nah they are still busy with the Spratly Island

The only people on that Island are there to mind a radar, if they are still there that is. So it's not really inhabited. Which makes us the closest inhabited landmass.
    .

    What Island?

This place http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunvegan is a couple of km closer to Rockall than I can get on any point of Ireland on google earth. And that's far from the closest part of Britain to it.

    What Island?
    St. Kilda

and it's unpatriotic to let facts get in the way of our claim :pac:

Ah the British and their commemorative plaques.
It seems that their logic works like this.

    1.See something.
    2.Put commemorative plaque on it.
3.You now have rightful ownership and moral high-ground.

(sometimes they even use step 4. Place citizens on it...shout about democracy)

And treating any locals like subhumans.

    Something about sandwiches

Here's the link to it on google maps:
    Rockall

It seems to be closer to Scotland alright.

Also, look at this link about how the UK claims it:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exclusive_economic_zone#United_Kingdom

note the image on the right with the shape of the UKs sea border...

Don't worry my friends our army of liberation will soon set sail and then you will share in our glorious bountiful republic where healthcare and water are available to all who can afford it.

Well in fairness, its closer to Britain than it is to us.....

And the Falklands are closer to Ireland.

You may not have heard of G2.

But let's just say the Russian sphere of influence no longer overlaps with ours. ;)

Newly-released State papers have revealed several hidden stories from 1981 including fears that the Russians were looking at Rockall, an outcrop off Donegal, as a possible Cold War base!

The outcrop – 250 miles off Donegal – is claimed by Ireland, Britain, Denmark and Iceland!

The Irish Intelligence Service (G2) believed that the USSR would try to seize the rock and use it for an underwater missile base.

Maybe we should stick a claim in so. I'm sure the Argies will just walk away then rather than fight on 2 fronts.:)

Sounds like someone in Leinster house got a bit too involved while watching James Bond and let his imagination run away with him. :)

Either way, I'd say a strongly worded letter had Comrad Brezhnev running scared.

As we've apparently laid claim, they are known as the Fecklands.

It's not just the Brits we've got to keep an eye out for Viking fifth columnists.

Picture taken yesterday of L.E Roisin trolling the rock

I think our first step needs to be to re-name our warships.

Warnings from "L.E Róisín" or "L.E Eithne" will not scare the likes of....

    HMS Argonaut
    HMS Victory
    HMS Ark Royal
    HMS Resolute
    HMS Serpent
    HMS Vigilant
    HMS Daring
    HMS X-Factor
    etc

L.E. Facekicker would see see all those off just by looking at 'em.

    What a good idea.
Now I think about it, (wherever the hell it is), it's obviously British .
    As English as Finchley.
Must defend democracy on this rock. Democracy, chaps - and oil.

Remember the Cod Wars. Iceland's small patrol boats against the RN. Remember who won.

Vigilant could taken out by a trawler.

Are we sure it's not Spanish? They love claiming tiny islands.

Lets face it, if ownership of Rockall had been Irish all along, some property developer would have paid €25Bn for it and built 15,000 dodgy apartments there.
