Very intense workload if you intend working full time. What are your subjects?

I've just got accepted for the March cohort for secondary also. I'm wondering if anyone might know about the number of exams amount of exams or when they are eg July? and arough estimate of assignments.
Also-if by any chance anyone knew when do the September cohort do their teaching practice. Is it in November aswell.
Any insights would be much appreciated. thanks!

    Hey,

I was wondering if anyone doing this course is working full time outside of education? If so, how do you manage to get time for your teaching practice? I'm trying to get my head around how I could support myself since this is a two year course.

    Thanks!

Hey lads, currently doing the course started in october, have had one assignment handed in just after xmas, another due in monday, so 2 assignments in 5 months, out on tp the 27th for a month also. We don't have a written exam until june/july 2013 when the course finishes. As far as I know it's only one or two written exams, rest is continous assessment.

As regards to working full time outside of education, I work 4-5 days a week 9-6,but some weeks your ok with the workload, others your under a lot of pressure.

    Hope this helps!

I also started last October and was working part time up until Christmas, seasonal closure until March so everything has worked out in that respect, but as anfieldrd mentioned some weeks are more hectic that others, it's just a matter of keeping on top of things or trying to at least. :)

How do you manage to get the blocks of teaching practice in? You must have understanding bosses!

I'm fortunate in one way that I work mostly from 5 in the evening until around 11 or so which is great for TP but have to work around it for lectures but as it's only once or twice a week its manageable.

thanks anfieldrd- that's hugely helpful- much appreciated. So basically if I'm right in understanding you, your first teaching practice if you started course in October isn't until late Feb? I have an offer for commencing at Hibernia this March and going to see if i can defer until next October as I think it would be far easier for me to manage work load and tp.

There are no jobs in teaching so that's why there proberly wasn't many on the course. I trained with Hibernia 3 years ago for the H.Dip in Primary Education & am still unemployed along with most of my class.

That is scary.. and i was thinking about doing the course

Hi, Has anyone interviewed for The accounting or business subjects yet? I have my interview tomorrow night and I'm really nervous. Would appreciate any help or tips you could give me. Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 Chelmsford

hi- have to type on phone so ignore my grammar! my subject is english but they asked things like-
why do you want to be a teache
    why the hibernia course
how would you deal with parents ( who are partners in the education process)
-using IT in the classroon- its potential
    what are my IT skills
how would you engage two students sitting at back of class not engaging (what would you do)
    how do you prepare to
walk into class of unfamiliar students
how would you tackle a challenging or 'boring'part of syllabus
tackling literacy ( in ur case numeracy!)- why did i think it might be more of an issue today
    importance of planning in teachibg
my thoughts on exams versus continuous assessment
what novel would i love to teach

dont be nervous- show them u have the confidence to stand in front of students and take control and that ur genuinely passionate and know what ur getting into.
pepper ur answers with things that show ur familiar with the syllabus/ rough outline of exams/ teaching guidelines etc and what might be different from when u studied

you'll be fine. be positive in there!

ps. also: also- another question was how would i break the news to a really eager student who wanted to do honours that they could only do pass level

My degree is in English and music.
Just wondering if this rules me out since they dont offer music and you have to study a second subject.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 Chelmsford

    El Neilo-
I think there's two things to consider. Firstly do you want to be qualified to teach music in school or are you happy to be an English teacher only? The teaching council won't certify you to teach music unless it's been a methodology as part of your teaching training.

Secondly- you may be able to do something else as an alternative second methodology instead of music but you won't be qualified to teach this subject in school just because you've done it as a methodology.

That's my understanding of the situation anyhow.

One way or the other I would strongly recommend you ring up and just ask to talk to the course coordinator / relevant person. It's not going to compromise you in any way to ask the questions- I have found them to be very helpful.
    Best of luck

Hi, I'm applying for the next cohort in September. Just wondering how people are finding the course etc?
Is it very time consuming and how are people juggling it with other work commitments?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 Cork2008

I'd be interested in hearing how people are getting on also, in term of juggling the workload with work/childcare. Please?!

Hey I have my interview on Wednesday, my subjects are Maths and Geography, I was just wondering would anyone have any tips or advice on questions that may come up in the interview??

    Hey guys,

Is anyone applying for the March 2013 cohort? Im going to apply this weekend at some point. Still no idea how i'll manage the months off for teaching practice but its a small price to pay to do what i have always dreamed of.

Does anyone know when the teaching blocks are if you start in March? Also any info on the schedule i.e when are classes? Id really appreciate some advice.

What do the TP involve? Ive read that its 12 hours but that works out at only 3 hours per week in a 4 week block. Am i right?? That seems like nothing if your off work for the entire month. What are you doing the rest of the time?

    Thanks in advance :-)

the 12 hours is 12 hours per week, 9 hours teaching in your first subject and 3 in your second, for the second bock its nine in your second then 3 in your first and for the final block its meant to be half and half give or take, so you're talking almost 180 hours over the duration. I started last October and it is tough going despite being a part-time, "flexible" course but it's just a matter of putting your head down and getting the work done.

    Hi everyone =]
I just posted this question but i'm new to this so I think i've posted it in the wrong place altogether :/
I have just started filling in my application for the Hibernia Hdip in post primary teaching today. I'm not very good at interviews so was just wondering if anyone has done it recently. I only know people who have done it in the primary teaching and from what I have heard its a little different. My subjects are Geography and History...I would really appreciate any help you might be able to give me!!
Nervous wreck and I haven't even got the application sent in yet :P
    Thank you!!!

Don't be so stressed! I did both the primary and secondary interview and they're very similar in terms of structure and the types of questions they ask you.
You should have a look back through this forum and people have posted the typos of questions that they were asked. If you're worried about the interview itself just practice answers for any eventual questions with a friend. Other than that you need to have a spiel prepared on why you want to be a teacher etc. As well as that have some info about your two subjects and why you like them and look up what the curriculum is and how it is examined. Then have something about ict in the class and continuous assessment.
Like the interview isn't particularly tough if you prepare answers and practise! They're not trying to catch you out!
Best bet have a look through this forum and copy and paste questions people have put up which they were asked!

Had the interview last week, accepted today, off to maynooth in the March, really looking forward to it :D. Anyone else starting in March?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭loveofliving

I am hoping to start this course in October. How have you been finding it?

Could you give me some information on the course structure if you start in October, i.e what actually happens in October when you start, is there an immediate week of class or something or when is the first time you've to do something like that? Also when exactly are the three teaching practice blocks? Really need to know all this before I tell my employer...

    Thanks in advance :)
