Those Brits are up to their old tricks. And the Vikings too. Trying to claim our rocks which might have a bit of oil and gas lying deep beneath.

IT'S claimed by the British, the Danes and the Icelanders but the Irish Navy has again reinforced this State's claim to Rockall.

The LE Roisin exercised Ireland's sovereign rights over the craggy outcrop in a "showing the flag" patrol.

The rock lies 230 nautical miles northwest of Bloody Foreland in Co Donegal.

It may only be a dot in the Atlantic, but ownership of the tiny island -- which rises 70ft out of the ocean and is a mere 83ft across -- is hotly contested given its location.

It sits on what is believed to be vast oil and gas fields worth billions of euro.

The Defence Forces said the Irish Naval Service routinely conducts maritime security patrols to exercise Ireland's sovereign rights.

In 1955 the British announced they had landed a party on Rockall and taken possession of it in the name of Queen Elizabeth. A flagpole was erected, the Union Jack hoisted and a commemorative plaque bolted to the granite.

This is war AH. And it makes it even worse that it is our former oppressors who are trying to steal our rocks. The Brits and the Vikings, bloody cheek of 'em.

So I'm calling on a small volunteer force from After Hours to go out there and inhabit that rock and stand down any attempt to take it by the Vikings and the British Navy. Everyone here had a grandfather who defended the GPO in 1916 so we definitely know how to do it.

And when you defend our precious rock with all that lovely oil and gas beneath not only will you be a hero but we'll all be filthy rich.

Oh, no, wait a minute. We won't be rich. Our government will sell it out to the lowest bidder and the Irish public will never see any of the benefits of our own natural resources.

In fact just leave it to the Brits and the Vikings to sort out, we'll just sit on the sidelines, eat popcorn and watch the battle.

We can hardly stick a knitting needle in to an apple, never mind drill for oil offshore. Leave the Brits and the vikings to it, we can beg for a few crumbs off the table through the EC / IMF or whoever.

n.b did an Irish person ever set foot on Rockall, or stay the night there? I think back in the 50's some SAS camped there. Most Inhospitable place.

jasus deres no grip in d'aul webbies for climbing the cliffs up it. no turf for an aul fire when ye do get to de top, soaking wet after fallin back in. no pub either.

It seems that their logic works like this.

1.See something.
2.Put commemorative plaque on it.
3.You now have rightful ownership and moral high-ground.

(sometimes they even use step 4. Place citizens on it...shout about democracy)

Anyway, I'm just happy they didn't manage to sink themselves sailing round it.
End of the day Might will equal Right...as ever. So Britain has itself some new oil/gas.

Wouldn't it be ironic though if Scotland laid claim due to proximity, and that brought about Scottish independence due to independence votes rocketing.

The union broken up through claiming land disputed by Ireland...the irony would cause republicans to cream their pants en masse.

The only people on that Island are there to mind a radar, if they are still there that is. So it's not really inhabited. Which makes us the closest inhabited landmass.

Also the British maps put Rockall in Donegal , as does the underwater topology.
