It's pretty much all because of this court case here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Upright_Music,_Ltd._v._Warner_Bros._Records_Inc.

Nintendo didn't clear any of the samples used.

Hip Tanaka was interviewed recently at 1up and was asked about Earthbound and he was really coy about talking about it and said Nintendo didn't want him to talk about it but said the music was what was holding back the western release of the game. It's a shame because he did something really original with his use of samples in game music, something that had never been done before. That court case pretty much put a stop to heavily sampled music genres like Hip Hop as well. I think Instead we got **** like Puff Daddy ripping off an 80's classic instead of real artists making something new out of samples.

He does create something different with his samples in earthbound so it's not a complete rip off and I consider it one of gaming's finest soundtracks. There's about 250 unique tracks in the game which is an incredible amount for a 16-bit game.

Well most games like that actually just ape the music from pop songs and they sound a bit different. The differrence between that and Earthbound is that it actually uses full recorded samples of the actual songs. If you remember the court cases over smapling in the 90's and how much of a dick the Beatles and their copyright holders can be about things like that then it's a whole different ball game or legal crap.

Bit harsh no? I'd hardly call it being a dick for wanting to protect your own work from lazy thieves trying to make money from it.

Well most artists if they learned of a near 20 year old videogame using samples of their songs would probably not care. The Beatles copyright holders would be the type to have their lawyer team on Defcon 3. Just look at the legal feud with Apple and how long that lasted.

Anyone have a clue as to what a Sega Multi Mega might be worth?

I've been on the lookout for awhile and only now have I come across a mint in-box example.

I just don't want to be paying over the odds! :)

    Thanks folks.

Apologies if it has already been mentioned in this thread but the 8-4 Play podcast had an excellent retrospective on the SNES. It is very long and spread over two episodes but is well worth listening to.

I got my one a year or more back unboxed but in great condition for about 125 Euro I think.
Came with a travel case and some other bits.

Don't let the video flag put you off. There's nothing actually offensive about the video.

Well young Elijah Wood of 3 years from now, is it still a baby's toy?

    back_to_the_future_elijah_wood.jpg

    Thought so.

Apparently, the damn image won't show.

If anyone is playing PS1 games on the PS3 make sure you turn off the upscaler in the options. Was playing Gaia Seed and it was really dark and murky and the aspect ratio was all wrong. Turned the upscaler off in the options and it looks so much better, colours are bright and vibrant as opposed to barely visible and the aspect ratio seemed correct.

Mitsuda and Uematsu are massive Prog rock fans and a lot of their stuff is influenced, some more so than others, by bands like Pink Floyd, Yes and Rush.

Any idea of specific Rush examples? I've been a massive fan for about 20 years and hearing some of their music in a game would be insane :D

Jeremy Parish did a big piece on it before on 1up but can't find anything. I don't think he necessarily stole music from any of the prog rock bands but he's definitely heavily influenced, he's said so himself. Sure listen to dancing mad, a 18 minute song on in a SNES games, nothing says self indulgent prog rock more than that!

Any of you guys ever see this? It's a Chinese NES clone but it's designed to look like the Neptune. Mental! Be great to get your hands on one for a Neptune project

Yeah I've seem them online while researching this Neptune case project and a few others thought the same as you.
Someone ordered one but unfortunately its actually very small.

I always figured someone would take the lazy route of case making, by only making a mold of the Neptune that would fit with the bottom half of a Model 2 Mega Drive, since it has a similar footprint...but then I saw this in the DIY Neptune thread.

Gave Double Dragon Neon a go last night. It's actually really good with very deep combat that's a big two fingered salute to simplistic ****e like Castle Crashers. Crappy backgrounds though :/

Tell you what, ****ing great 80's style soundtrack:

First time I saw a video for that game i immediately thought 'wtf is this ****' but after a while it really grew on me.

Still have yet to play it though!

Well the lack of animation on the backgrounds let it down a bit but Wayforward nailed the gameplay.

Not retro or anything but just noticed this on the latest version of iOS.

It's a bit worrying on the security side when you link your Facebook account to your contacts on iOS 6. Any phone numbers you have in your contacts will update with Facebook profile pics, email addresses, full names and whatever else the person has on Facebook.
That's all fine for people who you're Facebook friends with but it even does it for any number you happen to have saved on your phone!!

    Well Dodgy so it is.

The Facebook app has done that for years by itself. It didn't work either. I ended up with a bunch of South American people in my phone book.

Cool, I'll ask my girlfriend if she's up to doing a copy of it on canvas.
I think that would look nice on my man cave wall :)

Although she's changing from acrylics to oils this weekend after much consideration and Bob Rossification so it might not be the best time to task her with it.

I asked her to do a painting on my Egret 3 before but she reckons its very boring subject matter :(

It never did it for me, was it an option or something?
Now that Facebook is deeply integrated into the OS I see many security concerns over the next while. It is handy to be able to post from the notification centre but I've disabled all the other fancy integrated stuff.
