Delighted! Too right! You think because she "disguised" her use of the phone, the copper should of turned a blind eye?! I really hate people using their phone while driving. There's never an excuse for it. I'd love to be a Garda. I'd hand out fines and points for mobile phone use like there was no tomorrow.

OT, I'd like to hear the undisclosed "specific" reasoning for executing the warrant at 0330, though I imagine it would be for everything to go off without a hitch. I get that 0330, with men out of the ho.. caravan, it may of been a safer time. But still. 0330.

    This.

I actually had something along the lines of, "I get it was a halting site which could be an intimidating place" in my OP, but guess what?

Deleted it, in fear of coming across as an anti-traveller.

0330 in the morning for an unpaid fine (for using a phone) is ott in my opinion.
Doesn't matter of it was to get a traveller/parish priest/mass murderer.

When the Gard's stop following basic guidelines and protocols, it could lead the country down a slippery slope.

    That, is my point.

    hostile not necessarily dangerous
The guards would know more about the specific site in question than you or I would. If they deem it dangerous and feel back-up is necessary for safety, fair enough.

and the way people justify 6 gardaí going in to arrest someone for a minor offense by saying it was travelers

Given where the gardai had to go to make the arrest, I would say that the number of Gardai was warranted.

I say that not because they were travellers in a halting site, but because of what has happened in the past in and around Limerick involving people from that location, not to mention incidents directly involving the family in question.

So nothing to do with the fact they are travellers, and everything to do with the past track records of individuals living in that area.

Being a traveller does not mean a person is a danger or some kind of scumbag, and the fact that it was a halting site should not matter a damn, but track records do matter, regardless of what tag be it traveller, settled etc one wishes to band about when it suits. In my eyes the gardai erred on the side of caution when arriving to arrest an individual, who had avoided interacting with the law with regards to her offence for two years, based on a very long list of criminal activities that have been commited by residents of where they gardai had to go.

If the same gardai had to go into a settled area with a similar track record to issue a similar warrant, then they would have arrived in similar numbers as well. I am very confident of saying that because it has happened in settled areas in Limerick in the past and at odd hours of the day and night.

At the end of the day the woman has spent the bones of two years failing to turn up for court hearings and pretty much ignoring the law. It came back to bite her on the arse and now she is running to the media with what looks like some ham fisted attempt to play the discrimination card.

Ah get off your high horse will ya! A quick text while stopped in a long line of traffic is fairly harmless and doesn't really warrant the kind of response (yours) to be honest.

    hostile not necessarily dangerous
Hostile by definition has the potential to become dangerous.

All it takes is one scumbag to have a go at the Gardai and it can all kick off. Same would be true of many places in this country. Go in force, go when it's quiet and you'll have the least hassle.

If this had been a thread about how a Garda was injured while trying to execute a warrant on his own in a halting site at 6pm, people would be asking why 6 of them didn't turn up and why he went in the middle of the day.

    You can't win.

It is against the law in fairness. Punishable by the penalty imposed . Just cause it was your ma doesnt make it a miscarriage of justice.

Im not having a go or anything... I am only comparing the magnitude of the two cases.

6 Gardai sent in to arrest woman over €250 unpaid fine vs 11 Gardai sent to investigate the Anglo scandal which will cost the state €65,000,000,000

And you tell me I have an axe to grind?

11 gardai were seconded to the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement. That does not mean that there are only 11 people working on the cases.

She needs to learn how the system works..ie get some family and friends to get their leaving cert and into the Gardai, then all those problems will be deleted and no danger of 3am raids. In fact she can do whatever she likes worry free then.

    Good riddance in my opinion.

What the f*ck do you mean by "good riddance" ? Off the road with you? You could be spending up to five minutes waiting at the lights at newlands cross. A quick text stopped at traffic isn't affecting fellow drivers.

This is actually only one of 2 topics that I will saddle up on that high horse of mine, and ride it into the sunset. I don't give a flying fart if it's harmless. The law is the law, sonny boy!

As do I. I would never use the phone driving. She was stationary in a line of traffic.

Some of the nit picking people do is laughable.

Maybe it was a women only caravan site?

Is it a somewhat strange coincidence that nearly all documentaries concerning travellers only show footage of female members of families. The men strangely appear to make themselves scare or are not willing to have their faces on national TV.....

My driving instructor told me the most crashes are starting off from stationary . You should be sat checking your mirrors for cyclists cruising into your blindspots or pedestrians and stuff .

I'd imagine the 2.30 am time is related to that too. It seems the women were awake, but there were no men in the house.

Usually its the animals that be in the house.

This thread is pretty amusing. It's hard to pick out the people suffering from terminal naievity from those feigning outrage and shock.

It's against the law, regardless of what degree of severity. It had the potential to affect other drivers.

Presumably she'll be hesitant about doing it again, which is a good thing.

She is a traveler living in a halting site, would you go on your lonesome?

    Thought not.

I delivered food to a halting site on my own last week sometime, and it was after dark, so whats your point?

6 gob****es calling to a womans home at 3 in the morning, how fúcking big of them

    hostile not necessarily dangerous

You seem to be implying that ordinary people doing their jobs should risk the difference. Which, frankly, is idiotic in the extreme.

Try it in squad car with a luminous jacket and see if they're so delighted to see you.

based on it being a halting site is not grounds to assume there is a risk

use other factors to make that distinction by all means

Anyhoo, do you really need my point explained to you? Are you really unable to comprehend my meaning? Like, for cereal?

There must be more to this story than we're hearing. But, of course, given the Irish Independents now-love of tabloid-esque stories, we're likely not going to hear them.

It's perfectly understandable that they would want to send six Gardaí in to arrest her, given her location and, unfortunately, who she is. While not all Travelers are scumbags, a large portion of them are.
