And Father Ted. Sometimes a lengthy series can do more damage than good. I'd rather they try cram all the best ideas in 6 episodes than spread them out over 20 and have some painfully bad and dull episodes!

I thought the 2 episodes had some real LOL moments. Not many but enough to make me want to watch the next episode. But it's all a matter of opinion I suppose :)

True enough, didn't think of that. Anyway just realised there is a second season being lined up so will be good to see some more episodes.

Thought it was excellent, some really nice throw away lines in it, maybe a bit subtle for some, don't think the young lads acting is that bad, and as has been said Steve Coogan's accent doesn't sound too bad to my untrained ear.

Oh, and Peter McDonald must have been living in a cryiogenic tank since I Went Down as he doesn't look a day older.

Splendid show, a valuable addition to our landscapes. Well done Mr O Dowd, a fair son of Ireland if ever there was one.

I really enjoyed it and found it funny as well as being a trip back in time (The sister was reading Smash Hits! - my bible at the time) Had some good lines in it too.

"Dad, do we have any cotton pads?"
    "You mean...sanitary pads?"
"Yeah, cos I'm gonna take my make up off with a tampon!"

Maybe it's my juvenile sense of humour but I found it funny, as did d'other half.

    Will be tuning in again.

This series is only 6 episodes long though, is that not a bit short

6 episodes is the standard run for sitcoms in British TV. It's mostly just the American shows that do longer runs.

Just watched the first two episodes together. Very patchy, some great lines and some cringyworthy stuff. As others mention the young lad is just not a good enough actor.

One other thing that bugged me and it is a bit nit-picking but for a show set in 1989 the young lad's home has some very modern features i.e. brand new composite front door etc.

    Will keep watching, though.

I noticed on an ad for this the other day a snippet of a scene filmed in De La Salle, Wicklow Town.

    aah... memories!

A bit 'cosy Irish caricature' for my liking

Touchy Feeley is a great character though!

The accent is fantastic, I'm not a huge fan of Coogan's but you've got to admire his commitment to the characters.

It wasn't exactly a laugh out loud comedy but I enjoyed watching it. I don't really like the main kid though, he's a shockingly bad actor.

Was the bullys' dad from the first episode the Tesco Mobile guy?

Yeah, Simon Delaney, hasn't done much apart from Tesco Mobile ads...

Also known for losing 15k on a question in the Irish "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire".

He was recently in the US series Touch with Kiefer Sutherland though so he's not doing too badly for himself.

Well I saw him in The Jerry Springer Opera (He was really good in it too) a while ago but I must admit that the first place my mind goes is the Tesco Mobile guy. It's just a very memorable role...

All the people saying it's crap did you guys think Fr Ted was crap too?? Moone boy is funny, it's silly and harmless. It's not some deep serial drama and it's not going to change the world but I don't expect it too. Everyone entitled to there opinion but personally I thought it was funny. Yeah the young kid is a bit cringey but he's barely in it enough to care. Seriously though the first episode and the whole father's therapy type thing was damn funny!!!

You did not just compare this programme to the genius that was Father Ted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭jojo86

No, I'm not comparing it to Ted in a sense. What I'm saying is the humor is similar in the sense it holds a fun house mirror up to society. Harmless fun. And probably when Ted started and I know I'm right, a lot of people just hated it for being a bit daft or whatever. That's where I am drawing my comparisons. Don't get me wrong I adore Fr.Ted and for sheer hilarity don't think it will ever be matched but I believe that the two have an essence which is similar.

The bit where Moone boy's dad called over to complain to the bullies dad was comic gold - Simon Delaney with his soft voice and beige polo neck sweater agreeing that his sons were awful and asking the other dad in.
As for Steve Coogan and his impeccable Roscommon accent -Francie "Touchy" Feely - a scream.
Well done Chris O Dowd, who'd a thought you had it in you?
    Will be watchin again.

This is on twice again tonight, they must be afraid people won't stick it out if they're going to condense all 6 episodes into 3 weeks.
