Why do DVDs take such a long time to come out?

I want Horrible Histories series 4 on DVD, but it finished on TV months ago and the DVD still isn't out. And now that Merlin has finished, I want to get the complete set series 1-5 on DVD but god knows how long before that's released. Why on earth does it take so long? It must be possible to release them sooner because Downton Abbey was released on DVD one week after it finished. (Not that I would buy that - I only know because I saw it advertised.)

    Have you tried a laxative?

Game of thrones series 2 isn't out until February after finishing in may I think. The reason for it was so ABC could do a re-run right before season 3 and still get a shit load of viewers and therefore ad/sponsorship royalties.

    People still buy DVD's

I want Game of Thrones as well. I've got quite a crush on Jaquen H'Gar. It must be nice having a man who you can just go up to and whisper a name in his ear and he'll bump them off for you.

Why? Don't tell me the world has moved on to some new-fangled b@ll@x again. What do people do now instead of DVDs then?

Give the door a good strong yank after you press the eject button and they'll come out a bit faster.

Game of thrones goes on PirateBay the night it comes out in America. Same with everything else really... :o

Better than watching films off a ****ing cloud. Though cinema and blu-ray are still tops.

Where feck were you? Blu rays have been out for years!

Tbh if you've a full HDTV I don't know why people play DVDs on them, it's such a waste.

I have nearly 900 movies, not a disk in sight.

Some of those movies are in glorious BluRay quality, no streaming, no disks, just download once

Any TV Show is available in 720p HDTV on the interwebs an hour later

    Blu-Ray?

You mean you have to put a disk in a machine??

    That's like a baby's toy...

    Media player all the way...:pac:

Sounds too high-tec for me, I can only do easy stuff.

You'll never ever get the same quality of picture and sound though. Plus if I'm actually going to buy a movie, as apposed to my usual pirating, I'd always pick the disk over the download as there's no comparison :p

Well then move to BluRay, it's the same idea as DVD but HD quality.

I'm not a lawyer - but in similar situations I've resorted to downloading the broadcast version (which people have undoubtedly uploaded to the internet). Then, when the DVD is available, I purchase the DVD set.

The DVD set is better quality and has additional content I want, and I want to support media produces that I enjoy....so I end up paying for the license to watch the show.

At which point, I back up the DVD and throw out the physical disks. The end result I that I've paid for the content and I have it in digital form on my computer. I just don't wait quite as long.

    * * * I'm not recommending you do this if your country of residence does not allow it. I was on my private yacht in international waters while downloading from a satellite feed...making it perfectly legal. * * *

I agree, the 18gb avatar 1080p rip I have doesn't look as good as watching it on bluray on my ps3....

There has to be some form of compression....

That is absolute bollocks, it's the same thing, what's on the disk is what gets uploaded to the internet. I have a few BluRay 1080p movies here 25GB big, amazing quality

Ahhh what a chore it is to just press the eject button and pop the disk in the player. :pac:

Hell there would be no blu-rays to rip off of if everyone had that same mentality. The film itself is not the be all and end all either, I love everything that goes into the movies that Criterion and Masters of Cinema put out. Great cover art, interesting and informative essays, short films included and a lot more extra stuff. Not only that but films and music tend to feel a whole lot more disposable once you can get what you want, when you want.

That's very true. But there's no better way to get a copy of American TV shows months before they come out here or on DVD.

Would you not give them to your local charity shop if you are going to throw out a perfectly good disc.

delaying the various froms of releases over a period allow them to maximise revenue from reruns; dvd sales (either the 3 eps per disk or whole series); box set.
same as films and cinema -> box office -> dvd -> network releases

easy enough to understand but a pain in the ***

SKY are averaging £550 per customer per year

most of the non-sport pay channels have far less than 1% of the viewership
so not everyone has seen it, the plan is to milk as much as you can for premium channels in the 6 months or so before it goes to DVD / netflix

Downton Abbey had 7.9 million viewers and is free to air
everyone's already seen it , get the box set out for christmas

    blame the marketing droids

A blu ray is 50GB for a reason as everything is uncompressed and therefore better quality on them. If there wasn't a difference the disks wouldn't be above 25GB, but all big moves are.

They'll be good quality but not as good as the blu ray in PQ and sound.

Thank you! Not a single 'coming out' reference until now. I thought AH was going to disappoint me :(
