WIT Student behaviour - Lismore Park

As I write this I have been kept awake by about 20 students screaming and shouting and drinking in the middle of a somewhat elderly housing estate, if that was not enough out came the hurleys too and along came 7 taxi's all qued up beeping horns ready to take them into town to get twisted. Must be nice to be spending daddies hard earned cash so freely.

Oh well time to polish that old baseball bat and go late night mosquito swatting, hope no students get in the way :mad:

Call the Guards? Its now illegal to drink in public places. From what I read on Facebook, Templers is manic also but they have a private security firm at their disposal!

Rang them and they are short staffed and said they will be out but students left for town, guards said there was not a whole lot they can do. Don't know how they will ever hope to get a Uni here with this sort of bad publicity.

€75 on the spot fine if I remember correctly. The guards were well able to "warn" people about this while the spraoi was on. Now's the time to enforce it with the students

Before I start OP, I would just like to say I agree with you on those students being completely out of order.

But please do not paint all students with the one brush straight away at the start of the year, I'm 21, I finished college last year and a couple of friends of mine from my course lived in Lismore Park last year.

I was in the house with them a good few nights over the year and there were no complaints from neighbours. Quite the opposite, the immediate neighbours on either side told the landlord how much of a decent crowd they were (not loud/late/etc).

By the way, just on another note OP, "Spending Daddy's money"???? No. Like a lot of people in WIT, I earn my own money to spend, I do not get anything from govt to go to college either.

Fair play, I have no problem saying when students are good and we have had some last year in my area and it was great to see. But sadly there is always people who will ruin it for others. I do not want to paint all with the one brush but that is very hard to do when you have to be up early for work but can't sleep due to noise pollution.

had the same thing myself last night, i live in penrose lane and i know its not the best place anyway but i was woken up 2 or 3 times last night by students roaring and shouting around the street, its grand if they want to go out and have a good time but when they are going around acting like complete morons its a different story, and the evidence of students being back was all around the street this morning broken bottles and empty beer cans, the gaurds better cop on and start enforcing the no drinking in public places law soon.

Just want to put this out there for any students that can pass on the message:

The new public by-laws regarding drinking apply to the group, not the individual. So, if there are 10 people together and only 1 is drinking, it is taken for granted that all are drinking, ie: sharing. There is no recourse from this. It is putting the responsibility on all the people in the group to ensure that no-one is drinking in public.

So, if you're in a group or 10 and only 1 is drinking, all 10 will get the €75 fine or a summons/court appearance if you don't pay.

As for the Gardai responding, well, i think you should try and get in contact with someone who knows a Garda working the streets to see why there is a delayed response. Unfortunately, nothing i can post here.

Wednesday night, the 3rd night of the first week and we are off again. 40+ students partying on the street. Urinating on the middle of the street, shouting loud, heckling neighbours, littering other people's property and the street. Cops arrive in unmarked car and hunt them all in, one guy in particular was showing them he meant business and fair play they did stay till they all left and the police jeep arrived for good measure. The students only came back out to get into taxi's.

No doubt that this is a serious problem for not only my neighbourhood but others also. I am not sure what can be done but the cops did not issue any fines or warning despite plenty of anti social behaviour. While I do admire the way the cops hunted them off the streets I do think that maybe its time to have a zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour and I am not just on about students as all housing estates will no doubt have teens upto no good too. I know a lot of paper work is involved but it is part of their job and what worries me more is if this continues to happen then I can see students or neighbours losing it and someone being seriously hurt which no one really wants to see.

I hope to keep this post alive and hope other neighbourhood residents will share there stories too, I was young once myself and am all for celebrations and so one but never at someone else's expense and certainly not to make people feel unsafe and afraid at home.

We just have to listen to some in passing when theyre stumbling to/from town. Irritating fcukers. Its a bad thing when youre hoping for heavy rain to keep the fcukers in taxis -_-

Hmm wednesday...First student night of the year.Maybe keep an eye out your window or something and watch which houses they are in, call round next day introduce yourself ,ask for a name and report them straight to the college?.....sympathies to anyone who has to live in these areas, not a nice way to live for nine months of the year at all.

The owner of the house next to my missus years ago started renting to students, they were extremely loud, and obnoxious according to her dad who one fateful night kicked in the door of the house and ripped the stereo system off the wall. The students were in shock and were much better behaved after that night, for a while.

