Always thought that they were a poor man's Specials

The Specials started the 2Tone Ska revival of the late seventies which Madness were a part of.
However, i,d never call Madness "a poor man,s Specials...
The Specials were (and still are) a band not afraid to be very political through the lyrics in their music.
Madness on the other hand were always the happy go lucky band and over the last three decades have matured into one of the best bands of their generation.

Love(d) both bands. As for political stuff Madness had their moments notably "Blue Skinned Beast" about Thatcher and the Falklands war.
Also "Mrs Hutchinson" about the National Health Service in Uk, "Waiting for the Ghost Train" about apartheid in South Africa.

Haven't heard much of the new album but "Liberty of Norton Folgate" is great stuff.

yea, they had their moments alright, ahh... "Mrs Hutchinson", now there,s a tune!! they played it in Dublin last time. As for the new album, i think it will be every bit as good as the Liberty is.. roll on the O2 Dublin next month :D:D

Anyone see The Staves on Friday?

Caught them alright, their harmonies were amazing. Highlight of an otherwise poor show I thought

I didn't see the show, but saw the 2 Soundgarden songs on YouTube.

They look great, sound great and are great.

    Ellie Goulding headliner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 613 ✭✭✭rodge68

Jesus, Ellie Goulding's voice would go through you and the 2 songs were pure pop muck. Always thought she was crap (though she does do a good cover of the Midlake song Roscoe)
P.S. Dont find her pretty at all either....

looking forward to seeing Bill Fay tonight. His new album is quite a thing of beauty. Apparently this is his first ever TV performance. Crazy since he made his recording & performing debut in 1970.

He's great. His new album is up there with anything that I've heard this year. First song to last no filler and includes a heartbreaking version of Wilco's Jesus etc. In fact here it is...

    +1

I wouldn't say I've ever been a fan of her music as such, but I thought her performance on the show was savage. Understated, but raw and powerful.

When was the Whipping Boy vid from, must be around 2000/2001 ? Heartworm is brilliant from start to finish.

I just discovered Lana Del Ray on Jools, always heard her songs in the background but I think this performance is fantastic

Figured it might be appropriate to resurrect this thread considering a new season on Jools has begun.

    Last night featured:
    - Alt J: Left Hand Free was underwhelming but Every Other Freckle was quite impressive.
    - Ryan Adams: Haven't delved too much into any of Ryan's material but the song and performance make me curious.
    - FKA Twigs: Stunning both visually and musically, definitely gonna give LP1 a couple of spins after watching her rendition of 'Two Weeks'
    - Jungle: Probably the best performance of the night in my opinion, you can tell that they were really enjoying themselves also.
    - The O' Jays: Not really my bag but I certainly wasn't offended by their stylings.
    - Vance Joy: Foppish, twee piddle really.

The extended show runs on Fridays methinks?

Good summary, I'd agree with most of it tho, probably a small bit more positive on Alt J though.

Thought Jungle were as boring as normal, no idea how they are so popular.

Loved the O'Jays despite thinking that time would have caught up to them. There are no bands like them any more. It's a dying genre. Esp if you listen to their stuff when they had absolutely amazing voices.

RA - good performance as usual but need to listen to the album a bit more.
    FKA - Loved her.
Vance Joy - switched off. Turd of the highest order.

Tonight at 11:50 (or 11.05 Friday).

American R'n'B and soul singer Mary J Blige performs tracks from forthcoming album The London Sessions, and veteran singer-songwriter Marianne Faithfull plays songs from her new LP Give My Love to London. Also appearing are Southampton rock trio Band of Skulls, Irish indie musician Hozier and Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit, while Luther star Idris Elba chats to Jools about his album paying tribute to Nelson Mandela.

    Looking forward to hearing Hozier.

The Stylistics are playing Vicar St in November, another Philadelphia Soul group from the same era as the O'Jays.
