Well folks I've been quiet for a while and here's why. Though this isn't finsihed it took it's first road trip today - not bad for an 80 year old frame! Anyone looking for a steel frame a little younger (2 x Reynolds 531 and 1 x Double Butted Vitus) can contact me. I'll be going a little slower for the foreseeable future! http://www.flickr.com/photos/66347375@N02/8236419412/in/photostream/

    Hello folks!
My boggo standard Halford's finest; Carrera Virtuoso. Bought it very early this year and got loads of great spins on it in some nice spots around the country. I travel about for work so during the summer I can drop the wheels off, throw it in the boot of the car and go out in the evenings when I'm staying in hotels.
Done out for summer until the other night...

    image-10.jpg

And then done out for wet spins and in anticipation of some 2 and 3 day tours next year with mudguards and light luggage...
    image-11.jpg

It has served me well so far so I'll probably use it again next year and then think of trading up for 2014.

    I'm using a Garmin Edge 200 BTW.

Hi Brendan, that bike deserves a nice big picture. Looks stunning for it's age. I don't use Flickr so can't advise on how to upload to forums, maybe someone else that uses it can post some instructions. I'm a photobucket man.

    Hi Folks

Ok, it was easier to build the bike than upload the photos! Anyway this is a 1930's road frame (probably 531) with Chater Lea Lug and Headset. Interestingly it has a threadless BB shell which required a TDC sleeve. It has a 1950's Hercules chainset (48t), Atom pedals, Mafac Brakes and Milremo stem & bars, brooks professional saddle. Still need to fit front Bluemels mudguard. Wheels and brake levers are obviously not as old.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone with similar bike. In the meantime I also have Mercian, Raleigh & Motobecane Steel frames (Reynolds & Vitus) for sale. Best, Brendan

This is my favourite bit from that article: "The owner has gone through the journey of lightweight bike builds with carbon anywhere and everywhere, but has come full circle to feel and functionality."

Thanks again Lumen for the link...what a beautiful bike... and those brake calipers are just engineering masterpieces :D

When my Giant SCR 3.0 frame cracked, I bought a Dolan Preffisio frame and built it up with the canablised parts of the Giant. Put on a new Tiagra compact 50/34 crankset (converting it from a triple in the process) and completing the tiagra group set, although the RD probably needs replacement (or maybe just the cogs). Wheels are Mavic askium. Resprayed the seat post and stem which worked out well. Saddle is a bit shabby - the original giant one and will be replaced. Here's the result - my first ever total rebuild and delighted with the result. Will hopefully provide years of faithful commuting service, as my giant did.

Edit - should say thanks to holyboy & triggermortis for the headset help (it's different from the giant original) and clog for putting me onto the dolan frame - a steal.

Mine was finally ready for collection today. Absolutely delighted with the way it looks. The wheels are really smashing and I think actually really make the bike.

It's funny comparing it now to the Mrs's 48 (mine's a 56) the relative proportions of wheels to frame make for completely different looking machines. Personally I think most bikes look best in a 54. A 58 in a Cervelo starts to look a little gangly in the headtube to my eye.

Anyway. Here she is. Money down, bed made. This is my bike now for a good few years to come anyway here's hoping.

No, they're kysrium "I can't believe they're not carbon tubs" slr's. :). It's a great trick, the shiny braking surface has been treated so it's dark. They need matching brake pads as well, but other than that they're just great looking clinchers. The rear is lovely in real life as well. Carbon cylindrical spokes on one side and flat bladed on the other. They look the dogs now I must say, the pics don't do them justice at all.

Looks great, Bloke! Definitely nicer finishing kit on his compared to hers. Will you be able to resist the temptation and stay on the Ridley this weekend!?
