It was a real effort to try to make conversation with her at the dinner table. She ordered liberally and the total bill came to around 20 pounds. I paid it as it is customary that a man pays for first date.

If she wasnt then yeah OP methinks shes just a golddigger type just looking for someone with money to look after her, whoever it was, sounds like anyway!

I wouldnt say the OP was cheap at all really, he paid for dinner on the date and was looking for somewhere to get drinks which sounds like he wouldnt have a problem buying at least some of hers too, sounds pretty nice tbh.
Maybe its just me but yes I love being treated nice on a date, as im sure most girls do, but it doesnt and shouldnt matter how much the guy pays or how expensive the place is etc, its the fact that hes gentlemanly enough to pay - whether its a coffee, Mcdonalds or a fancy dinner, its the thought

I think there's possibly a cultural misunderstanding going on here.

In many parts of Africa, you're expected to pay women for sex, even though they're not prostitutes. A lot of African blokes find it strange that western women don't ask for money before sex (when dating)

I suppose this type of thing can come about when poverty exists and sex is viewed as a commodity.

I don't know if this happens in China or not, but given their greedy attitude to money, it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

Totally different from Ireland of course. There is no safety net here really.

However it is not just Chinese to be "greedy with money."
It is human nature in general to be greedy with money.

Of course it is, but from business dealings, I must say I find the Chinese to be particularly greedy with money. As in, not thinking of the long term business relationship, but trying to get an extra few euro out of you on a deal.

You must have a nice supply of expats over there anyhow, no need to be a meal ticket

This was a chinese girl in china who speaks good english. Believe it or not, these are not particularly common. Her expectations from a date with an expat, who are often on very good salaries and allowances, would not be a cheap meal and a search afterwards for more cheap booze.