He also got into a few blazing rows with the owner and told him if he didnt stop renting to students he was going to burn the house down, and the owner was welcome to try prove it was him if he could!

The moral of the story is actually to go straight to the owner if you are having problems and tell them you are reporting them to the Gardai etc and if you think they may not be declaring the rental income tell them you will be reporting them to the tax man and rent board etc too.

I do not of course advocate the use of violence against them, unless you are sure there will be no witnesses

I really feel for you OP, I used to live over a student in a flat and it was a nightmare. Every fcuking night he'd go out, then bring half the nightclub home with him at 3am, shouting and screaming. I absolutely hated that noisy cnut...and I told him so, over and over

Thats is not at all helpful and has nothing to do with anything, poster. So what if not all students are troublemakers, thats the same old line wheeled out year after year from WIT officials when home owners are driven mad by the antics of scumbag students. It doesnt help the people who are suffering because of the sizeable minority of students who scream, hold late parties, double park etc. Some of them are little toerags who deserve nothing less than a severe beating.

And, I agree with the OP, that to be a student nowadays, what with the huge fees increase, you probably are leeching off mummy and daddy, pissing away their weekly allowances down the pub instead of using it wisely, so yes, a lot of the posh idiots need manners drilled into them. No good just saying that not all students are like that. We already knew that..

You are right in one way, students cause some load of trouble in this town but I can see where some students who dont drink and cause trouble could be coming from they might get some slack for being students because of the scumbags who mess about. But the students who are doing the messing need to be sorted out. They are causing alot of trouble between damaging property and being drunk keeping people awake etc.

It is the authorities fault really guards, W.I.T. etc, who do not do much to try and discourage this kind of behaviour. I have to deal with it the whole time where I live and luckily I can just up and move when I need too. It would suck to be someone who bought a house and trying to raise a family near all that.

Ok, can I start off by asking who the hell do you think you are?

Does it say ANYWHERE in my post that the OP is wrong? No. I started the post by saying I agree with him. If I was living beside a crowd like that I would say the same thing he is. And yes! Even when I was a student.

And secondly, "The same old line wheeled out year after year"? There's a reason it's "wheeled out" each year, people forget that it's a minority of students who act like this. The majority of students would agree with the OP in saying they are acting the complete and utter pr1ck.

And yes, I agree that what I'm saying does not help the OP in any way. I am merely defending my own corner, which I think is allowed, no? Now I don't know you at all, but lets just say for argument's sake that you are a bus driver. If I was to come on here giving out about bus drivers being ignorant drivers (not saying they are), would you sit back and say nothing? No, I doubt it.

Now lastly, this was the part that really got me p1ssed off, that all students are leeches by your logic. Yes, my parents paid my fees in college, and yes they did struggle at times to pay it. I did not go round "pissing away their weekly allowances down the pub instead of using it wisely". Yes I did go to the pub, I think that is also allowed. But I do not p1ss it away like sweet wrappers. I worked for my father all through school and college. I came back from college every day and went to work for a couple of hours, and if I didn't have class I would offer to work no problem.

So Wanderer, don't you DARE to try to tell me what I'm like or try to lecture me on my life. You do not know me, you do not know the first thing about me.

I wouldn't even think about saying some of the things you said to me, to someone else. I wouldn't bring myself down to that level.

I spent five years in University, and while there was certainly the odd party, I have never come across incidents like what seems to be now the norm in Waterford.

Is this behaviour linked to the calibre of students which WIT is currently able to attract - probably. There seem to be an awful lot of total mucksavages coming in from the likes of Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, and probably Waterford as well. You can even see they are nearly causing car crashes around town as a lot of them haven't driven on roundabouts before by the looks if ut.

What doesn't help in this debate is the blanket student bashing. Students make an important contribution to the economy both during and after their studies. They keep the rental market in Waterford afloat, keep the pubs going during the week, and obviously pour a fair bit of money into the local shops.

A recent OECD report shows that as a male graduate I am likely to repay the Government's investment in my education six times over as a result of my ability to earn more and pay more taxes. Labelling me or others like me as a leech because I went to college would be very wide of the mark.

Hard to know what the quickest solution here is for Waterford, but a higher take up of campus accommodation is probably the long term solution.

Maybe a bit harsh, but the cultural deficit in WIT seems to be fairly large from what I can tell.

Fair enough no problem. There is no more people from outside cities and towns in WIT than there are in any of the other IT's in my opinion.
