Finally... Student Meet-up

    So I was thinking...

There seems to be a fair few gay 19-23 year old guys, posting about where to meet like-minded people?, as they are not stereo-typically gay and are finding it hard! People who can't see themselves jumping in the deep end and going to the George, and even if they did, who would you go with!?

So... to begin, I'm Paul, 22 and a very masculine homo - love my cars, pints with the lads and to top it all off, I study engineering FFS! (Although I do appreciate fashion!) So for me not being recognised as your typical gay, I find it hard to meet other similar guys, as I know is the case for many others on this!

So two months or so ago, through a PM, I met Shane- a fellow boards member for a casual pint, after reading his thread which I could fully relate to! This was a great step for me as before this I had never even spoke to another gay guy never mind go for a drink and most importantly - a good aul chat! I would like to think we have formed a good friendship so far *wipes away tears* and would be great to do the same with others, as I know it has helped both of us a lot alot!!

So pretty much, if your a student (or there abouts) and want to meet some similar kind of guys for a chat over a coffee or a beer, then POST! Would be a great way to get out there and meet others!

General opinions appreciated, this could be a complete FAIL!

I think this is a good idea :) Posts from people in their twenties that are similar to the one the OP linked occur quite frequently.

Writing my own thread in August, and the responses to it, were very helpful in my decision to finally tell a friend my biggest secret.

I'm not a big muscular jock whose ideal date would be with a mirror, but I'm not the very camp type that you might describe as typical either.

I have been to gay clubs a few times, but not on my own. I liked the experience (you can guess why!) but it's all so typical and sleazy. First guy I kissed wanted to go to the toilets for some 'privacy', that pisses me off to no end! It just seems like no place to make a friend in a similar situation, or meet someone you could have a relationship with. The people there are very out too!

I went to Front Lounge last time I was out. It's just like a normal pub, nice place. Even if the scene wasn't your thing, I think it's nice to be in a place where it's just the norm to see gay couples kissing. Fills you with optimism!

    [/rant!] But, yeah, that's a good idea :)
    I'm 20, student in Dublin.

I think it's a good idea! Like he said I met Paul through boards few months back and it's great to have mates who who in many ways are in a similar position with regards coming out etc. We think it would be kinda cool to organize a meet up of some sort among the several 20 somethings on this forum. If anyone is interested PM either of us and we'll see what happens.

I think this is a great idea. I'm 21 and from Mullingar . I am not out to anyone except to a close friend and my parents surprisingly enough. I'm a masculine guy, genuine guy just looking for nice, genuine friends.

Would really appreciate a meet up with the group. Count me in :)

Thanks again for creating this post, it was much needed :)

Great stuff lads. Sounds like a good idea. I can relate to being in that position myself. Even though I have a bf I'd still like to come along as the amount of gay friends I have are 3 but that's about it.

But if you don't want a taken 24 yr old let me know!!

Would love a chance to join in (even though this is the first time I've posted here :P)... I'm 19 and a student too!

Completely agree about not being ready to 'jump into the deep end', although I am out to most of my family and friends :)

A night during the week would suit me best too!

Oh, and nice to meet everyone :D

This is the position I am in also, 'flahhhh hout' with college until the 15th with Thesis and all that jazz!

Just to let everyone know, this was intended to be a way of organising a meet-up of like minded people, similar interests *cough* and I would have thought similar age so we can all relate. (Both out and not out)
The fact that many people are in the same boat when it comes to meeting people, this is a great opportunity i feel, for a friendly chat rather than some kind of sleazy hook up session.

I'm sure this has come across fine to everyone but just making sure!

Also, anyone is welcome of course more the merrier and all that, but... I would keep in mind about the age group.

So... seen everyone is in on this, lets get suggestions, I am no organiser by any means :p
Maybe then once a day can be decided(ish) we can get an aul list on the go! errrrr'body loves a list! :D

POLL IS UP - Get voting! :D

Looking at numbers, we might even have to reserve a table somewhere!

(Poll is open until Friday 7th, plenty of time I reckon, with use of results we'll choose a day for next week, or week after at the latest!)

