Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I've been over in Holland (or, more correctly, the Netherlands) - in Irish, Isiltir, and I've been away from Amsterdam and all its superficial temptations. This is a lovely country - more conservative than Amsterdam but the Dutch are very friendly although surprisingly few of them have ever been on our shores.

    Basically, my point is that it is possible to enjoy oneself in the land of windmills and dykes without getting stoned or having a quickie with a red light lady.

    That is all...

    I lived in holland in the early nineties.Fukking loved it.Never spent money on hookers but did smoke hash and loved going to 24 hr raves.

    Having lived there for over a year you do get to see more than what the op reckons most ppl see on a long weekend.

    spent a month in holland in 2008 and its a lovely country ..people were all very friendly and the countryside is really peaceful.

    plus the beer was cheap.. bought 24 bottles of beer in the shopsfor 5euro and when i took the empty bottles back i got almost 2euro in exchange....paying me to drink really :P

    would love to go back again.

    I went down to Rotterdam last time I went over just see the rest of the country. I spent my time marveling at their efficient public transport. I'm a big nerd though so I love massive public works like that.

    My sister, nephew and niece all live over here. There's more to Holland than Amsterdam but the culture over here is rather different. They are football mad here and can drink to beat the band.

    I lived in The Hague for 10 years. Never liked Amsterdam, too many tourists. The Dutch people are great . The only problem I found was that they were a little too open minded, certianly in the late 80's early 90's. I had a great time. I never really bothered with the hash, I stuck to the beer. It was dirt cheap which was the problem :). I'm gald I came back home. I work for the Dutch department of a major company over here with people from the Netherlands. So I still use the lingo and speak with the Netherlands every day.

    That Isiltir is a right goer - you're not the only lad she's been with, but it's bad form on your part bragging about it, and we all know she's Irish, she was known as the Rathgar Raleigh before she emigrated.

    It's a super country. Great people, great attitude. And I just love the look of it, I could wander around for hours over there just looking at the old parts of the cities. It's one place I could happily live.

    My Aunt lived in the Hague for 20 years until recently and is married to a dutch man so I have spent a lot of time over there on holidays. I love it.

    Amazing museums, galleries, quirky shops and great beach at Scheveningen. Also loved travelling around the country to gorgeous towns like Utrecht and Delft. Had a great day at the Efftling Theme Park which is based around the Grimm Fairytales and has some amazing rollercoasters.

    All in all been to the Netherlands numerous times and only went to Amsterdam 3 times to go to Anne Franks house, Amsterdam Arena and canal trips etc.

    All cheques from the Dutch tourism board should be made out to Witchie please......:D

    In Amsterdam I liked sitting by the canals in the sunshine. The red light district was a bit ****ty I thought. The cycle lanes are lethal though for the uninitiated. Lesson quickly learned :-)

    I lived there for nearly five years. It's very liveable but has got very little going for it aesthetically. I found the people excruciatingly dull and conservative in the main.

    I've been living here for the last couple of years, currently in Rotterdam but I was living near Leiden/Den Haag beforehand. Rotterdam has really grown on me, I must say. It all felt a bit cold and impersonal when I first moved here, but like with any big city you learn your favourite places and it begins to feel like home. One thing about Rotterdam in particular is that you often end up somewhere unexpected on a Saturday night - there are often once-off events in unusual places, so you could end up in a lighthouse rave, or a concert on the 40th floor of an apartment building. It beats the routine of pub/club/kebab imo :)

    On the other hand, if you don't fit into the bureaucratic system here you might find yourself highly frustrated - the amount of paperwork, letters, online citizen accounts and so on is unbelievable! I think it is supposed to make things easier and more convenient but it ends up nearly driving you mad!

    Eindhoven is surprising as well, all glass and concrete but still has a soul and a character.

    Amsterdam ? Depends where you go, loath ' de wallen ' but really like the old cultured parts around Prinsengracht.

    Infreastructure, heathcare, politicians, etc put Ireland and the UK to shame

    i love the place, im thinking of trying to do a masters there next year. Im currently trying to find somewhere to learn some dutch, i know most people in amsterdam speak english but i would like to have at least the basics.

    Healthcare wise I think the NHS is pretty good to be fair. Politicians definately do not put Irish/British ones to shame. Politicians are the same the world over and not in a good way.

    the only reason i could think of someone hating dutch transport is if they are a bit casual with their timekeeping which seems to be the norm in ireland and that annoys me. I found the dutch transport system perfect.

    Something that really bugs me is when people go to Amsterdam and just go there to get stoned and drink. Almost as much as drinking holidays. So you a hundred-odd euro on flights, more on accommodation and everything else, to do exactly what you could do here?

    You can't get stoned here legally, you are forced to support drug dealers who send money out of the country instead of supporting the Irish economy

    Jesus ... shes probably from Limburg ... they use cow drawn carts down those parts :pac::pac::pac:

    Public Transport in England is sh*t in Comparison ... I'd say the Dutch Public transport even rivals the Germans, only downside is that it can be pricey.

    Bit of both, I think. I call it land of the giants. I left Lowlands festival 2 nights early a couple of years in pure disgust because all I could see was people's shoulders.

    We just bought a house in Utrecht, we're moving in over December. I love it here.
