Why do DVDs take such a long time to come out?

I want Horrible Histories series 4 on DVD, but it finished on TV months ago and the DVD still isn't out. And now that Merlin has finished, I want to get the complete set series 1-5 on DVD but god knows how long before that's released. Why on earth does it take so long? It must be possible to release them sooner because Downton Abbey was released on DVD one week after it finished. (Not that I would buy that - I only know because I saw it advertised.)

Game of thrones series 2 isn't out until February after finishing in may I think. The reason for it was so ABC could do a re-run right before season 3 and still get a shit load of viewers and therefore ad/sponsorship royalties.

Game of thrones goes on PirateBay the night it comes out in America. Same with everything else really...

Where feck were you? Blu rays have been out for years!

Tbh if you've a full HDTV I don't know why people play DVDs on them, it's such a waste.

I have nearly 900 movies, not a disk in sight.

You'll never ever get the same quality of picture and sound though. Plus if I'm actually going to buy a movie, as apposed to my usual pirating, I'd always pick the disk over the download as there's no comparison

I'm not a lawyer - but in similar situations I've resorted to downloading the broadcast version (which people have undoubtedly uploaded to the internet). Then, when the DVD is available, I purchase the DVD set.

The DVD set is better quality and has additional content I want, and I want to support media produces that I enjoy....so I end up paying for the license to watch the show.

At which point, I back up the DVD and throw out the physical disks. The end result I that I've paid for the content and I have it in digital form on my computer. I just don't wait quite as long.

I agree, the 18gb avatar 1080p rip I have doesn't look as good as watching it on bluray on my ps3....

There has to be some form of compression....

That is absolute bollocks, it's the same thing, what's on the disk is what gets uploaded to the internet. I have a few BluRay 1080p movies here 25GB big, amazing quality

Hell there would be no blu-rays to rip off of if everyone had that same mentality. The film itself is not the be all and end all either, I love everything that goes into the movies that Criterion and Masters of Cinema put out. Great cover art, interesting and informative essays, short films included and a lot more extra stuff. Not only that but films and music tend to feel a whole lot more disposable once you can get what you want, when you want.

That's very true. But there's no better way to get a copy of American TV shows months before they come out here or on DVD.

most of the non-sport pay channels have far less than 1% of the viewership
so not everyone has seen it, the plan is to milk as much as you can for premium channels in the 6 months or so before it goes to DVD / netflix



Downton Abbey had 7.9 million viewers and is free to air
everyone's already seen it , get the box set out for christmas

A blu ray is 50GB for a reason as everything is uncompressed and therefore better quality on them. If there wasn't a difference the disks wouldn't be above 25GB, but all big moves are.

They'll be good quality but not as good as the blu ray in PQ and sound.

Usually when a show is Shiite they couldn't be arsed getting it out and usually wait until some day they have bugger all else to do before they release it and all the shows you listed are pure unadulterated Shiite and so that's the reason.

I'm pretty sure that is illegal; but even if it isn't, it seems wrong to me. I throw out the physical disks - but I want to keep the digital copy I ripped onto my storage device. So I still 'have' the files and I'll watch them.

If I give away/sell the DVDs it seems wrong to still keep a copy.

Actually if anything the gap between cinema and DVD release is shortening. Especially with independent films.

For example Irony Sky and Human Centipede came out on DVD within a few weeks of their cinema premiere. Obviously a film that's doing great work at the box office will be held on for a few months though.
