Re the WiiU, I'm annoyed at the expense tbh.
We have had to replace her car after she had an accident two weeks ago, hitting black ice in her lovely 05 Mazda 2 Sport, 1.6. It was written off but she was fine, just a bit shaken.
As a result we tried to replace it but they are like hens teeth, none to be found any where, so instead she wants a Suzuki Ignis, 1.5, 4wd, a nice car to be sure.
So that is eating into our funds right now, the WiiU could've waited til next summer without missing much, I mean look at the Vita, still no vital reason to own one some year and a half later.
Anywho, Wii U is incoming despite my calls for restraint, I may still be able to get her to return it, I'd rather a PC Engine GT!

Was at a Unity workshop today. Was really interesting. It's a very powerful game creation tool and a lot of fun to just mess around with. The best thing about it is there's no compiling, you can jump into your 3D game as you make it.

One of the weirdest things was the kids that were at it that know more programming than I did. They go to summer camps called 'Coder Dojo' and they're all making games and coding in stuff like Python already, might be worth looking into for people with kids that might be interested in it.

Great, at least we have an idea where the next generation of Farmville developers is coming from, or is that a bit harsh?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,314 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yeah very harsh, the kids were really interested in Unity and about how they can make money from it since it's easy to compile your games into different formats. The guy teaching the workshop who works in an indie game studio says the coder dojo kids scare him because they know more coding than he does.

If you have a good artists you can pretty much make a FPS game with Unity to match any current next gen FPS. It's very impressive, easy to use and will take 3D models, animations and textures in a huge variety of formats and you can code it in javascript, C# or python, the coding looks rather easy as well.

Now the course I'm doing is pure casual so I've to come up with casual game ideas which isn't all that fun.

Surely all the modern fps dev needs is a cookie cutter call of honour: modern battlefield game, with recharging health, a two gun limit and infinite lives. Clear signposting, racial stereotypes, QTEs and a bot game featuring zombies/mummies/sodomites essential.
If on the PS3 the almost exclusive use of the colour brown is a necessity!

I've been meaning to check out that NES Punk. I saw him appearing on AVGN's NES World Championships episode and told myself I'd check more Punk stuff. I've never gotten around to it though.

He has a weird sense of humour, an acquired taste if you will even. But once you watch a few of his videos you'll get what he's about. Here's one to get the ball rolling for you

Pat's Flea Market Madness bits are always a good watch. He strikes a pretty good balances between a collector's guide and ripping the mick out of resellers.

Agreed I really enjoy those vids. The segments at the end are a good watch too where he tots everything up & you see what you can get at those markets. Puts the Irish ones to shame sometimes

I walked into a big second hand game store in Boscombe in the UK over the weekend and they even had games from every generation. That one store put everything over here to shame - and it was just some random shop on a high street!

The internet is filled with that type of stuff, best not to ever read comments like it :D

Yeah I'd say that it is fake but the idea that it could be real is pretty funny :)

Yeah... I think that was his point? Am I missing something here?

Once you leave the cities, Dublin in my case, I find the charity shops and boot sales get a bit more rewarding. Granted, it's still slim pickings, but it's a welcome reprieve from the pre-2006 EA addled shelves of the Big Smokes.

I spotted some consistent bargains in Mullingar that odd time I passed through. Though I imagine Ireland's due to go a bit like England, where traders and resellers from the bigger cities go on scouting trips to smaller places in the hopes of finding cheap gems to flip.

Edit: Just read that there's been $2,000,000 worth of Wii-U consoles pilfered in the States. I mean, I think.
The article that breaks the news is woefully researched.

Anyone read that update on their 3DS saying that 18+ content will be restricted till after 11pm to comply with German law?

Apparantly the same thing happens with the WiiU too (you can get around it by setting up parental controls on the device)

I'm sick to death of German law playing a part in European gaming experiences. Nintendo - pick a different country to reside in!

Nintendo have a very weird relationship with Germany. They are based there so have to comply with their laws and while the rest of Europe embraced the Megadrive a bit more than the SNES, Germany was dominated by the SNES.

Does anyone remember the cluster**** of the N64 launch in europe, it's strange that it never gets investigated or reported on since it would make a very interesting piece but because game journalism is mostly US based the records show the N64 launch was very smooth and professional.

What I remember was multiple delays, people claiming they had a N64 3-4 weeks before launch and people rubbishing them and calling them liars. Then it transpired people were going on holidays to Germany and coming home with N64's and it's how these people got their hands on them, Nintendo had snuck the system out in Germany early to reward their loyalty. A lot of people who had waited through the delays with pre-orders got annoyed. Then Nintendo dicked them over about a month later with a massive price cut to the system of about £100.

Makes one thankful for MS when they cut the price of the Xbox soon after launch and gave everyone free stuff to say sorry, I know Ninty did something similar with the 3ds but that was years later. With the Xbox I think I got a controller and a game or two.

She has yet to buy the WiiU,
Still time to step in and get her to see sense! Madness, I'm also likely to wind up with the 8gb version and no games!

I'm still annoyed I missed out on that zelda game that was free for a while. I'd pay for it now but it's just simply not available anymore :(
