    That's insane.

And only in the Republican south could a church double up as a hunting lodge!
He also attributed his success as a hunter to the Lord's divine wisdom, crediting God for guiding his bullet to kill a lion and the mystery of a bear continuing to walk after he'd shredded its heart and lungs with a gunshot.

    facepalm

Republicans = nuts in many ways.
    Enough said!

Ok so this guy's views are not surprising coming from a southern Republican. What is scary is the fact that he is a medical doctor and member of the powerful US Committee on Science and Technology.

Can medical doctors not have religious beliefs then?

Can medical doctors not have religious beliefs then?

Well i'm referring to facts. Something doctors should be used to dealing with. I have no interest in religion.

Not if they're scientifically unsound beliefs. Calling embryology "lies from hell" is slightly concerning for a doctor.

They can if they are able to compartmentalize. If a medical doctor applies his or her faith to how they treat their patients and reach ethical conclusions then they shouldn't be doctors in the first place.

It's pretty well-known that the modern republicans are just pandering to the craziest of right-wingers and special interest Christian groups, as was predicted by Barry Goldwater back in the 60s.

Even Newt Gingrich constantly said obviously historic falsities during the 2012 Republican debates, even though he has some univeristy degree in history.

It's just the easiest way for them to get votes.

Disheartening post of the day award Petersberg.
It's an affront to science that a clod like this can have control or influence over any scientific body. A disbelief in basic scientific principles should exclude him from any such processes when his primitive beliefs can have a detrimental impact.

And this is just one of many reasons why I hope Obama gets reelected. Romney has even bigger idiots than the democrats wanting back into the house >_>

    I know, thoroughly depressing.

On a lighter note, the 'FEMAIL TODAY' byline to that page of the lovely Daily Mail has some riveting, uplifting stories.
Actually, no, I just want to die now....

Evolution is not a scientific principle. Its a theory and is a more recent belief than creationism.

Evolution is not a scientific principle. Its a theory and is a more recent belief than creationism.

It's also got a lot more evidence to back it up than creationism does.

The theory that electrical discharges cause lightning is a more recent belief than that the gods are angry, but it is also a more accurate belief. Evoultion is as proven and certain as any other scientific theory.

You don't understand what a scientific theory is, hardly surprising when you see posts like this http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=76280724&postcount=12

The missing links are still missing.

If you want to believe you came from a primordial soup feel free to believe it.

I prefer to believe in a creator and I'm entitled to believe it.

A huge number of intermediate forms have now been found in the fossil record and more are being found all the time. The 'missing link' argument is long dead. When I am at home with access to you tube I will find some videos on the subject for anyone who may be interested.

Evolution is not a belief it is a scientific theory. A scientific theory is a well-tested, unifying principle that explains a body of facts and the laws based on them. It is not a theory in the way the word theory is regularly used.
You're entitled to believe in Batman if that's what you want. Stating that you're entitled to believe whatever you like isn't an argument, it's a statement of willful ignorance in spite of evidence to the contrary.

Belief in God and belief in evolution are NOT mutually exclusive.

Some people like to set it up as if it's one or the other but I know plenty of smart intelligent people who believe in God and accept evolution.

Personally, I think this guy's beliefs are silly. But it's *less silly* that people who go to Church and say they are Christian while actively ignoring what's in the Bible.

80% of Ireland reports being Christian.

What about not believing in embryology? Would you not agree that's ill-advised especially since there is plenty of evidence to back it up?

That's not less silly at all. Silly is disputing how foetuses are formed.

I actually quite like this kind of thing. They cheer me no end. Because it means we're winning. And by "we", I mean liberal-minded, scientifically-aware, logical people all over the world. Think about it...fifty years ago, most Americans believed in the Biblical version of events, abortion was illegal, gays were persecuted, blacks discriminated against. Yet slowly, but surely, things have begun to change. Abortion is legal, blacks are closer to full equality than ever, a huge proportion of Americans believe in evolution and the Big Bang, gays have more rights than ever, and atheism is on the rise across the country. Conservatives are losing the Culture Wars, and they know it. Hence they are clinging to their out-moded ways in a desperate manner, and producing ever more rabid and idiotic statements on everything from rape to evolution. They're losing, their end is nigh, they're hunkering down and battening the hatches, becoming more and more ideologically inflexible and extreme, and their numbers are shrinking all the time- for that we should be very grateful. So, more clips and videos like this please...it proves, to me, at least, that we're moving in the right direction.

People...there's no point in attempting rational debate with the likes of tatranska. They believe what they believe through faith alone, have no knowledge of scientific concepts, and even less desire to learn about them. So, you might as well be debating with a tree as debating with such people. You'll only annoy yourself.

“Christianity has a built-in defense system: anything that questions a belief, no matter how logical the argument is, is the work of Satan by the very fact that it makes you question a belief. It's a very interesting defense mechanism and the only way to get by it -- and believe me, I was raised Southern Baptist -- is to take massive amounts of mushrooms, sit in a field, and just go, "Show me"
