Two really funny comedians, and both Aussie's, are Tim Minchin (?) and Adam hills. I was watching Adam hills on c4 last night and although some of it was a bit forced, other bits were incredibly funny

Tim Minchin - unfortunately - is not funny at all. In my opinion of course.

Great shows, it has aged really well.

Monty Python on the other hand, has not aged well.

Are you talking about the show or the movies? Because the show I can agree on, the movies on the other hand are pure genius. Holy Grail, Life of Brian and Meaning of Life were all superb.

I'm on my own here, but I love lee nelson. I think he's absolutely brilliant. Always makes me laugh whenever he's on. Only comedian where I know I'm guaranteed a laugh. I'd absolutely love to see him live

I also love jack whitehall, stand up and on panel shows. He's great for taking the piss out of himself. I always get a laugh out of him too. I loved his comment after cycling around a velodrome ...'I took to cycling like a duck to.....cycling'

Watched frankie boyle's dvd, laughed a good few times, not great though.

Milton Jones is brilliant live.. deadpan one liners went down very well!

Tommy tiernan started off funny a few years ago but now he just roars out obvious cliches and jokes against travelers and religious in foul language there's one in every pub in Ireland , I think the mark of a really good comedian is someone that can really make people piss themselves without being rude about it ,but that takes intelligence

Agreed, he's painful to watch now, and i was obsessed with him six or eight years ago.

Even his yearly pilgrimage to The Late Late is getting old.

He goes on, says something inappropriate or curses like a drunk and there's uproar on Joe Duffy Monday morning. Definitely time to retire.

Andrew Maxwell. the guy is just not funny at all. Hes a arrogant tosser whos whole routine is pathetic whingey digs and gurning faces. I just want to punch him square in the gob every time I see him.

Russell Howard. His show is painfull. bad puns a 6 year old could write, over and over and over again.

+1 - he's just vulgar and extremely unfunny. Went to see him at one of those Murphys little big nights out in Cork during the summer and it was so painful to watch and listen to him that I actually walked out - it was a free gig but still a humongous waste of my time.

That twat from the mighty Boosh, aways hanging round with the lads from Kasabian.
    Phil Jupitus
    Johnathan Ross

Jimmy Carr. I have never found him funny and I can't fathom why people do.

For mainstream comedians I'd have to say Tommy Tiernan. I watched his first DVD release which got me interested, and after attending two of his shows, for me was a very poor comedian. Relies to heavily on the cheap laughs from his shouting and swearing. The last show I went to was the one that caused a little contro with the down syndrome segment. So I'm in the theatre expecting a down syndrome joke, instead he took 1/3rd of his show getting cheap moral claps and cheers from the crowd for his defence, then told the joke, which attempted to gain a laugh from his down syndrome impression.

I wasn't offended, I've a pretty open net for comedy, but I thought both of his shows were poorly crafted and cheap.

Andrew Maxwell I put up there too. After what looked to be a decent prospect from the panel show, I saw him during a comedy festival over a weekend containing a large array of talent. He was the headline of a nice which also contained PJ Gallagher ( had a poor show, bad material and again relied on cheap laughs), and came out onto the stage rat arsed drunk. He mumbled through some material, got some cheap laughs from swearing and shouting, and had nothing clever or well crafted. Was pretty poor, and I've avoided watching him again.

There is plenty of top Irish comedians, up and coming, unknown knocking about. Probably some of the best value you get these days is dropping into a comedy club, its normally cheap as chips and you don't even need a gargle to have a good time. I got a free set of tickets to the Laughter Lounge recently and saw a tremendous young comedian from Cork, can't remember his name. Told some smashing jokes in a really well crafted manner. Unfortunately you could see a rake of people not really getting it.

Comedy is something I really love to watch and I am with Comedy like some people are with movies and music. But there seems to be a really REALLY obvious trend with Irish audiences that they respond better to a comic shouting or swearing, or having a pop at the government for cheap moral cheers, rather then appreciating well written material or pieces.

The fear being that the majority of comedians to come through will be shouting swearers, **** me that will be dross : /

Oh definitely the show, in fact looking back at some shows, it is quite weak in places.

I think alot of people write him off as a one liner comic. But he actually creates material that you morally know you shouldn't laugh at, and probably subconsciously shouldn't, but you find yourself laughing.

It's regarded as one of the hardest things to do in comedy, he can make you laugh at just about any sort of dark subject, as well as light. His shows are one of the highlights of the year for comedy for me tbh, he typically gently reels the audience in at the start with some light material, but around the middle he hits you with about 15 minutes of serious dark subject matter, but typically has the audience pissing their pants gasping for air.

How he deals with hecklers is worth the price of admission alone, I didn't realise until a few years ago, but he writes heckle put downs for a large portion of comedians worldwide, and is regarded as one of the best
    in the business.

But I can appreciate how he definitely doesn't wash with some people. My Da loves him for example, but my uncle can't stand him. He is a real hit or miss with viewers. Remains to be seen if his move into telly will be positive or negative, going by his last few shows he's as strong as ever.

-- probably the worst and most excruciatingly pathetic excuse for comedy I've ever sat through.

I still don't know how Stewart Lee has developed such a large following of fanboys

Russell Howard is pretty cringey. I watched a bit of that news show he does a few weeks ago and it was awful.

I like Jack Whitehall but I can see how he could annoy people too. I find him funny though.

Tommy Tiernan is awful. Time to just go away now. Des Bishop is crap. I like John Bishop though.

This is probably very unpopular but I love Graham Norton.

Comedy does depend on each individual sense of humour. I like Jimmy Carr for the very reason The Doc mentioned, he makes you laugh at things you really shouldn't laugh at.

Comedy is totally subjective, but who I cannot stand is Dara O Briain.

I must say I don't really find many Irish comedians funny with a few exceptions such as Dylan Moran.

But as previous poster pointed out, comedy is subjective.

    Des Bishop is simply horrendous.

"Hey you know whats funny? Im American and I grew up in Ireland! Here are some typical observations Ive pointed out in every one of my shows. Oh and I can also speak Irish and most of you cant! Im so funny and original."

    Shut. the fúck. up. Twat.

American comedies are aimed at the most ignorant and moronic of people. Cheap laughs with little thought needed.

eg - two and a half men.

    Arrested Development? Curb?
