Tipping: Do you do it?

Apologies if this had been done a million times already, but do you tip? Is it necessary? The people are getting paid as it is to perform a service and why should they get tipped? I tip restaurant staff as a rule when I have received excellent service, but am somewhat disgruntled to think that the tip is pooled and shared, so even the grumpy and rude servers are getting some even the very well paid cooks behind the scenes.
I was at the barbers today and haned over €8, the price of a haircut and was taken aback when the guy looked the at the money and looked at me a few times as if to say "where's my tip". Restaurants are the only occasion where I will tip, and maybe hotel porters, taxi drivers or tour bus drivers.

Do you tip as a rule? 150 votes

Yes, all the time regardless of sercvice.
If the service is good I will tip.

People that don't tip in restaurants just look stingy IMO.

Should i tip the postman every day for delivering my post? tip the one behind the till for scanning my shopping? tip the one in bookies for processing my bets? Why are people in restaurants expected to tip?

I am in favour of reverse tipping, i.e. taking money from them if the service is sh!t.

Don't tip then. Feel smug and self satisfied with the quid you've saved.

Meanwhile less bitter people will not really worry about the earning so of waiters and waitresses and go on about their lives, happy to encourage good service with tipping

I used to, and I used to tip well too.. But tbh I don't have that disposable income anymore.

So it's just waiters and waitresses then?

Love all the smug "why should I tip if they already get paid", same people holding out their hands for their Christmas bonus,, free night out etc even know the already get paid, how hard is it to understand waitress etc rely on tips just like people rely on bonuses etc stop being mean.

It's pretty hard, unless you care to explain how a waitress on minimum wage is worse off than a shop assistant on minimum wage?

Yes, all the time regardless of sercvice.
I always tip in restaurants when the service is good. I have (on very few occasions), told the waiter to take the 10/12% service charge off the bill if the service/quality of food was ****e. A lot of waiters expect to be tipped no matter what, f off.

It's common in America to tip were the wages are considered low . I will sometimes tip a waiter/waitress myself ( provided the meal/service was good ) rather than the manager /owner skimming most , if not all of it off as part of the service .

I tip when I'm in the states.

Why would anyone tip in Ireland? Are people just that stupid that they tip because they see it on American tv without taking into account that the reasons for tipping in the states do not apply here?

    Sean

I'd tip if there was exceptional service.

I expect a good service and I'd prefer the business owner to pay their staff rather than have them rely on the customer's discretion.

Yes, all the time regardless of sercvice.
I used to tip well, not so much anymore.
Generally will always tip in a restaurant, especially if the waiter/waitress is evidently very busy as it's a stressful job and customers can be seriously rude sometimes. Don't tend to tip taxi drivers or pizza delivery guy coz I just can't afford to anymore.

I'll be sure to tip 20% when I'm in America, but in Ireland I won't be losing any sleep over it and consider it entirely optional.

A lot of you is saying you only tip if the service is good
If you are gettin served food the service should be excellent in the first place

Yes, all the time regardless of sercvice.
I'd tip in restaurant where I was served if service was good
Don't really understand though in some shops where they have tip jars and all they are doing are sitting behind a till...
