No problems D15 to East point....was goin to put the winter tyres on the car over the weekend but didn't get time. Glad I didn't as I'd probably be posting in the wimp list this morning

A few wobbles from Leopardstown to Dun Laoghaire but in the places they usual are so not so bad.

Rathfarnham to city centre was fine. Just had to stay off the cycle lanes. Bus lanes were grand except for the edges on both sides.

    Some coming in from Ballinteer

Saw some brave soul commuting on a red Planet-X TT bike along the Dublin north quay towards the IFSC this morning.

The only way to describe my commute this morning was 'clenched'. Didn't hit the deck but one of my colleagues commented what a 'mad b****d' I was :-)

Howth Road/Fairview/North Strand seemed fine, although one side of the junction of Collins Avenue and Howth Road was blocked by two cars that appeared to have performed an impromptu Torville and Dean.

Didn't seem that bad to me. Was definitely worse last week. Though the exit to my estate is downhill onto a roundabout and this morning I had to stop for traffic, which I didn't have to before. My rear wheel stopping moving but the bike didn't, so I had to gingerly feather the front to try and stop without hitting the deck.

I'd love someone to gingerly feather my front.

Plan on heading out for 3 or 4 hours at 1-ish, will the roads be ok? Thinking about Maynooth, Clonee, Springfeild from Rathgar.

Took a tumble on corner of Liberty Hall on Friday night... Looked like an oil slick.

7am Ongar road from Clonee was quite frosty. Studded tyres, I am invincible!

Is it big difference on the studded? What are they?

Was all ready to roll out the MTB with the studded tyres, but decided it wasn't necessary. Cue Pompetamine with gatorskins and no problems. I'll save the MTB for snow.

They are a good bit heavier. Mine are 40c, quite big. They are noisy. I cycle to work on the frosty cycle lanes (only on the road when I am in lycra for some reason)...
The main difference is that I came off last week on the frost with my fixies and I stayed upright on the CX with the studded tires. I would not have spent that much money on them if they weren't going to make a difference.

Spiked tyres are great. My pair of Marathon Winter 26" tyres are now back on the bike for their third winter and they've already proved very useful. Make sure you get a pair with carbide studs, not steel studs which apparently wear out very fast.

As for the sound they make, imagine a bowl of Rice Krispies when you've poured the milk in, they sound like that (not unlike the sound of your teeth subsequently falling out due to eating ridiculously sugary breakfast cereals, but I digress...). It's the sound at the end of this silly, yet strangely relevant, advert:

...on a personal note, if I ever see those three annoying little characters/feckers while on my bike I plan to run them over.

I'm too cheap to buy some for my MTB until the Snowpocalypse actually hits.

That way I can sit at home and eat pies and pretend it's the internet/fedex/wiggles fault that I can't get out.

Ah but then you'll miss out on the fun of going up tree rock in the snow! You can bring pies with you and have a pie-nic on top.

I came off my racer this morning on black ice and sprained my wrist, time to put it in the shed for a couple months and pull out the MTB :D

I'm running scared on my hybrid with the ice and frost these days. Would getting an mtb with spiky tyres be worth it to keep commuting? My big fear is having experienced slips while even going in a straight line that I could easily fall in front of a car or bus.

Meath roads quite sparkly & glassy. Car today, I think.

If you're rims are wide enough, and your brakes will clear them, you can pick up spiked tyres for your hybrid. Something like these. Thinking of getting a pair myself.
