Off to Anfield today for this.

    Predicting a nervy pool win.

    2-1 Suarez with both.

That team Minus Shelvey plus Sahin would make me extatic.

However, its still a pretty good team. finally Gerrard could be out of a central role of responsibilty, and leave the workers i.e Allen and Lucas shut other teams down. I'd prefer to see Sahin then Shelvey as I think he would flourish with less defensive responsibilities, and his passing ability (which we havn't got to see much of) would be used to set up the front three in front of goal.

Still Shelvey is a great prospect, even if he does fustrate me with his inconsistancy. He doesn't seem to have a middle ground. He's either playing brilliantly, or poorly.

    No they weren't.

I still can't get my head around Rodger's idea of letting him go. OK, he thought he'd get a replacement in by the end of the window and the situation was horrifically misjudged. Still, even if another forward was brought in, there was still plenty of room for him in the squad. His performances were pretty good (even if his goal return wasn't) towards the end of end of last season and he made a decent impact for England at the Euros. He was just starting to find his feet at Liverpool and then he's booted out.

I feel a large reason as to why Rodgers wanted rid of Carroll was not primarily because of his ability but because of what he symbolised at the club. He was the £35m flop whom there were question marks about after every game and was constantly ridiculed by the media and rival fans.

Carroll stood for everything that was perceived to be wrong with the previous regime and Rodgers just wanted rid at all cost so he could truly start afresh. Fair enough if you have the firepower up front to cover the loss, but it was a pretty stupid decision to make when the forward options are looked at now.

He was let go because he didn't fit the system at all. It's been hard enough to get the players to buy into Rodgers system already without a donkey up front who they could punt the ball to at times of desperation. I think he wanted to completely eliminate that option.

With the results as they were there would be big pressure to start Carroll and then we'd look even worse. He'd have to completely change his system and style to suit him. It would be far to tedious to have do it. I mean I could understand the disappointment about him leaving if he could actually score goals in another system but he can't, he's useless. If we are desperate for a goal in the last 10 mintues there's about 10 other options in the current squad I'd use before Andy Carroll.

Exactly...in the current squad if we are desperate for a goal in the last few minutes Agger can play the role Carroll could.....with the added bonus of being able to use the ball at his feet.

Surprised to see Lucas - has only featured in one reserve match in 3 months - and that was on the back of coming back from an long term injury

I hope he isn't been rushed back too soon

It does show that Rodgers knows this is a big game for him

Will be interesting to see how we perform today - with all the calls for Gerrard to be pushed forward and with Rodgers able to play Allen in his preferred position

If Lucas has been the missing piece of the jigsaw then maybe we should be looking for another defensive midfielder as well as striker in january ( in case of a lucas injury)

Definitely feel 3 points in the bag with Suarez getting a couple

Will gerrard or shelvey play out wide?

Rodgers admits that any reinforcements in January – and the manager has ruled out a move for Aston Villa's Darren Bent – must arrive early in the window

Good news then! Doubly so in fact! :p

I dunno, if you look at what he hasn't said Sturridge could be a possibility.

i think long would be perfect for rodgers system. he can play either side of the front three or the main striking role. would offer electric pace also very unselfish player with an excellent work and team ethic. ive a feeling br will make a move for him in jan with sturridge a fall back if it fails.

Shane Long is not good enough to play for Liverpool. Signing him would be the player equivalent of hiring Rodgers as manager. And I love Long.

13 goals in 45 Premiership games. Turns 26 in January.

    Standards really slipping around here.

I'm assuming someone put Bents name to him but not that of Sturridge or indeed anyone else otherwise he could have had to read out a list of players he could say he wasn't looking at!

Nice dig, signing Long would be nothing like that. Rodgers was a young manager with high upside. Long is nothing of the sort.

I would not be starting Lucas today. We shouldn't need him to beat Southampton. If we are a couple of goals up with 20 mins to go then bring Lucas on. I would also rest Gerrard (he can't manage 3 games in a week), Sterling (needs a rest) & Allen (looks fcuked). If he don't play Sahin today its a joke & he may as well fcuk back to madrid
We have a tough game against Udinese on Thursday, so lets keep a few of the bigger names fresh for that

    My team would be :

    Reina
    -Johnson --- Skrtel --- Agger --- Enrique
    Sahin

    Henderson---Shelvey

    Suso
    Suarez
    Assiadi

    Chances of that happening 0%

Long would have been a good buy at the 6 million West Brom bought him for. But not at the 12 to 15 million they would want for him now.

The same people wanting Long were probably the ones wanting Kevin Doyle 2 years ago

Just as well Liverpool didn't keep him by the looks of it, mind you this doesn't help the club sell him of course.

    1 point, Sahin isn't a DM.

    No point playing him there.

He's not got the tackling ability, or the stamina to play as an effective DM.

He's looked at his best with Liverpool as the furthest forward of the middle 3.

that's a few injuries now this season already. hasn't really got going yet either. shame. was really hoping he got a good run of games so we could sell him to anyone stupid enough to want him
