Givers and Takers/The Petrol Pump Test

I always take less petrol than I pay for. For example today I clocked up €19:99 on the petrol pump and didn't expect any change, (and indeed none was offered to me as they know my style).

Now I know that there plenty of you out there that clock up say, €25.03 and only ever offer €25 as you know they can get away without payment being made in full.

So, are you a 'Giver" or a "Taker?".

(And before you ask, this also applies to diesel engine drivers).

I have my own pump, what does that make me?

I worked in a petrol station as a young plank and you'd be surprised all that small change ads up over the course of a day.

You could easily be down a few euro on your till at the end of a day.

You see, is it any wonder the country is in the state that it is in. Did your pay packet suffer as a result?

    I actually can't remember it's a long time ago and I've a terrible memory.

But I wouldn't be surprised if some skinflint garage owners deducted it.

Always pay with my MBMA gold card so never an issue whatever the decimal figure be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 885 ✭✭✭Dingle_berry

I normally pay by card so pay the correct amount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

Here's an idea, how about just putting in the exact amount, its not that hard.

I always fill it up, then pay by credit card. Saves numerous trips.

One day I was filling up at a quiet station. Was trying to get it bang on but messed up and it was €20.03....do'h!

Went in to pay and the guy was like "ha ha, hard luck, don't worry about the extra".....so I gave him a tenner and fucked off :pac:

I don't remember ever taking less than I'm supposed to.. those pumps are designed to rip people off so fcuk 'em. Every year the meters get faster.

I never pay for the extra bit but then I let them keep the change on other days for other items.

If you were shopping in <insert supermarket name> and it was €20.05 would you look to get away with only paying 20?
    I think not.
So stop trying to steal petrol.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 142 ✭✭Eden3

Forget about the spare cents - they're making money on us anyway! What REALLY irritates me about garages is simply the PRATTS who park between two petrol pumps and are not filling up with petrol.....! And they're usually the longest in the shop!

I turn it into a game and try get the exact amount I intend to buy, I find it more challenging to hit €20.01 than to hit €20 exactly, so that's the target.

I also stretch out the piece of hose after and get every last drop, just like a human.

Yes. The country is bolloxed because people don't pay the extra penny for their petrol.

I worked in a filling station part-time for 3 to 4 years. Maybe about half the punters went over, most of them by a cent or 2, some by a fair shot more. Most of the other half were on the money apart from a few who bought in terms of litres, some brimmed the car or those who drove off without paying at all.

I can only remember one punter who always without fail put in €19.99 and he was the only one who went under. Quite frankly he came across as a right wierd little chap...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭southcentralts

After driving away from the petrol station, having pinched a couple of cents on a 20 - 50 bill and seeing that the place down the road is 5 - 7 cents cheaper a liter sure wipes the smirk off your face.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,199 ✭✭✭Shryke

I always land on the exact amount, not under or over. If I don't I'm paying by card.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 333 ✭✭Its Behind You!

I was rather hoping this thread would develop into a heated class debate on value, price and profit. I have failed, miserably.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

Am I the only one that buys by volume as opposed to value? I put 25lt exact into the tank each week whatever the cost of that maybe. This week it was 38:87.

Allows you to monitor much better what you car uses and puts real value on the amount you put in rather than just hopping €40 a week in.

Makes sense, but working out the mpg of my car would only depress so I just fill it up whenever the petrol light comes on and pay with a card.

I usually get it bang on the €20.00 mark at the petrol pump.

Depends on which hand I'm holding my cigarette in.

If most garages, like other countries had pumps where you could input the amount you want before you put it in,maybe it wouldn't be such a problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,657 ✭✭✭somefeen

They can **** off if they want there 0.01.
Garage I use regularly no matter how slow you go the pump skips 0.02 every 0.01.
So you fill up and it goes
    19.89
    19.92
    19.93
    19.95
    19.97
    19.98
    19.99
    20.01

They do it on purpose the ***** to try and get the extra penny, cos the ***** will ask for it.
    Shameful behaviour.

yet another sad reflection of the "ah shure it's grand" only a couple of cents type attitude that pervades Irish society. Pay for what you buy, you wouldn't try leave you grocery bill or ESB a couple of cents short ever time would you?

No.. that would be ever so slightly immoral... and together with the illegal downloading of musical sounds could lead to civilisation collapsing in on itself like a massively inflated fuel bubble.

The difference is, the price of groceries is predictable. You don't go up to the till and get a cent more of what you wanted.
If petrol stations are losing money on 1 cent unpaid than they should get pumps that let you select how much you want first. Either in litres or euro.

Whenever I fill up the petrol and go like a few cent over I make my girlfriend give me the change and hand it over cause at the end of the day it all ads up its just like those 1c and 2c jars you gotta have at home to save money up

I like leaving the pump in for a good 30 seconds or more after I stopped, because its still dripping away. You'd be surprised how much still flows out after you've stopped pressing the handle. Every. Little. Bit. Counts.

    Petrol costs too much :(

Yes, blokes instinctively shake the pump two or three times to make sure the pipe is clear. Ladies chuck it back on the holster whenever the primary fill is complete.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

I'm neither... I pay whatever the pump says.

I can't help but suspect you're not regularly buying a lot of fresh vegetables. Many of those still get weighed at the till, so no knowing how much you'll end up paying ;)

I hide my selected vegetables underneath the shop display cabinet for a couple of weeks before retrieving them and presenting them at the check-out for payment.

That way they have decayed a bit, the water content is less, therefore costing less.

    Every little helps.

Why are you lying? I've gone from 19.99 to 20.00 dozens of times - it's all about skill level & control. Just don't be so rough when pumping.
It was dead easy when petrol was cheaper. But now that it's more expensive, because of the way the calculation and rounding works on some clicks it goes up by one cent, on the next it might go up by 2c.

For example, let's say that the minimum amount of fuel the pump can release on each click is 10ml. At €1/litre, then each click costs 1c. Dead easy to get it bang on.

With petrol at €1.50/litre, each click costs 1.5c. So when you stop at €19.99, you don't know if the counter is actually at €19.99 or at €19.995. If it's the former, then the next click is going to be €20. If it's the latter, then the next click is going to be €20.01, and there's nothing you can do about it.

I always pay what's on the pump, regardless. I pay my 1c when it goes over and I wait for my 1c when it goes under. Though I usually just fill until the tank is full, I'm not that pushed about getting exact figures unless I'm only buying petrol and nothing else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

I usally fill to the nearest litre, and not the Euro, and pay by card. So not an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,799 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

I try to get it to an even number but if it goes over by a cent or two I'll pay the even amount.
The shop don't ask for the extra cent or two and i'd be pissed off if they did.

We have an agreement, they don't go penny pinching for 1/9000th of a fill up of petrol, and I won't raise a scene every time they charge me €1.65 for a loaf of bread that is advertised as €1.29
