, with a worse work ethic and who make bad life choices.
I am a racist, i believe European or Western 'civilisation'/people is far superior to all others.

Positive discrimination originally cropped up to ensure that there was better representation of people of colour in positions of responsiblity. This annoyed a few white folk and they complained "if the person is good enough for the job, then they should get it, whatever their colour is". Ah, if only. But you see, for generations, merit and ability weren't a factor when it came to things like promotion, or even employment. Old, irrational prejudices held sway and people of colour were not allowed to "better" themselves.

In an ideal, non racist world, such a concept would not exist. But we don't live in an ideal world.

Although, I imagine being a highly paid college graduate, you can afford to dismiss the idea?

The only thing I'm disagreeing with is the idea that 'positive discrimination' can exist. Any policy that discriminates by race is RACIST.

If you support positive discrimination, you are a racist.

I don't mean that as an insult. Maybe the best response to past racism is more racism in the opposite direction. Maybe it will only fester more racism in the future....

    But it is absolutely racist.

    Racism is wrong 100%.

I am probably just very unlucky usually when I meet black people they are skipping me in the queue, robbing a parking space I have my indicator on for, hitting me with their shopping trolley, or in the case of my neighbour when I lived in another part of Dublin blocking my drive, shouting loud at the early hours of the morning, making sarcastic comments to people, in my case (tell your girlfriend I was asking for her) I could just go on and on to be honest. I have never had a nice experience with a black person I am just unlucky I guess. When I meet Asian/ Indian or any other nationalities they usually are holding a door for me being polite, friendly etc Much friendlier than lots of the Irish I must add. I probably come across quite strong at times but these are my

Are you not living in the past a bit here wiley ? None of this stuff goes on anymore. It should have never happened but I think we are all paying for it today in one way or another.

I'll indulge you in your 'sophistry' just this once.

Stating a preference for Rum over Vodka has nothing whatsoever to do with racial predjudice.
Feel free to prefer dark rum to white rum, at the very basic level 'white rum' won't feel offended.
I take it by your reference to TV's you mean televisions rather than transvestites, if the former then I'm sure you'll be fine, again no television that I'm aware of has ever complained of being demeaned, slighted or abused because of skin colour/ethnic difference.
If the latter, then I really don't know why you would want someone to give you "10 TV's with different properties", perhaps you're just being greedy, I don't know much about transvestism, but if that's what floats your boat, good luck to you!

"I love the way Asian girls look"

Do you mean someone from Mumbai, Phnom Penh, Tehran or Sapporo, you've cast your net quite widely there, is there a specific look exclusive to your idealised version of 'Asian Girls' which can't be found in Europe, Africa or elsewhere. If so, what is it?

"I'd like a Japanese wife because she's less likely to die of heart disease than a white chick"

Personally I believe that love, compatibility, a shared sense of humour and so on trump an actuarial analysis of life expectancy due to potential cardiac arrest any day.
    Call me old-fashioned.

"Gee, I think we need more of race X"
    Who said the above?
    Adduce

    Finally.
    Oxford Consise English Dictionary

    RACISM

1a a believe in the superiority of a particular race; prejudice based on this.
b antagonism towards, or discrimination against, other races, esp. as a result of this.
2 the theory that human abilities etc. are determined by race.

I get that you typed a lot; but I feel like you didn't really address the point of my post. I don't see the point in having a conversation about what particular Asian girl fetish I have or what my favorite TV is - so I'll skip that. But I will address:

""Gee, I think we need more of race X"
    Who said the above?
    Adduce"

As others have mentioned, there are countless examples of people who consider themselves 'not racist' who discriminate by race, giving preferential treatment to members of a particular race. Any of the many countries that have some form of 'positive discrimination' are actively saying 'Gee, I think we need more of race X'.

You can Google and get a list. It is quite extensive.

And your pasted definition of RACISM includes....pretty much everyone. There are lots of studies that show measurable differences in human abilities based on race, even if race is more difficult to define that just skin color. There are also studies that show measurable differences by race (whether or not it is correlation or causation is another debate).

Certain human abilities are determined by race, at least for any sufficiently large group of people. That means scientists and the entire medical community are racist. And anyone who accepts their findings are racist.

Certain human behaviors are, at least, correlated with race. I won't say they are caused, because I don't know. But we see strong correlations between a lot of stuff and race. Some good, some bad, some mostly irrelevant.
