Ireland's oldest woman has passed away

RTE are reporting the death of Mary Byrne 108 of Co. Laois. Ireland's oldest person.

This is a sad occasion for her friends and family.

However, I remain a glass half full type of person and immediately I thought of the new title holder (unnamed) who is celebrating on the double tonight.

RTE should have turned up at the new holder's house with the "good news" (obviously not for Mary) and filmed the reaction. Obviously taking care not to knock too loudly on the front door for obvious reasons.

I remember reading that the death rate of elderly people and terminally ill patients spiked after the turn of the millennium in 2000.

These folk were holding on to life to see in the new millennium and then let go. Fascinating and a little sad all at once.

Imagine, the year she was born was the same year as the Russian/Japanese war started, construction started on the Panama Canal, and the Ford Motor company started production.

She lived through wars, saw a man walk on the moon, remembered a time when mobile phones seemed like science fiction, and grew up when few Irish people had been inside a car or even seen one. She was already 18 when the State was founded.

She lived through interesting times.

My mother told me how she was fascinated by microwaves when they first came out. I suppose they seemed like science fiction too at the time

Mary couldn't match the all time Irish record of Katherine Plunkett who died in 1932 at the age of 111.

I know a guy who is 92. Every time I look at him the first thing I think of is, "you lived through World War II."
