The Stunning frontman slams Arthur's Day 'smugness'

If people have never heard of The Stunning or The Walls, I wouldn't be so fast to put it down to ignorance. I'd put it down to there being too many bands putting "the" at the start of their name.

Seriously, how fcuking unoriginal is this? Do they blindfold themselves, spin around and decide to pluralise the first thing they see while adding "the"? I know that as time goes on, more and more bands are created and therefore, finding an unused name is getting more difficult. But if your name is gonna be unoriginal, how is your music gonna be?

Just by sitting on my arse using my computer, I thought it would be funny if there was a band called The Monitors (they do exist). Theres also a band called The Mice (here). For now, I am gonna copyright the names The Whiteboard, The Teacups and The Tesco Finest Shopping Bag so any upcoming band will have to use their creativity for their name too.

That's highly creative of you. How eagle eyed of you to spot that one of the most common words in the English language is often used in the name of bands.

I've been hearing the same word a lot in song lyrics too, imagine, just goes to show originality is dead.

google shows a few bands called the teacups. And The Tesco finest shopping bag are in Whelans tonight.

Exactly! On the website it says "We’ve invited massive music names and local artists to plug in and play at pubs right across Ireland, all to celebrate the man behind the pint, Arthur Guinness." Nowhere on the website do they claim Arthur's Day is celebrating Irish culture. They are however, supporting Irish entrepreneurs through the Arthur Guinness fund, which is not a bad thing.

Look if you drink Guinness, great - half price Guinness all night! If you don't even like it, don't get sucked into the whole thing of having to raise a glass of Guinness at 5.59pm. Just go out and enjoy some of the international music acts over here for under €20 (when else will you get that?) or head to your local and catch one of the many Irish acts for free, all they while drinking your usual drink.

I agree, a more worthy event that has grown a lot over the last three years and is not grasping or cynical is culture night (last Friday).

I hope in ten years time this is a fixture in the calender and diageo day is a distant memory.

I myself won't be celebrating Arthur's day. I can't sacrifice 3 days of gastroenteritis for one day of drinking that soup.
