Don't you see? That's what he's getting at. Arthurs day is supposed to be promoting Irish music and Guinness - what he's saying is that they are only interested in promoting Guinness. They get foreign bands over to attract punters to make money. It's a contradiction.

Is this band you're going to see funded/supported by Guinness or Diageo? If not then you have missed the point. Diageo are interested in one thing - selling guinness, not Irish music. As far as I can see the guy was just making that clear to anyone who wasn't paying attention.

Don't be rediculous, of course it is to sell more Guinness. But give me some headline Irish bands that would draw a crowd, without trotting out the same bands over and over??
Also, scratch below the headline bands and there is plenty of local talent.

Cant believe the amount of people who have never heard of 'The Stuning' and 'The Walls'! And I wasn't even bought up in Ireland.

Oh and as for the Arthurs Day thing, of course its totally marketing, why do you think the date keeps changing each year for a start? I already drink the stuff on a night out, I dont need a special day of the year to remind me about it.

    In case you haven't noticed...

No it isn't. He's expecting it to be provided to unknown bands.

There have been many other small scale events that do such already.

    Hard Working Class Heros
    Bud Rising
    Heineken Green Energy
    King Kong Club
    Emergenza

These are all done on a much smaller scale because the unknown/emerging bands don't have a big enough pull to sustain an event the size of "Arthurs Day." They could even be so low below the radar, that who ever the booking agent is, simply doesn't know of them. For the most parts in the events above, the bands have to put themselves forward.

This is what I'm getting at. And what he is choosing not to mention. And me going to see a gig that was specifically targetted for tonight in town is an example of it. Without this commotion about Arthurs Day as an event, it'd be a harder to get together a crowd.

If people have never heard of The Stunning or The Walls, I wouldn't be so fast to put it down to ignorance. I'd put it down to there being too many bands putting "the" at the start of their name.

Seriously, how fcuking unoriginal is this? Do they blindfold themselves, spin around and decide to pluralise the first thing they see while adding "the"? I know that as time goes on, more and more bands are created and therefore, finding an unused name is getting more difficult. But if your name is gonna be unoriginal, how is your music gonna be?

Just by sitting on my arse using my computer, I thought it would be funny if there was a band called The Monitors (they do exist). Theres also a band called The Mice (here). For now, I am gonna copyright the names The Whiteboard, The Teacups and The Tesco Finest Shopping Bag so any upcoming band will have to use their creativity for their name too.

Fair play to Steve Wall i say. Guinness/Diageo say it's a day not only to remember Arthur Guinness, but also promote Irish culture. Can't do that if you have no headline Irish acts lads!

    just read this

Government urged to bring forward Sale of Alcohol Bill
The Joint Committee on Health and Children today called on the Government to bring the Sale of Alcohol Bill before the Oireachtas as soon as possible.
Ms Shortall had promised to bring forward proposals on the country's alcohol laws before her resignation.
Committee Chairman Jerry Buttimer praised Ms Shortall for her work in the area, paying tribute to her "achievements and commitment during her relatively short time in the Department of Health".
He said the motion calling for the Bill's introduction was timely, not least because of Ms Shortall's resignation but also because today was "being hijacked as a marketing gimmick by a major drinks company".

That's highly creative of you. How eagle eyed of you to spot that one of the most common words in the English language is often used in the name of bands.

I've been hearing the same word a lot in song lyrics too, imagine, just goes to show originality is dead.

Do guinness actually say this? Somebody else said it was to "promote Irish culture", but do they actually say anything along these lines in any press releases?

google shows a few bands called the teacups. And The Tesco finest shopping bag are in Whelans tonight.

Steve Wall is getting a hard time here and i think he makes a valid point. People are more interested in knocking him than discussing his remarks. The line up is mostly British and the artists are much more popular in the Uk than over here. So not everyone knows the Stunning? Ok well what about Ellie Goulding and Example...... who? One hit wonders both of 'em. Mumford are ok i suppose. Everything about this suggests it was planned overseas in Diageo towers and reinforces the worst Irish stereotypes.

    A day off.

Stunning fella is right. We should be doing a hell of a lot more to promote Irish bands. This would be a perfect opportunity to.

Exactly! On the website it says "We’ve invited massive music names and local artists to plug in and play at pubs right across Ireland, all to celebrate the man behind the pint, Arthur Guinness." Nowhere on the website do they claim Arthur's Day is celebrating Irish culture. They are however, supporting Irish entrepreneurs through the Arthur Guinness fund, which is not a bad thing.

Look if you drink Guinness, great - half price Guinness all night! If you don't even like it, don't get sucked into the whole thing of having to raise a glass of Guinness at 5.59pm. Just go out and enjoy some of the international music acts over here for under €20 (when else will you get that?) or head to your local and catch one of the many Irish acts for free, all they while drinking your usual drink.

    Where's the problem?

I didn't know the guy or his band either, maybe that's why they're not putting his name on the posters!

I agree, a more worthy event that has grown a lot over the last three years and is not grasping or cynical is culture night (last Friday).

I hope in ten years time this is a fixture in the calender and diageo day is a distant memory.

    Who?

I find it ironic that the first criticism of The Stunning's front man (in post number 2) was posted just after....................half past two!

It wasn't really a criticism, I genuinely didn't have a clue who he or the two bands he were in were. I do recognise that brewing up a storm song someone posted a while back. Didn't even realise that song was made by an Irish band.

Always thought the riff on Brewing Up a Storm was a bit too similar to Don't Fear The Reaper. Did Blue Oyster Cult get a writing credit I wonder?

I myself won't be celebrating Arthur's day. I can't sacrifice 3 days of gastroenteritis for one day of drinking that soup.

Ignorance is no excuse. The stunning were huge in the early 90's. Their debut album, Paradise in the Picturehouse, and their second album Once Around The World, both reached the #1 spot in the Irish Albums Chart.
