Attitudes towards sexual perversions

    Homosexuality was decriminilised 20 years ago this year, and people seem to be coming around to the idea that members of the LGBT community aren't freaks of nature, but what about other perverts and sexual deviants?

    Foot fetishists, sadomasochists, people who want to be splattered with custard, you name it and there is someone out there who gets off on it. Look at this thread here on After Hours where people say they get all giggitty-minded by the back of a guys wrist or a girls neck or whatever. What's the difference?

    The diversity of human sexuality is an amazing thing, and provided that everyone involved is acting on their own consent what's the difference between a person who likes to nibble on someones neck and someone who wants to put on a nappy and be treated like a baby? Yes, one is rarer than the other, but does that mean it should be ridiculed or abhored?

    You're comparing sexual orientation with fetishes, the two things are completely different.
    There wont ever be a day when a grown man dressing like a baby is considered normal sexual practice, but doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.

    and there is nothing perverse about nibbling on someones neck or looking at wrists, but there is about skat and pissing games. sure its normal to some people or at least enjoyed at some level, but you cant say those things are in the same category.

    I'm fully aware that they are different, I started the thread to ask why people consider one to be worse or better than the other.

    I'm not sure that the question of whether we have a "right" to our emotional reactions to anything at all has any meaning. Is a "right" to feel disgust any different from a "right" to feel elation, or hope, or hunger, or pain?

    The question is not whether you have a right to feel disgust; it's whether you have a right to require others to deal with/address your disgust.

    Your disgust, surely, is your problem. If you feel disgust at my sexual orientation (or appearance, or accent, or anything else) then you have to deal with that yourself; you can't expect me to change or conceal my orientation, appearance, accent etc so that you can avoid feelings of disgust or distaste. Assuming you're an adult, it's not my duty to massage your feelings.

    Not normal.
    Mathematically anything "abnormal" is that which falls outside the mean.
    Being left-handed, blonde, blue-eyed, etc is "abnormal"

    You will probably never "have" to live in a world where you say that you love when your girlfriend sh!ts on you face.
    I hope I never live in a world where it's perfectly normal to say "my girlfriend's tits aren't big enough for me. I'm going to recommend she has chemicals stuffed into them to make them bulbous".

    We develop taboos against **** and piss for a reason; close contact with them is dangerous to health - our own, and that of others. And sexual paraphilias involving **** and piss probably derive at least some of their force precisely from their transgressive nature - they're "naughty" because they involving breaching conventions and taboos which are not arbitrary but which exist for good reason.

    This is plainly not true of a sexual interest in people's necks or wrists. Whatever the basis of this paraphilia, it's not transgression.

    Which means that it's natural for most of us to feel distaste for scatological paraphilias; that very feature is part of what make the attractive to the paraphiliac.

    Depends on the context. If you're saying this as a confession/examination of your own inadequacies/challenges/sexual attitudes/whatever, and you are not emotionally imposing on someone by doing so, that's fine. On the other hand, if you're saying this in an attempt to control their behaviour, or in support of restrictions on their behaviour, not so fine.

    Common sense applies: in general you should be slow to tell people that they disgust you. You'd need a very specific context in which this would be an appropriate thing to say and, even then, you'd need to communicate exactly what you were saying, and explain your need to say it, very carefully.

    because the reason they are enjoying the two examples I gave are the domination elements, they want to be dominated [some really get off on that, usually people in jobs who are in jobs where they give all the orders and others have to follow] so this is a psychological domination that they get to submit to whether they like it or not once they decide they are going to submit all bets are off, others can do disgusting things with/to them once an idea of the boundaries have been set at some level before hand in some way

    whereas nibbling on a neck is just nibbling on a neck and is know to be an erogenous zone unlike rubbing **** all over yourself and thats they key very few of those people will rub **** allover themselves, its the domination element that does it for them

    You can embark on a long and expensive course of counselling to try and understand the basis for your feelings of disgust about homosexuality. But, if they aren't causing you a great problem, you may not need to. Are they getting in the way of healthy relationships with your own romantic partners and with family and friends? Are they leading you into inappropriate or destructive behaviour? Are they causing you profound unhappiness in some other way? No? Then I think its perfectly fine to note them, accept that you ought not to impose them on others, put them to one side and move on.
