I can't make it either, would love to have went. You need to put a time and venue out there *now* though if you want this to take off.

This is such a good idea. I was worried that if I ever wanted to meet other gay people I'd have to run off the george alone some night or something

Also, anyone is welcome of course

    Good

I would personally be very strongly against the idea of this forum regularly organising meet ups exclusively for young gay/bi males only.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    It's exclusionary.

To who? - the straight people browsing through an LGBT forum?

Older (in comparison to you kids) people.

I would say that if you all want to make friends in the LGBT community, you should be as open minded as possible re age, interests, gender etc.

If you go into this things with a strict idea of the type of people you want to meet (romantic or platonic), it can be harder to meet people and you find yourself getting too hung up on the wrong things.

I understand your point but how is it relevant here?

This will be a meeting of gay male students - all within the same age bracket. I wouldn't see the point in inviting 40 year old lesbians?

BTW I would class myself as VERY open-minded.

I'm pretty lost by these posts, seems like mindless commentary from the 'wise elders'?

This forum is open to everyone regardless of age, gender identity, sexual orientation.

It is not a forum that excludes people. There has been implicit suggestions that lbt women and people more than 20ish were unwelcome.

But that was cleared up and as you said everyone is welcome.

I'm not trying to stop this. I welcome and encourage self organised meet ups.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? It's not meant to be age discriminatory at all, it's just it's aimed at students and ALL LGBT events are structured on age or other characteristics, this is nothing new and is a common feature and fact. For example BelongTo is 12-18 and the older group is 18-24 and OUTHOUSE has some for over 25-35s and other various different groups specifically catered for. Groups seem to be designed around classification and it's not meant to be exclusionary or discriminatory

    Exactly.

This situation is like when my dear mother asks can she come clubbing with me? I'm not being discriminatory, I just couldn't see her being able to socialise with a bunch of 20ish year old's!

Sorry I'm getting confused here. Is it open to everyone or just to gay male students? What if gay female student wants to join?

Just looking for clarification not trying to be antagonistic. I think it's a good idea and you certainly have a lot of traction on it.

Elders? Watch it kid. I could (probably) sneak into the age profile if I wanted.

It's no odds to me either way. Was just giving some friendly advice. Most of you seem to be only starting out on the gay scene and not having many other gay friends.

I'm Just saying the more open minded you are the better. Not for this meet up, but more generally.

A lot of people who have responsed to this thread have posted before about not being able to meet other gay people etc etc and at times it seems some people were constraining themselves with some narrow views on the types of people they wanted to meet.

The way I see it is this like flogg said; it's a group for (I'm assuming) guys, that are not on the scene, who are of student age, 18-26 looking to meet gay people cause they don't know any. Seriously! people should not be getting offended by this

In fairness the guys are in college or working, young, finding it difficult to meet with other like minded guys and some people start going on about being inclusive etc.

There is nothing wrong with them restricting it to who they want. Other boards meet ups have not gone well because people wonder will I be the only one like me going?

Go and have a fun night, young men and don't worry about everyone for the first meet up. What we've gone through over the last few years has / is been a personal challenge.

We have all seen the amount of posts on here about young single guys finding it difficult to meet others. Maybe a full boards lgbt boards meet up in the new year??

    +1.

I'm of the same age as you guys but I'm a bisexual female. Don't see anything wrong with ye having your own meetup for gay/bi male students. It's not exclusionary. Older age groups are free to organise a meet up of their own, as are bi/gay women etc. And of course a general forum meetup for everyone is fine too. I don't really see the problem

I wasn't including myself in the list of "older" people potentially excluded.

I was just clarifying what mango was referring to by exclusion.

Hence I wasn't thrilled about being referred to as a wise elder. Maybe that wasn't evident from the posts.I'll live though, don't worry!

I don't mind what at all about this, and hope it goes well for you all. Was just trying to give some advice. As I said, I've seen a couple of the posters in this with similar threads here before where I gave similar advice.

but in the context of what you are trying o do, you might be right to do it like this.

    Hope you all enjoy it.

Have sent email to 'Messers', any other suggestions?

If not we will scout around and beach ourselves at a table somewhere before 6pm Friday and post accordingly! :D
