Do you mean that you had an external hard disk AND a usb key plugged in at the same time? As I remember it you can only use one usb port at a time.

No, only the usb plugged in.

Yep, it locks up completely...can't do anything. To solve the problem i've just been switching it off at the power point - how do you reboot?

I have had a 2g usb plugged into the back - i'll take that out & see if that fixes it. Not sure about the rest of what you are talking about.

How much space would a 1hr show take up? I do have a 500g exterrnal hardeive, nbut just wondering as i haven't recorded anything yet.

Yes but just because you have not recorded anything doesnt mean it isnt being constantly written to.

That is because there is a timeshift function built into the Arivas (for pausing live TV). It is turned on by default. You need to turn it off. Its in the media menu. Turn Timeshift OFF. You only need to do this once as it stores the preferred settings on the USB drive itself after that.

If you don't do that little flash drive will eventually die from being written to.

That is what is causing your problem. Easily Solved.

Hi there, I updated my ferguson box with the newest firmware. And now youtube is availabe to play. But when I start to play long youtube clips(about 1hour long), after 8-10min youtube video clips stop to play on my satellite box.

Did somebody have such problems with youtube?

    regards

    Hi,
I have just installed the 150 using the Astra satelite. I have received all bbc's, itv's etc no problem. the only problem is I am unable to access all the saorview channels. I have selected the terrestrial scan option but this has not worked.
Has anyone encountered the same problem? Any solutions or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Do you have an aerial connected to the box ?

Ok try plugging the aerial directly into the tv and see can get receive tv3 or tg4 analogue, that will give a fair indication as to whether you are receiving a signal or not.

I am not able to pick up either and the picture quality for RTE and Net2 are very poor. We were using a Skybox for viewing before this. Is it a question of an extremely weak signal or do we need to buy another aerial? I thought the signal was being switched off.
Thanks for your help with this.

You most likely need an aerial , the analogue signal is being switched off but the digital signal will still delivered to you using an aerial.

Have you looked at the Saorview coverage checker?

If you want any more info. about aerials, or the best transmitter to receive from, start a new thread, giving your location.

Will this box work with a Sky dish pointed in the same direction as for Sky? Does it work with any Sky dish?

Is there an advantage over this box, as against keeping my sky box (cancelling subscription) and watching the free to air channels on my Sky box?

    Thanks

Yes it will work with a Sky dish. It also needs a TV aerial for the Irish channels.

The advantages Vs a Sky box without subscription:
    1) A Sky box without subscription will not record. This box will record, but not series link. It's a kind of a timer setup for the UK channels. You would need to buy a hard drive seperately.

    2) It allows re-ordering of the channels to your liking. I.e. 1=RTE1 2:RTE2 7:BBC1 etc

    The downsides:
    1) No 7 day guide for the UK channels (only now and next)

    2) No auto retuning when channels move transponder (About an hours work 3 to 4 times a year to keep all channels)

My advice would be if you have a Sky box then keep it and get a Saorview box or TV for the Irish channels. Set up all the free UK channels as favourites and switch between them using the blue button. This will be no good for recording UK channels however.

You could always keep the Sky box and the ariva - so you can watch one programme and record another programme (on satellite).

Yes there are advantages on getting one..

Sky boxes without a subscription are a kludged box. By that I mean it has all the encrypted channels in with the free ones. A serious of seperating these channels and then button presses and having a seperate input on your TV to watch saorview channels via another bought box, the lack of recording means that they are near useless without subscription. This is by design. Sky don't want you to leave. They also dont do the Irish stations when you leave Sky.

A Combo box allows you to watch all the Saorview and Uk satellite stations (and the possibility of foreign stations) in customisable channel lists. One remote control, one channel list, no input switching on your TV, record facilities, movie media playing via USB, youtube etc.

    oh and no bills.

Sky boxes are for watching Sky. They dont want you to leave, they want your money. Sick of bills ? Unplug the Sky box, Take a hammer to it and get a fta combo. You will never look back.

Where can I get the latest firmware 1.20.B1 and what's the procedure for installing it? Same as for the 120?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭PatchZ

    Here you go:
    http://www.ferguson-digital.eu/en/download/HD-Satellite-Receivers/Ariva-150-Combo/A150Combo_1.20B1.zip/
Not sure about the 120, assume it's the same or similar, but basically put firmware on a usb stick, plug it into box, go to menu and select 'Upgrade From USB' option. As always make sure not to power down the box during the flash burn. The box then reboots itself and away you go. Be aware though that you will be back to default settings which includes the loss of previously programmed channels.

    Right one more question.

I brought a wifi adapter (Ferguson W02) but I'm having trouble connecting to my eircom router.

I've entered the WPA Key and all that but each time I get a 'Timeout, unable to connect' message.

However, whenever I disabled the the WPA protection on the router it worked fine but obviously I don't want to have no password on my router.

    Any solution?

Some older devices are not capable of WPA or WPA2. Have you tried WEP?
Also some very old devices enter the key as HEX instead of ASCII. There are some places that allow conversion from one to the other, so you enter the converted password.

I did the upgrade yesterday - here's a few notes that might save you frustration:

Since the update will clear all your channels you have to do a new search - you might be better to wait until after Wednesday when the BBC are changing some frequencies (or you can do a manual add-on later).

Inside the zip file there's a pdf with the installation instructions - much the same as above.

After the system reboots you may have a heart attack as the only channels you will have are the Saorview ones - and the tuning menu will have the satellite access greyed out. Took me some swearing but I found the answer was to go menu - installation - satellite list and then scroll down to Astra 2A and Eurobird 1 and press OK - a heart symbol will be placed on each. Now when you go back to the menu - installation - the multi satellite search will no longer be greyed out.

After it searches and finds all the channels (it will place Saorview at positions 1 to 10) you now have the pleasure of editing them into decent order - a total pain. I downloaded the editor they provided (you dump the found channels into a file, and edit them on a PC, and upload it again) - however it is pure torture and it's all trial and error - very little help available.

I can only hope some kind soul like STB will make available a decent set of channels (hint hint!)

Note that just to confuse you, exactly the same channels, ID numbers etc are listed for some channels (mainly BBC) that seem to be coming from transponders with exactly the same frequency on both Eurobird and Astra 2A - I wonder will that also resolve itself by Wednesday?

Finally - you will have to manually add BBCHD and BBC1 HD - the automatic scan doesn't find them. (freq 10847, Vertical, symbol rate 23000 not 22000 like the rest)

The only change I noticed so far is that YouTube is working again, and they have added Vimeo.

Just to say BBC HD & BBC1 HD were found okay for me after the upgrade. I searched after 7pm so I got BBC4 too. This, however, left me short of CBBC & CBeebies so I manually added them. So I think it depends on the time of day you do your channel search.
