Question on Lumia 800 offline GPS navigation.

Found this statement dated June 2012 on one of Nokia forums “Nokia is now saying it is IMPOSSIBLE to add offline maps to Lumia 800 and 900 but it will be added to Lumia 820 and 920.”

Is this still the case i.e. SatNav on Lumia 800 needs online connection?

You got that wrong, first thats not about the GPS navigation, thats about Nokia maps. You can download offline maps for Nokia Drive GPS navigation but you can't download offline maps from Nokia Maps (similar to Google Maps)

Nokia Drive is the best GPS navigation app for windows phone

    Thanks for your reply.

My understanding (open to correction) from websites is that Nokia Drive can be used in offline mode but with limitations. For example, to re-calculate route Nokia Drive on Lumia 800 still needs online connection. Is this true ?

Also Nokia Drive accepts destination only as address (not tap on the map), is this correct?

    Thanks

No Nokia drive works in offline mode and doesn't need to be online to re-calculate a route or any new routes. The online mode is used for extra search results and downloading map data. For example searching for "Barrys Pub", if it can't find it on the map it will ask you if you want to search online to find it. If you select yes it will try to find it's location, once it finds it it will download its GPS location to your Nokia Drive app and thats all. It's handy for finding place's that you don't know the full address.

You can't tap on the map to add an address or location. I'm hoping they might update Nokia Maps to link directly to Nokia Drive so if you find a place on the map you can select to use Nokia Drive to navigate to it.

What you can do is just find the location on Nokia Maps, copy the location name and paste it in to Nokia Drives destination. If you can find it on Nokia maps, Nokia Drive will be able to find it too.

Cheaper to sell the phone and buy a new one on the right network.

Free for all Lumia owners in the Nokia Market place :)

Would you mind elaborating on how exactly you get it for free please?

When you say the "Nokia" Market Place, do you mean the Windows Market Place? It's showing up as 2.99 in the Windows Market Place. I checked the Nokia equivalent, i.e. Ovi, just in case I was missing something, but that doesnt even support the Lumia, so I (and others it seems) am at a loss as to how to get it free...

They are referring to the Nokia Collection of apps within the Windows Phone Marketplace (now called Store). This is only found on Nokia Lumia devices.

When you open the marketplace/store on your phone, you should get 3 options: Nokia collection, applications and games. The Nokia collection stuff is exclusive to Lumia phones and should contain all Nokia exclusive apps etc. The applications and games section are shared with all the other OEMs.

I just took a quick look and it is showing up as €2.99 there for me too. But I think if you click on it you can then just install it free, you don't need to purchase it.

Doe's this still work? It would be nice to have this as my first download for the nokia lumia 800! :)

I'm not sure tbh, I got it free, but I think it might have shown the price as €2.99 in the listing when I did. You can find out easy enough by going to it in the marketplace on your phone, it'll either give you a button to install (in which case it's free) or to purchase (in which case it's not).

Mirrors Edge was only free for about 24 hours for Nokia users, I grabbed the wifes lumia when she wasn't looking and installed it for free. Its back to €2.99 now so I'm not sure what will happen if she ever needs to reinstall it. Grand game.

Once you've installed it it's considered purchased, so you can reinstall it again free whenever (I've done this with other apps that were free for a limited time).

Anyone having an issue with the phone crashing when listening to music and on the internet? A soft reset sorts it out but it's annoying, especially as I keep forgetting that it will happen.

    Hi,

I have a problem whereby when my lumia 800 discharges fully, when i try to plug it into charger ( plug + cable ) to get it back, it wont work..it doesn't seem to take the charge and even trying the reset ( 2 button and 3 button ) - doesn't work.

The only way i can seem to get it working is by plugging it into PC, then it seems to take charge - it's only happened me 3 times where it's fully discharged and turned off and each of the times, i've needed to plug it into pc to get it back - anyone else got the same problem?

    cheers

I've gotten this 3 times as well, and it's generally when it's really convenient, twice have been the night before an early flight so had no phone when arriving in my destination! It happens very rarely and I'm afraid I have no solution. Strange problem though, being plugged into the wall and the charge dropping even faster!

Yep. I get this all the time when I'm on the train browsing the web and listening to music. Happened every day - so I had to stop doing one and only either listen to music or browse the web.

^^^ That all sounds like the original battery problem from when the phone was launched, i.e. it went totally dead, to such an extent that there wasn't enough in the hidden reserve (as such) to switch it back on, even when plugged in.

You guys running the newest firmware?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 424 ✭✭Landoflemon

Yeah, I updated the firmware a while back, but my phone has currently been sent away. Switched off in my pocket and haven't been able to switch it on again, even when plugged in.

What a PITA that is. This phone really has been plagued with power issues :(. I thought all the FW updates had sorted that out for people but it seems not.

New owner of a Lumia 610 - first smart phone so don't have anything to judge it against but fairly pleased with it so far.

One very annoying thing though (and sorry if this has been covered before but I will admit to having not read thru the entire thread :)) - it seems impossible to set a fortnightly calendar reminder

Have a couple of things (namely to put out the bins and change my contact lenses) that are fortnightly and generally things that I easily forget about.

    cheers cm

There's a very good app in the marketplace for bin scheduling. Forgot the name of it now, but you can set up a live tile to tell you when and what bin has to go together with a reminder.
