No, they are struggling with it as Intel won't release the source code for the Atom chip it contains, it needs to be reverse engineered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

The Intel chips aren't in production anymore, nor are they being supported. A Boxee 2 has been rumoured for this autumn but, y'know...

so you can get rte and tv3 and 4od and bbc.
is it easy enough to get all the sky sports channels on one of these?
    what about itv?
    channel 4?
    setanta ?
    eurpsport?
    espn?

Nope. Unless they have web feeds or you can get them via a tuner then you're never going to get regular feeds via a set top box other than those can can descramble regular tv channels i.e. Sky & UPC boxes, etc.

Though aer.tv has a decent selection if you're signed up to Magnet.

got one of these boxees , only e154 on komplett. seems to suit my needs because of its playback capabilities, will do for now anyway until the atv3 gets jailbroken or they bring out a decent google box

    over and out

Boxee 2. hopefully will mean a (decent) update for the existing box

That is pure Meh, nothing appealing about that at all, no outstanding features or looks. I'd doubt they'll do anything for the first Boxee Box, Intel have dropped support for the cpu it contains so both the Boxee team and Dlink need to drop support for it too.

there are a load of new boxes coming out and boxee will surely be in there, even if the first box is being dropped, a new boxee box will mean that new apps etc will be made & should be able to be still playable on the old one? most of them anyway?

    http://www.itworld.com/personal-tech/309353/boxee-tv-hits-wal-mart-roku-gets-universal-search

Boxee 2 or whatever its called has gone on sale in America at $99. Has the features you would expect but also has the ability to show uncrypted channels from a sat dish. Im not sure if that means it will be able to show saorview channels or not but i will hazard a guess and say it will.

Not a bad price when you factor in that it can also stream from those htpc's ye all have hiding in ye're attic's.

At the moment (only in America) there's the option of paying $15 a month and this gives you unlimited recording capabilities. Your recorded tv shows are stored in your personal cloud that you will be able to access from anywhere in the world.

If it could do saorview and free to air satellite, then it would be the business

Recording to the cloud for 15 quid a month, wtf, who wants to save to the cloud? The whole idea of PVR is to save content locally for offline use. More crippled offerings from the Boxee team.

I'd honestly never advise anyone buy one (unless they open the box to allow XBMC like they originally said they would). My Mam is having lots of trouble with her Boxee, it keeps disconnecting from Windows shares, often within an hour or two. Rebooting the server fixes it but is a terribly annoying fix. It's a well known issue and the Boxee team have stopped supporting the original Boxee Box, last firmware was in March. Because Boxee is proprietary software they cannot use Samba 3.0 (GPL states it can only be used in open software), therefore Boxee use their own modded version of Samba 2.0 which is very bugged. XBMC is open software, it can use Samba 3.0 and has no problems with Windows shares.

Dont agree with the "crippled offerings from the Boxee team". Its offering most of the streaming features the previous boxee offered as well as the free over the air channels all from one box. And at 99 quid, seems pretty good to me. Though they're software support is total cack as you said. Im going to wait a few months and see how its sells in the States before I commit.

If it does freesat and saorview with the streaming content and netflix, its fairly neat package.

As for saving to a cloud, I would find handy to being able to save my content to a cloud. I work away from home 4 weeks out of every 6 and if I am able to access the cloud from my laptop its a winner for me.

That being said I wouldn't bother use the cloud myself if I was living at home full time. In that respect you are probably correct about the "crippled offerings from the Boxee team"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

Crippled, because saving to the cloud means you do not own or control the content like a normal pvr, you cannot share it again ie. give a recording to a friend etc. The Boxee team have always crippled things to suit the content providers, they originally promised an open hackable box, this changed later and the box was locked down. Just after first release of the original box, in the first firmware update, they changed the layout without notice to focus more on online content than local files, they removed the torrent app and tried to cripple the vpn functions. Along the way they have done whatever the content providers demanded, including the stupidity of removing the play/pause button in favour of a Netflix button in newer revisions of the remote, when Netflix UK doesn't even work on the box.

Lots of sites have it that the new Boxee Box drops support for lan playback completely. I rest my case your honour, you may now close the thread....

Is there any way to get the Boxee box to ignore the word "The" in movie titles. It's a bit annoying that of my numerous movies so many of them are listed under the letter T.

I use Ember Media Manager to create my own NFO file per movie, takes care of the problem.

Yep, same for the images. Start off by sorting all your media, then name everything correctly with filebot (don't bulk Tv shows, do a season at a time) http://filebot.sourceforge.net/

    How will this work?
Is it not the same as Megaupload (And other sites that shan't be mentioned)?
How long could this last? we build the library for them, like grooveshark etc.. then unlike them, and more like Boxee, they introduce some crazy prices, and use our uploaded libraries as a reason for their pricing to others, while i can no longer view them...

Can people get done for this?
If i share movies (The one thing we're being told not to do on the internet) over Cloudee and then get suddenly disconnected, so i have to pay for services, all of my movies are still up there, i can no longer view them, but i am technically the person sharing them... ??
Using their service, the same reason Megaupload/Ninjavideo etc etc etc.. were closed down.

    EDIT..

After thinking about it, it's well handy to share files to friends in Australia etc.. If they have unfinished tv series etc..

I'd still like to know the legality of it though..

I think its more like a crappy version of youtube rather than something intended for sharing TV shows. If you upload copyright stuff im sure it will get deleted and your account closed.

Yes, pretty sure I got the info a year or so ago from this thread (thanks to OP and link above).

It's a great app, much more flexibility than allowing Boxee to scrape the content.

So people can share their funny home movies with me.. yay.:(

Bit stupid for €15 per month.

I just went to look over that page again, and it's changed.
I presume i could share files privately?

I have installed this, the hack has added fanart to your films and tv programmes and it looks very well. They have also added a music icon on the home page and a different display for your local media. Using the interference seems a lot quicker as well.

Does this work on a PC with Boxee installed?

I amn't near one at the moment, and curious.
