Difference between Personal Trainer and Strength & Conditioning coach?

    I was at a GAA club meeting last night and we were discussing about pre season training

    I was advocating getting in a strength and conditioning coach to assess players and get a program of circuit training exercises that we would follow for 7/8 weeks in the club hall, using light weights, med balls etc with progressions after 3/4 weeks.

    Some of the other club members wanted to use a local lad who is a personal trainer and has his own gym at his house to take clients. he could supply equipment for us to use in the hall.

    So basically, what is the difference between the two? As in, their qualifications and capability to do the job of setting out a proper pre season programme.

    I think you've stumbled upon the answer yourself there really. Most of the standard PT courses here only skirt the issue of sports specific conditioning and cycles, and the S&C courses don't have the best reputation either.

    You're looking for someone who has the ability to assess/test/monitor/programme your players individually or groups, understand the demands of GAA and can programme accordingly, all of which only comes with experience...so that's what I'd look for straight off, some experience in dealing with the above.

    Those people are unfortunately rare enough in this country and quite frankly there doesn't seem to be the demand or money for coaches to go that route. There's more money and less hassle in one-to-one or group fat loss training.
