Ireland's oldest woman has passed away

RTE are reporting the death of Mary Byrne 108 of Co. Laois. Ireland's oldest person.

This is a sad occasion for her friends and family.

However, I remain a glass half full type of person and immediately I thought of the new title holder (unnamed) who is celebrating on the double tonight.

RTE should have turned up at the new holder's house with the "good news" (obviously not for Mary) and filmed the reaction. Obviously taking care not to knock too loudly on the front door for obvious reasons. ;)

I remember reading that the death rate of elderly people and terminally ill patients spiked after the turn of the millennium in 2000.

These folk were holding on to life to see in the new millennium and then let go. Fascinating and a little sad all at once.

Imagine, the year she was born was the same year as the Russian/Japanese war started, construction started on the Panama Canal, and the Ford Motor company started production.

She lived through wars, saw a man walk on the moon, remembered a time when mobile phones seemed like science fiction, and grew up when few Irish people had been inside a car or even seen one. She was already 18 when the State was founded.

    She lived through interesting times.

What's the point in being the oldest person in the country if you only become famous after death?

Awh rip Mary Byrne. What an amazing age!!
But I did laugh at your idea of RTE turning up on the doorstep of the new 'title holder' to film the reaction to the news!!! :-D

My mother told me how she was fascinated by microwaves when they first came out. I suppose they seemed like science fiction too at the time :)

Mary couldn't match the all time Irish record of Katherine Plunkett who died in 1932 at the age of 111.

They used Roman numerals back then. Sadly, Katherine was a cot death.

The oldest woman in Ireland has died, long live Ireland's oldest women.

By 2050 these will be a dime a dozen. Centurians are expected to be about 10% of the population.

Yeah but if obesity is anything to go by most people will actually be dying younger whilst the healthy ones become the exception and live longer.

Life expectancy is still rising. You are right that a good percentage of illness and death is caused by lifestyle future generations could fix that with:

    a) lower insurance costs for fit people.
    b) very high taxes on sugar, and sweet stuff.

I don't know why a comment like that is necessary.

And FYI women in Ireland were conservative up until the 1990s.
