The oldest woman in Ireland has died, long live Ireland's oldest women.

By 2050 these will be a dime a dozen. Centurians are expected to be about 10% of the population.

Yeah right. The day 1 in ten is half horse, half human, I'll eat my hat. Next you'll be saying loads of people will live to be 100 in the future.

Yeah but if obesity is anything to go by most people will actually be dying younger whilst the healthy ones become the exception and live longer.

It was a lot easier if you didn't have to fight in it, though.

    True dat.

He can still remember which end of the pitch in Mullingar he scored a goal and a point for the Galway Minor football team (against Cavan I think)...

Life expectancy is still rising. You are right that a good percentage of illness and death is caused by lifestyle future generations could fix that with:

    a) lower insurance costs for fit people.
    b) very high taxes on sugar, and sweet stuff.

RTE are reporting the death of Mary Byrne 108 of Co. Laois. Ireland's oldest person.

And in other news, Ireland's youngest person has just been born.

    Coincidence?

I don't know why a comment like that is necessary.

And FYI women in Ireland were conservative up until the 1990s.

Imagine, the year she was born was the same year as the Russian/Japanese war started, construction started on the Panama Canal, and the Ford Motor company started production.

She lived through wars, saw a man walk on the moon, remembered a time when mobile phones seemed like science fiction, and grew up when few Irish people had been inside a car or even seen one. She was already 18 when the State was founded.

    She lived through interesting times.

    Unfortunately in laois though...

Old? That's the fat bitches weight in stones!

I presume this was meant to be humourous but I'm struggling to find it so.

Very sad about this. I knew Mary personally and know her 2 sons and grandchildren. Her daughter died 2 or 3 years ago and she was well into her 70's which is mad when you think of it

    RIP Mrs Byrne.

He knows damn well what day it is. His mind is as sharp as feck!
His body itself isn't so good...

Well now, thats a very general statement. You have NO idea what women got upto prior to 1990...neither do I. FYI, your statement is irrelevent.

    Happy New Year

Id say more a case of bad taste than too far. If that is too far for you, you have no experience of the internet.

    Happy New Year.

RTE are reporting the death of Mary Byrne 108 of Co. Laois. Ireland's oldest person.

This is a sad occasion for her friends and family.

However, I remain a glass half full type of person and immediately I thought of the new title holder (unnamed) who is celebrating on the double tonight.

RTE should have turned up at the new holder's house with the "good news" (obviously not for Mary) and filmed the reaction. Obviously taking care not to knock too loudly on the front door for obvious reasons. ;)

Thaaaaatsss sosososossooooo sad :( Why do bad things have to happen!

    xoxo :)

In fairness, when I'm 108, I'll be begging for deaths sweet release.
At 108, I'll be checking stem cell research; complete new body, bar the brain :D

    RIP Mrs Byrne.

I'm not saying this to take away from the situation but I wouldn't find something like this sad, Mary was 108, to say she lived a full life is an understatement!

It should be celebrated by those close to her, as someone said here, the amount of world events she has lived through us crazy, especially the founding of the state!

    R.I.P Mary

    RIP Mary.

    What great innings.

Although obviously it is sad that a family has lost its matriarch, it is nice to see she saw out her final days with her family around her.

Some people are not so fortunate.

    RIP in Mary!

My mother's aunt is 105 (or 104) at the moment. Wonder if she'll be named the next oldest woman..

Probably not the same woman but there's a woman near Tuam who wouldn't be far off that either.
