Its been like that for a good while, the project has been abandoned. Look up 'Ember Revisted' if you want to install it.

The Ember Revisited link is here:

I was thinking about purchasing the boxee box, but the Hdmi out only is a bit of a sickener, I have a WDTV Live at the moment which I have the outgoing signal converted to analog via an old video recorder. I do this because I want to send the signal to another TV upstairs in the bedroom.

Any ideas how one could do the same with the Hdmi cable without losing quality ?

You do realise what you're asking

This is being sold as a box that plays 1080p HD content. They were right not to include a scart as it's a completely outdated technology, it wouldn't play HD content over scart.

Well I have a HD TV but I wanted to share the output to my upstairs TV also, I have a WDTV Live and it has all the connections, so why not this ?

I see this as a major flaw with the Dlink Boxee box, Looks like I'm gonna have to wait for the Iomega version which will have composite video out.

Only some of the older WD TV Live boxes had composite outputs.

D-Link made the decisions about their Box.
A design decision was made about the market they decided to target. HDMI has been around for years now, and Boxee Box customers are high tech early adopters, and early adopters tend to have newer TVs where HDMI is standard.
They were also aware that once you down-convert, it is going to look poor and use precious cpu power to down-convert. There may then be issues with Netflix, Vudu and other HD content over composite.

Iomega are targeting a different market with their product, hence the inclusion of internal storage and composite. I don't care for internal storage, nor do most who bought the Dlink Boxee.

This is exactly what the Boxee team want, different manufacturers offering different products.

Of course yes, I should have known that..............

I just feel stupid now. :(

Perhaps I may still purchase the boxee box and use my antique WDTV live upstairs.

I've had a Boxee about two weeks now and while there's a lot to like about it, theres a lot that pisses me off too.

Identifying files incorrectly, fine I can live with that, but then not being able to manually identify them correctly after specifying the correct tv show title (when the files are number EP1,EP2,EP3... its not rocket science)

The cycle period it takes for fixes to be released and new firmwares made available, 3 months?! Youtube isn't working at the moment for a lot of people and it wont be fixed for another while it looks like.

Its a good option but definitely not for the tech newbies, It was this or an Apple TV 2 and I'm wondering if I'd had gone with that and jailbroken it and thrown XBMC on it would I feel the same?

download a prog called media renamer, will sort out your names and eps for you so boxee can display them

very quick and easy to use program

Its not Boxee's fault your files are in random order. You need to use a file renamer on your files to get your files in order with the show name, season and episode. Then you can make your own nfo to identify the files if needed. Its the best feature of the new firmware.

When I download tv shows, I spend the time with filebot to get them right, I then use Ember media manager (link in blog below) to make the nfo and poster image and add it to the directory. I've every file identified the way i want with the image i want, not a single one wrong and no missing images (I Google to find images if ember doesn't automatically).

XBMC needs the same, media must be named correctly. The only advantage XBMC has is that it allows you change scraper, which you can do with Ember anyway

Is there any way to block certain shows on the boxee, I would like to block/password protect some shows like Fringe & CSI and let the kids watch shows like Chowder & the Simpsons. I know that I can block adult contect with a password, but is there a way to do what I want to do?

some people seem to be having a problem with youtube - I was having similar troubles until i changed the DCHP settings from whatever was originally there to instead use openDNS. a quick google search should get you on the right track...

Its main function is streaming, but it depends on where you want to stream from. There are apps for lots of sites

Can a Boxee box stream from www.LiveOnlineFooty.com ?
Is anyone here doing it ?

You could go to that link using the boxee browser and work from there, That's what I do with the RTE player.

If it plays in a browser without installing a helper plugin then it will work on the Boxee. Does this site install a plugin? The Boxee does flash and html5 so most stuff plays

The RTE Player works great on the boxee box with this link

    http://www.rte.ie/playerxl

    - Easier to navigate
    - Plays in full screen

? Is it worth starting a Boxee Box Tips Thread ?

Where iś the cheapest place get one of these bad boys??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,712 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

As per An.Duine.Eile above the RTE XL URL works a treat. Thanks.

@wandatowell - I think the price is fairly static around the GBP 179 on Amazon.co.uk, if you can source it from the US you will get it cheaper though.

Here's a tip, if you use the chrome browser on your pc, you can send videos and links to boxee with this addon:
