Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take a pic but I saw a very unusual car in a petrol station a few weeks ago. Couldn't think I the name of it until I saw a different one online today. Aston Martin Lagonda. :D Very peculiar looking car.

First Stop don't either and they are my usual tyre shop.

It seems to be the branded stores that don't fit supplied tyres. Better off with an indy shop. ;)

One thing I like about my car.

    I can start it.
    Take the key out.
    Leave it.
And lock it while it's sitting idle, warming up to get ready for the journey home.

Right lads, quick question here, take it easy though it could be a stupid question but myself and a friend are having this debate earlier.

You have two identical cars alongside each other travelling at exactly 80mph. One is a brand new Alfa with 120bhp, the other being a 8 year old exact same model of that car with the same engine i.e everything. The older car has lost power over the years and as such produces only 80bhp.

My friend reckons that they both would be sitting at 80mph at exactly the same ''revs'' i.e 4k revs per minute. I said this wasn't right as the more powerful car would do 80mph with less ''revs'' say 3.5k as it has more power than the older one.

Who is right here? It's a genuine question so if I'm wrong don't attack me!:o:D

You really, really, really, really need to get over your infatuation with Alfa's dude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,925 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

You've ignored the important part of the puzzle here, the gearbox.

The gearbox is the deciding factor in all this, not the engine. If they're really the same cars, and have the same gearbox, then AFAIK no matter what the power is the speed and revs will always have the same link/ratio. So your friend is right.

The effects on the car that's lost BHP will be an increase in time taken to reach 80mph, and it'll have a lower top speed.

*I could well be wrong. /awaiting either Marlow or Matt Simis' input

That directed at me? I just used them as examples, take two 740i's if you wish..:)

I did take that into account but surely the 80bhp car wouldn't be able to hold the same revs at 80mph than the 120 engine?

You can take any marque of car you wish, I used Alfa because..... well... yeah fine I like 'em ya hear! :D

Using any example, I'm puzzled by what is the right answer...

Wheel sizes will also affect the final gearing ratio, but yeah - for the same gearbox/wheels at the same RPM then the speed will be the same.
Lower horsepower will mean that a car will take longer to get there alright...

Same box, same ratios, same engine? Same revs. Just the lower hp car would find it less comfortable at that speed and would prob take longer to get there.

It was the same crack with the Bravos, mine was, well, you know and the rest were mostly standard. All sat at 85mph at 4krpm in 5th gear, 6th was slightly higher but not by much

One big problem is having two "identical" cars, one of which is 8 years older than the other :P

Not a problem when you're dgt... every car potentially has the same engine :pac:

A car sold new with 120bhp and only 80bhp 8 years later is seriously I'll :)

Contrary to popular belief cars don't loose a lot of power over the years, its usually inflated manufacturer figures. Jap stuff is usually way over estimated, 190celicas make 160ish even when fresh, dc2 integras make 170ish when quoted at 187.

A 10 year old150bhp golf will make 150 though, German stuff is on the money apart from MPower cars and RS Audi's and the like over here but a lot of that is down to 99ron fuel not being available here

A lot of people are misguided due to Top Gear but the cars they ran were seriously ill

Also Fifth Gear did a segment on additives but they used a car (Rover GTI) that would have been tuned for 95ron therefore unable to take advantage of the better fuel

Theres my piece of useless info for the day

It annoyed the BMW 8series forums greatly when top gear did the 850i vs CL600 test. The dyno showed the 850i was putting down something like 293bhp.. they claimed it lost 30bhp vs the stock 326bhp and it lost that round. Problem was that model was the 300bhp version (the 326bhp was a different engine). Never mind the fact the CL600 was an entire generation and at least a decade newer so it was a stupid comparison anyhow.

So after nearly 20years their $hitty tired 850i was still putting out over 95% of its BHP, despite "loosing" that test due to their pis$ power research abilities.

The first 156 came out in 1997/1998, was still available in 2005/2006. ;)

Thanks anyway though folks, cleared things up for me...:o

Have to go wash the friends car 'cos I lost though...:pac:
