Givers and Takers/The Petrol Pump Test

I always take less petrol than I pay for. For example today I clocked up €19:99 on the petrol pump and didn't expect any change, (and indeed none was offered to me as they know my style).

Now I know that there plenty of you out there that clock up say, €25.03 and only ever offer €25 as you know they can get away without payment being made in full.

So, are you a 'Giver" or a "Taker?".

(And before you ask, this also applies to diesel engine drivers).

I have my own pump, what does that make me?

I worked in a petrol station as a young plank and you'd be surprised all that small change ads up over the course of a day.

You could easily be down a few euro on your till at the end of a day.

You see, is it any wonder the country is in the state that it is in. Did your pay packet suffer as a result?

    I actually can't remember it's a long time ago and I've a terrible memory.

But I wouldn't be surprised if some skinflint garage owners deducted it.

Always pay with my MBMA gold card so never an issue whatever the decimal figure be.

I normally pay by card so pay the correct amount.

Here's an idea, how about just putting in the exact amount, its not that hard.

I always fill it up, then pay by credit card. Saves numerous trips.

One day I was filling up at a quiet station. Was trying to get it bang on but messed up and it was €20.03....do'h!

Went in to pay and the guy was like "ha ha, hard luck, don't worry about the extra".....so I gave him a tenner and fucked off :pac:

I don't remember ever taking less than I'm supposed to.. those pumps are designed to rip people off so fcuk 'em. Every year the meters get faster.

I never pay for the extra bit but then I let them keep the change on other days for other items.

If you were shopping in <insert supermarket name> and it was €20.05 would you look to get away with only paying 20?
    I think not.
So stop trying to steal petrol.

Forget about the spare cents - they're making money on us anyway! What REALLY irritates me about garages is simply the PRATTS who park between two petrol pumps and are not filling up with petrol.....! And they're usually the longest in the shop!

I turn it into a game and try get the exact amount I intend to buy, I find it more challenging to hit €20.01 than to hit €20 exactly, so that's the target.

I also stretch out the piece of hose after and get every last drop, just like a human.

Yes. The country is bolloxed because people don't pay the extra penny for their petrol.

I wouldn't go out of my way to do it but if I could get away with it every time, you bet your arse I would.

I worked in a filling station part-time for 3 to 4 years. Maybe about half the punters went over, most of them by a cent or 2, some by a fair shot more. Most of the other half were on the money apart from a few who bought in terms of litres, some brimmed the car or those who drove off without paying at all.

I can only remember one punter who always without fail put in €19.99 and he was the only one who went under. Quite frankly he came across as a right wierd little chap...

After driving away from the petrol station, having pinched a couple of cents on a 20 - 50 bill and seeing that the place down the road is 5 - 7 cents cheaper a liter sure wipes the smirk off your face.

I always land on the exact amount, not under or over. If I don't I'm paying by card.

I was rather hoping this thread would develop into a heated class debate on value, price and profit. I have failed, miserably.

Am I the only one that buys by volume as opposed to value? I put 25lt exact into the tank each week whatever the cost of that maybe. This week it was 38:87.

Allows you to monitor much better what you car uses and puts real value on the amount you put in rather than just hopping €40 a week in.

Makes sense, but working out the mpg of my car would only depress so I just fill it up whenever the petrol light comes on and pay with a card.

I usually get it bang on the €20.00 mark at the petrol pump.

Depends on which hand I'm holding my cigarette in.
