Whats the 800 like for gmail? I'm considering getting one sim free and using it on three but I'm a google fan.

I can move to skydrive instead of drive/docs but gmail is important to me. Would I need to use pop/imap instead of gmail in the browser? Is the calendar app good using google calendar through ms exchange?

Perhaps one of the phones redeeming features is the Email, and it world great for Gmail with perfect sync for the calendar and contacts etc. Just make sure you set it up as Google Mail in setting instead of Gmail. It never seems to work when you choose Gmail in the Email accounts settings...

I don't use exchange so I can't comment on that but raw Gmail is great!

defe, especially as the price was recently reduced to €170

Listen the Samsung S3 is the best phone at the top of the market, iphone is the safe choice however they are all 24 month contracts phones.

Their is another bunch of pay as you go phones however the Lumia is the bargain at 160 euro, once off payment no contract.

You will not regret the Lumia 800

I have an issue with my 800 where it seems not to recognise when the headphones are taken out. If someone phones the microphone and earpiece are disabled. The only way to make the call is to put it on speakerphone or put on the headphones.

Has anyone any experience of this?

Ok folks. Just after getting one of these phones with Meteor and I have it at home. The problem is that the Sim card will not fit into the holder compartment. Its too big and wide. I thought all sim cards we re the same size?

You need to get a micro sim their is actually 3 sims sizes out their now. The iPhone 5 added another nano sim to the mix

You can cut it to the correct size and it will work, there's plenty of videos on youtube showing you how. The only difference between a sim card and a micro sim card is that the normal sim card has more plastic on it. I did it when I first got my lumia and it worked fine :)

    Here's one

If you are doing a DIY cutting job of the Sim Card and you cut too much of the plastic of the top of the card so it doe snot fit exactly would the network provider replace it for free or would they charge you for a new sim? Has this happened to anyone else before. I tried to cut it myself earlier and it won't fit exactly in the holder. I have just moved from the Vodafone network to Meteor and they provided me with a new standard sized sim card. TBH they should have informed me in the shop that the phone would need a micro sim

2 free replacements a year, once you don't damage their property. If you happen to lost it or have it stolen they will help you out ;)

Get a micro sim cutter for a proper do or ask a phone shop nicely.

The price you have to pay for going to an actual retail store. You can pick up a replacement for free. Generally as far as I know Meteor doesn't have Micro Prepay Sim cards. So they either can't do a replacement till the number ports over, or they would need a proper sim card cutter to cut down the existing sim

I'm beginning to regret getting this phone last week. It was fine initially, but I haven't been able to send or receive texts for the last four days.

There is also an extremely annoying bug with the contacts list where after you add or delete a contact the contacts list doesn't update until I turn off and on the phone.

Al right this has been repeated several times. Ensure your have the very latest windows phone software. Do not assume a new phone is up to date.

    http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/support/product/lumia800/

If that is the case ensure you have the latest Network Setup app from the marketplace I think the latest is rev 2.6.0.1 this solves at lot of issues with sending picture messages in particular.

I am thinking of getting one of these phones for mainly general web surfing i.e using the wi-fi, playing mp3 files on the go replacing my ipod and also to replace a 7 year old mobile i have at present. Would this phone be receommend as a good mid range smart phone
The only pain with WP7 is that you have to use Zune to transfer music to your phone. If you can get over that, then picking up a Lumia 800 is a good deal.

Yep, doing the old drag and drop in Zune is a total pain . It's even worse if you have it set up to sync automatically as you then have to go through the total nightmare of plugging your phone into your computer and leaving it to sync by itself.

You could just set up WiFi sync. Once the phone is being charged it will sync your pics and playlists via WiFi. Still annoyed why they removed that from WP8 :(

Just FYI - my post was totally sarcastic. I just don't understand why people get annoyed at having to use Zune to sync stuff to (and from) the phone. I get that using an android is easier as you can drag and drop from windows explorer, but there is much more to it than copying - Zune (and iTunes) sync the content, not just copy it

How does one quickly silence this phone? I know you can tap a volume button then touch the top right corner, but yesterday I did this and then games still played music on it so it was only really silenced from a ringing point of view. I quite miss having profiles like the N8 and previous Nokias. Guess I just have to get used to it!

Rumour is we're getting 7.8 on Wednesday...

What if it's in your pocket?

Just pressing the volume up or down button once will silence an incoming call.

No quick way to silence a game though, you just have to hold the volume down button until it gets all the way down. Some have their own mute options.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭g0g

Ok thanks for that. Here's another one - how do you quickly close an app? The only thing I can figure is constantly pressing the back button til you get to home screen! I know if you press the start button you go back to homescreen, but if from there you press the back button you end up back in whatever app was open, thus suggesting to me that it was left running in the background. If I hold the back button then open programs appear up, but this seems to be for switching between them as opposed to closing them!

I just use the home button. Apps that are "running in the background" aren't really "running" in the same sense that they would be on a PC. Basically they are paused and their state is saved, when you hit the back button it's actually launching the app again and the reloading it's state.

So you don't have to worry about them slowing the phone or using up battery etc.

Ah yes, such a useful feature that it has been killed off by WP8 in favour of the phone just being recognized as mass storage like most other devices

In your opinion. Other people have different opinions. I think the 5 is much better than an S3 (in my opinion)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 951 ✭✭✭andrewdeerpark

Fair enough, I just thing the iPhone5 is to expensive for what is an evolutionary phone not a revolution. While with the S3 you can see the vast improvement from the S2.

Back on topic its questionable to buy either on a 24 month contract with a min tariff of 45euro a month spend? That's why the Lumia 800 is such excellent value, and if you are smart you can keep your topup (with Three anyway) to 20euro lasting 2 months and on the second month buy the 5euro data topup. So 25euro spend over 2 months and you are no being a miser with the phone usage.

A lot of people get sucked on by the FREE iPhone on a 60 a month 2 year contract?

    Heyo

So I'm considering buying this phone on prepay from Meteor, considering it's only €150 which seems like an insane deal for a phone that costs well over 400 with prepay on my current network, 3.

I'm just wondering, would it be much hassle to unlock the phone from Meteor pretty much straight after I get it & then get a microSim from 3 to use with it?

ALSO, I have a Macbook Pro, what's it like to use with Mac OS as opposed to a Windows PC?

Unlocking them is a hassle. Chinesse shops cant do it or charge you approx 60 euros which is the exact same as online.

You have a Mac Connector for Windows Phone. You make a playlist on iTunes. Connector sync it. You can sync photos and update your phone and etc.