Well you kind of guesses indeed, arts lol.....joking :D.
My course runs just like the full-time, we do exams with the full-timers at the same time and get assignments at the same time also. It's just a night-time course rather than day-time.
Studying Business and Management, 3 days a week, 6 modules per semester. Tough one, cause you in at 6pm and finish at 10pm meh, but I like it :P

    Folks,

Has anyone "nominated" to organize this? Otherwise this thread and the interest generated from it will peter out?

Not that much would be involved. I suppose we'd need to agree on the date (which I assume SOMEONE can the result of) - maybe we can arrange the 1st "meetup". But even if some people can't make one date, we can arrange for another. I for one wouldn't mind going more than one meetup, meet a few new people at each, etc.

Perhaps some provisos wouldn't go astray either for the sake of those who aren't out? What do people think?

    Suggestions welcome too, I'm no know-it-all! :D

Itchin' to get this rolling! :D Like many by the sounds of things...

So plan is, poll ends tomorrow, from that the most popular day will be chosen, stick that day onto next week and Bob's your friends mother! :D

    I got this!

25 people have taken part in the poll! Even if we were to get a turnout of half this, it would be amazing!

After the day is announced tomorrow (oh, the suspense!) I suppose we'll get a list of names on the go!

As for now, suggestions on a venue?!

    A cautious word of warning.

Voting on a poll often does not equals to turning up to an event

I've seen polls here where 20 people might vote on a poll and 3 people turn up

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    Physically or mentally! :p

As said already, ofc the more the merrier. I'm not gonna attempt to say who should come and who shouldn't, its open to anyone, but I do feel that the age group should be considered. What I mean by this is that, for me the idea was about meeting people of the same age to share experiences and generally socialise as such opportunities never seem to arise for students.

I'm not sure how enjoyable it would be for a 'mature' person to come along?

I can imagine! TBH I wasn't expecting this amount of interest, so even if only 4 were to turn up, it would count as a result! :D

As for now, suggestions on a venue?!

It might depend on the night, because some places have karaoke or other special events on different evenings.

How about The Front Lounge as a potential option? I can't personally recommend, but I've heard good things! Or maybe we don't want to go down the road of establishments like The Front Lounge that are well-known for being gay-friendly...? Like, maybe it would be better to chose a 'normal' spot so that nobody would feel embarrassed or intimidated and what not walking in...??

Sorry, that probably doesn't make sense. Just wanted to get the ball rolling :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭mr.anonymous

    Wednesday
As for the venue, I agree it depends on the night.

I was in the Front Lounge recently and it seems just like a 'normal' pub, but I'm not sure everyone would be willing to walk in there. Of course there's the George, Dragon and Pantibar, but also the same problem.

There's Messrs and QBar on the quays. I'd say we'd want one close enough to the city centre to suit everyone?

(Embarrassing that as a student I can only name two pubs in Dublin :( )

Makes perfect sense! I'd have no prob going to front lounge or similar but I think your right in what you say! Sure we're not limited to the one spot so it can be an option. ;)

I'm thinking somewhere quiet but not too quiet, large tables etc.
The Bull and Castle on the top of Dame St. is a very nice place, seating there accommodates for large groups too if we end up with a good number of go'ers! :D

Hoping for next week. We'll see what day is most popular when the poll id up! for some reason I can't see the results?

I assume many are busy with college related stuff so might be hard to find a day to suit everyone, but like someone said earlier if it goes to plan this could become a regular occurrence. If everyone can't make the first outing we should be able to organise something again after xmas :D

I think we should stay away from the gay bars :/ seeing as many mightn't be out and all that. Folk might not be too comfortable walking in the door of those strange places..:P "normal" pubs will do just grand? Unless we're guna parade around with banners and pride flags?...might just leave that for meet up number two ;)
Perhaps some provisos wouldn't go astray either for the sake of those who aren't out? What do people think?

Important point that, this is just a friendly get together of "like minded" people :P out or not out, doesn't matter....no one should feel they might be outed by showing up!!

Any suggestions of places feel free to shout!
This is a team effort! ;)
