Well first off there is much better value on betfair/betdaq than on Paddy Power, that would be my first indication that he was not a professional.

Paddy power like all the other main bookies treat big losing customers like rock stars, they are called category A customers so their phone calls are immediately answered to make sure they don't miss their bet.

PaddyPower will mouth on about precautions they have in place, like self exclusion and daily deposit limits, but a compulsive gambler will always get around this, I'd be surprised if this guy did not have multiple accounts and multiple credit cards which should have raised some questions.

This guy is still a thief, but Paddypower(all bookies) would go out of business with out thief's, husbands stealing of their wife, children going without school books and uniforms since money has been gambled away.

He's guilty but bookies are given to much free rein in Ireland.
i assume he used paddies as he was dialling bets or else oldschool.worth noting this was while back

i guess by your post you have never gambled big or know much about the industry.its everything to do with paddy power.if a guy walks into a chemist every day and buys cough bottle after cough bottle is it not the chemists job to ask why.the man betting pattern suggested he had a gambling problem

I worked in the industry for 14 years. I know a lot more about it than the majority of people. Not once in this guy's story has it said he frequented shops, it was all done online. Having worked as a manager in a major bookmaker in Ireland I had to deal with customers who wished to self exclude themselves from shops. They come into the shop with a family member or friend & provide a photograph & contact details, as well as the reason why they wish to self exclude themselves. I personally dealt with up to maybe 50 people who basically banned themselves from our shops (along with all the other big betting chains) in my time working in the industry. Our policy was that if a self excluded customer was served in our shop then that member of staff would face disciplinary action.

Now, O'Reilly didn't do any of this so its his own fault. From reading his story it seems that he either thought he wouldn't be caught (he doctored up a receipt covering €300k that was missing - then continued to gamble) or he thought he could gamble his way out of it. He was brought to the Derby & the Europa League final for gods sake so this guy thought he was a high roller & thought he'd live the life of a flash harry by agreeing to go as a guest of Paddy Power.

Also, just to let you know, when I worked in the shops I was told not to question a customer. I could not turn away a customer unless there were special circumstances i.e. the customer was barred by management, the customer was too late to place a bet etc. etc. If I told a customer I thought I had a gambling problem then I would be sacked on the spot. However that isn't exactly relevent as this guy was operating purely online.

6 counts of stealing, he must have taken over 290k each time, i don't know how this was over looked or why no one dealing with the cash was suspended after the first time?

No the six counts would likely be sample charges.

Was it really a 'first offence', given he was at it for 14 months?

Of course pp is responsible in some shape or form.surely the frequency, bet size and the events are hints.pro punters normally stick to one or two variances

He's a victim alright but he's also a criminal. If this was a banker or politician we'd all be going "About time! Proper justice at last" etc. If he was a banker/politician and got off there would be any amount of threads along the lines of "Ah FFS, ANOTHER one gets away with it. Stealing 1.75 million tax payers money. No justice"

Every gambler is different, Powers had no way of knowing what this guys story was. As someone said earlier, if they closed or restricted his account then he'd have gone elsewhere. The only person at fault here is O'Reilly. He is a thief & has been caught, end of story.

Had to laugh at the 40K bet on the game involving the Norwegian ladies soccer team, doubt the Johnny Giles(s) or James Lawtons of this world would know the ins and outs/form of this team.Sadly part of his addiction I suppose.Little sympathy for the guy, facts of the case speak for themselves.I am sure he had a great time at the Aviva stadium and the Curragh races.
