Of course she was right to do it.

If kids were led to believe something and the bubble burst of course they will be hurt. If they were never spoon fed the santa crap in the first place and simply told that family and people who love them give them presents for the new year would that not fulfil the same function and very importantly not be a complete lie.

I also disagree with the religious aspect of "christmas". I think the state should abandon the christamas festival and instead just introduce a "winter festival" with higlight being the winter solstice which is when the new year really starts from a cosmological perspective.

I believe the only thing that will fix this is a night of three visitors....the first one will come after midnight to show you your christmas pasts....:P

Ah Sean, seriously? Did you ever believe in Santa? Do you still hold it against your parents that they with held the truth until you were 10/11?

I don't think it is useful or valuable to tell kids about Santa anyway. But that's another thing to discuss and it should be left to the autonomy of parents.

Hmmm, I don't know. I once wrote a letter to Santa and got a Sega Megadrive. I prayed for ****ing years and got nothing. I know which I'd rather believe.

I think every kid should believe in Santa, learning that Santa is not real is a part of growing up, and the disappointment and how to handle it is something they need to learn.

But not at 5 years old!! What a beeyatch!! If she did that to my kid I would be hopping mad!! Parents go to a lot of effort to make Xmas special for their kids and to take that away from them is wrong!

What an evil old trout- what gives her the right to ruin one of the most innocent and fun parts of childhood? She must have a crappy pathetic life if she felt the need to do that to a bunch of innocent kids.

Santa brings hope and joy and greed - all the good qualities. I assume the teacher will refuse to take her Christmas holidays. Perhaps not. That would be taking a principled stance too far.

    Mother of god...
There is nothing wrong with a bit of magic for kids at christmas... they aren't damaged by it and there is nothing better than the excitment of kids in the days leading up to the 25th, it truly is a wonderfult time for children..
In time they'll learn the truth but the memories remain of all those magic christmas mornings..

I really would find it very hard not to punch that teacher in the face, repeatadly, for a very long time.

I'd argue that its yourself that is "damaged" in some way. I'l have to say that when I realised there was no santa I was overwhelemed with gratitude towards my parents for the 10 years of magic that they went out of their way to create for me and my sisters... If you end up hurt by the experience then there may well be deeper issues that need resolving.

Sounds a bit over the top though.

If anything she should have just said that she didn't believe in Santa.

I don't think it is useful or valuable to tell kids about Santa anyway. But that's another thing to discuss and it should be left to the autonomy of parents.

Or she could have just shut the **** up.

And gotten another job if she hates kids that much.

Also, I pity your kids. What's Christmas for a 5 year old without Santa and presents.

At least there's tangible proof the presents exist.

So you'd have your kids not believe in Santa and in turn they'd tell other kids and wreck their Christmas?

I believe that Christmas isn't about Santa, Frosty the Snowman or any of these other trappings, but about a real living man Jesus who came to save the world from the penalty of sin (Matthew 1:21).

So my view of Christmas is based on Jesus. When I was younger it was based on mere material things rather than the truth. Sharing gifts in honour of the greatest gift to mankind is a good thing but the right understanding is important.

I don't have kids but I hope to. I never said no presents, but certainly no Santa.

I don't think Santa is what Christmas is about. There's no need to be so abusive about people not wanting to tell their kids about Santa.

    It's actually quite intolerant.

Yup, tell em "God" is the fake one and Santa is real. Because Santa is actually much better than "God"... god doesn't give kids presents, he just has them raped.

I thought you were all for people believing in imaginary figures?

No just real ones which we have plenty of evidence for like Jesus :)

What a horrendously ignorant comment. It is AH I guess so why should I be surprised.

Why can't it be about both? In difference capacities?

    Talk about unreasonable.

He's not living, and he wasn't the son of god.

Basing it on Jesus is not a truth.

I have no doubt Jesus was real and had good intentions, He tells a good story too. He reminds me of Derren Brown.

I think that is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who has children, little siblings, nieces, nephews etc knows that having Santa still coming to the house really makes Christmas and when they get past believing in Santa the day is just not the same any more. It is a rite of passage that should happen somewhere around 10/11 - why would you spoil it for a FIVE year old, who's only just understanding the Santa concept a year or two and could have another five years of magical Christmases? That woman is an absolute scrooge. For gods sake they are five year old children, what odds is it to you if they hold on to a fantasy for a short while???

Christmas for me as a Christian is about Jesus. Santa has no place in it. First and foremost if I do have children I will bring them up with Christmas centred on Him.

I think the whole Frosty the Snowman, Rudolf the red nosed Reindeer, Santa aspect detracts from the truth about Christmas namely that it is about the birth of God's Son who came to rescue sinners like me. Great news, far better than the other narrative :)

You can do what you like. I never said you must do differently. This is about how I will live in the event of having kids.

I don't think telling people to believe in Santa is a good thing as a Christian.
