As I just got a hr monitor recently I did my first mile the other night based on staying at/below my Max Aerobic Heart Rate (of 143) it felt very slow at first, and while I did speed up a little while maintaining the heart rate it stayed much slower than my usual 'slow' pace. I'll be interested to try and do some long runs on the basis of the heart rate monitor.

There's some interesting information about max aerobic hr at these links which a fast running buddy of mine sent on to me:

    http://www.markallenonline.com/maoArticles.aspx?AID=2

    http://philmaffetone.com/180formula.cfm

Hey there, I'd read the Mark Allen "Working your heart" article just recently. According to his formula, my Maximum Aerobic Heart Rate is 128 bpm or so (I'm over 50). I don't normally use a HRM but gave it a go today. As I suspected, 128bpm does not seem achievable for me - running very slowly (6:30/km = 10:24/mile ) my heart rate is 147 or so.

To stick to 128 I'd be doing a brisk walk! What's the story - should I see a cardiac specialist?

The 305/310 and the 4's are ridiculously expensive though.

The hr monitor is great when used properly particularly for knowing your limits when racing. If you are upgrading the best value is on amazon.co.uk shipped via parcel motel... Or so Santa told me!
I got a 305 with hrm etc perfect cond for 70 on adverts. There is one for sale there at moment but think he is asking 120.

13 miles for me tomorrow, p&d week 2. I missed a 10 miler on Thursday due to a crappy head cold, felt so guilty for skipping a run! Ah well my tight calves thanked me for it and I enjoyed a comfortable 5 miles today. Onwards and upwards :)

8 miles done this morning at 7.12 avg pace, done it as a tester for 10 miler in March. It felt comfortable the whole way through to be honest, hopefully be bit more in the legs come March.

They're not too bad on Amazon if you're willing to bide your time - the 310 was £169 up to the other day, compared to the 10 for £99 it's a much more comprehensive device. But Amazon prices fluctuate so be prepared to be patient.

I got the 410 on Amazon half price a couple of months ago £179 - they do run sales fairly often.

    That made me laugh!

59 miles in 12 days? Wouldn't say I've nearly that done. No LSR last week due to xc race, about 24m so far this week.
