No, I meant the mother got married recently. Initially I assumed that he was the bio dad and that they had had their kids then got married, but now I see someone here said that was her step dad. I didnt see the pictures or the press conference so not meaning any picure.

I think the step-dad being referred to is Coral Jones step-dad and April's step grandfather. Paul Jones, Coral's husband is April's father.

The omens aren't good after so many hours, particularly for a missing toddler.

I take it they almost certainly have their man otherwise they wouldn't have released his name?! What is it with so many ex soldiers, terrible dodgy skanks particularly nowadays.. but soldier sounds sexy, right girls. biggest no hope, but for the core degenerates imo

In one newspaper (the Telegraph) I read that the Army never heard of him! He had told locals he left the Army coz of a back problem, but the Ministry of Defence said yesterday it had no record of him serving in any branch of the Armed Forces.

Gets weirder. Who remembers the ex soldier, in an episode of Danny Dyers 'deadliest' men he was far from it... could abducted a kid, maybe but that's where his threat ended. this guy reminds me of him

It's better than beating the sh!te out of someone or water-boarding them, for a lie detector test all he has to say is no comment.
Not really torture per say just a nudge to get the to the truth....

You said you were against torture of any type? Sleep deprivation IS torture and considered to be a severe kind. You can die if you go without sleep for too long. Also, no, you cannot just veto questions on a lie detector test. Otherwise there would be no point to it.

To the people who advocate torture, I understand how sickening it is for an adult to prey on a child. However, there are VERY good reasons why torture is not implemented in civilised countries.

    It can give false confessions.

It is damaging to the person physically and therefore ethically and morally wrong.

You cannot say you have more respect for the rights of the victim as a reason for advocating torture because that dilutes the integrity of the concept of rights in general - if one person has more rights than another, then very quickly things could spiral out of control and you would have people abusing that distinction so that situations like Nazi Germany arise.

How would torture methods be controlled and standardised?

    Who would administer them?

How would we ensure that the police didn't abuse their power and go too far?

What if the person in custody were innocent?

How would you reconcile with imprisoning a man for torturing another man and then permitting several officers to torture the first man? This would mean the government and state employees would have a licence to act outside of the law.

If an officer were off duty and suspected someone of a crime could he legally beat them, waterboard them? How would one establish that he acted with sufficient evidence?

How much evidence or suspicion would be necessary to permit torture?

If a teenager committed a crime would they be subject to torture or would their parents have to agree?

Would anyone suspected of anything be in danger of being tortured without sufficient evidence?

How long and what methods would be safe to use? If someone has precarious health and were more sensitive and the torture killed them, how would we establish whether this were a crime or not?

What if the torture method caused permanent physical injury?

How much torture is necessary for each crime? How would this be measured?

If the suspect confessed due to torture how would we establish it wasn't a false confession?

Once people are given the opportunity to commit atrocities without consequence, they go too far. Studies show that people are very persuadable in instances like that. The investigation of a crime should be carried out rationally and once emotion dictates the interrogation method then that same emotion will cloud judgement.

There simply isn't any logical reason why torture should be used. Understandably people are very angry in situations like this but there are good reasons why law enforcement don't stoop to the same behaviour as criminals.

So he could be released by morning..

From the new information I really think there is more to this, but don't know what.

When they released his name and photo I was sure he would be charged, but surely he would have been by now if they could. It's weird ...

    With what?

You may be onto something there. Maybe RTE were actually behind the abduction in order to boost the figures for the film?

    Seriously...

With regards to his apparent non-position as an actual soldier, people who think they are army material to the point they're pertetually "in the theatre" without ever having bn are most certainly mmmmad.. but if he's not even the guy and we are being fed details about him then wtf

Normal parents who want their children to have a normal childhood of the kind they had and their grandparents had and their great-grandparents before them. Child abductions are incredibly, incredibly rare and up until this incident the area was seen as an idyllically safe place to raise children and allow them some of the freedoms that previous generations enjoyed.

A more appropriate question is what sort of person asks such a horribly judgemental question about the actions of a currently a grieving, terrified family?

nonsense,a 5 yr old should be asleep in bed at that hour or at least ready for bed not roaming the streets

She wasn't "roaming the streets", she was just outside her front garden with her friends like a lot of other children of a similar age all over Ireland and the UK. Its a quiet area, a housing estate ffs not a main road, they had no reason to think she was at risk.

    Do you have children?

She wasn't roaming the streets, she was playing outside her home with her friends and the bedtime her parents set for her is absolutely none of your business. And if it turns out the man currently in custody did abduct her, her bedtime is utterly irrelevant as he is her friend's father and could have kidnapped her at 10am, 12pm, 2pm etc, if he had been determined to.

A veritable toddler like she appeared certainly shouldn't be out anywhere unsupervised let alone at that hour, wtf but these things happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Malena72

April's parents had just returned from a parent/teachers meeting and her mum put on April's coat to let her out to play with her friends while she prepared tea, she was only out for about 10 minutes (this is what I read anyway)

WTF is a 'veritable toddler?' A toddler is a one to three year old, April is 5 and hasn't been one for nearly half her life.

fact is she wasant watched she wasant safe she was abducted, god only knows what else sadly happened,

Oh stop finding fault with the mother. Kids should be able to play on their own doorstep for 10 minutes. The fault lies with the beast who took her and not the mother. The poor child has cerebral palsy and ibs for god sake and that animal should not have been cruising the estate looking for kids. I want my child to have freedom and not be chained to the house.

Oh for gods sake - she wasn't hanging out in a drugs den. She was outside her front door!!! Are you a parent?

Sadly abductions have previously happened when parents were present too.

Who knows, whoever took her could have been so determined to take her he might have even done it in front of her parents. It sure as hell didn't matter to him that a load of children (who could identify him) saw him do it.

No one is perfect. All it takes is a split second. A bit of compassion for both April and her parents wouldn't go amiss here.
