They're just trying to segment it a bit more, but you're probably right. Most programs wouldn't see any difference between those CPUs at the same speed.

If you look at the quad core its almost identical to the Octacore - I think something fishy is going on :D

nothing wrong with that. AMD are usually lazy to laser off links, so you might get to unlock these.

Anyone know much about the Club3D GPUs? Their 7870 is 40 euro cheaper than the ASUS one.

Club3D are a european graphics card company. They are based in Amsterdam, and use the same exact card PCB's as powercolor branded cards do.

The prices on computeruniverse.net seem really good, but I don't think anyone else has bought from them.

Any chance you can keep track of how long shipping is, and the quality of the packaging? I'd really appreciate it :)

    will do

they are slow enough so far to post, plus their order management has been down for maintenance for the last 2 days now

Also they said stuff was instock but once you buy it and in order management they said they were out of stock

We're sorry if there was a misunderstanding regarding the availability
displayed on our website at the time of your order. The item was not marked
as "in stock" but as available on short notice (usually available from our
suppliers within 2-3 business days). We have in fact received new stock
today, and NOW the item is in stock, but that wasn't the case when you
placed the order, nor did it say so. But we apologize that due to a faulty
automated updat from the supplier a false supply period was suggested in the
    meantime.

they have good customer care and great english over the phone too

    Nope :D. It's Hardware discussion.

Anyway, anyone up to buy a HD7990? For the special price of €999.99(.9999999999) you can have a Powercolour Devil13 HD7990 from Mindfactory.de

    Link

the real interesting thing there is the expected delivery date, 6/9/2012. more 7990's around then i hope?

€999 is kinda taking the piss though. its just not going to be as good as a gtx 690.

It looks nice though, and the weird thing is ASUS is planning to release their ARES II (7990) and their MARS III (GTX 690) cards soon, and they have said the ARES is the stronger performer.

It's supposed to be using reference 7970 clocks, and I presumed GTX 680s were definitely stronger than 7970s? Maybe the AMD chips perform better when crossfired on the same PCB?

    YAvxI.jpg
The picture of the engineering sample shows new yellow/black cooler, which is purportedly prepared to be mounted on the ASUS ARES 2 graphics card. Surprisingly the card is even reported to be faster than MARS III, which I’m sure will be determined in near future.

Disappointing. €1k is completely taking the piss, especially as its still 3GB per card. If I was spending that on cards, I would stick another €200 and (try to)get a pair of TOXIC 7970's.

€1k would get you two stock 7970's with decent waterblocks as well..

I will grind on with my pissy 6990 rather then blow €1k on that.......lol

21:9 (7:3/2.33:1) monitor anyone?. I think this would be close to my ultimate monitor, I've tried a triple monitor setup but it wasn't for me. IMO it was too wide (16:3/5.33:1) and there was too much of a performance hit and the bezel no matter how thin really annoyed me. A curved display with an aspect ratio of 3:1 and at least 1440 horizontal lines would be my ultimate but this is a step in the right direction.

Cool idea, but it wouldn't look great. I think 16:9 is pretty good as is, and btw 2560x1080 isn't as good as 2560x1440

TBH I couldn't care less about 3D, 1ms response time etc; I just want moar pixels.

same. not impressed by the res at all tbh. after getting my catleap, I've realised resolution is everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,775 ✭✭✭✭Gbear

My HDTV (which is in fact my sister's who's currently house-hunting) will be taken away from me soon.

Are those Catleap monitors good value for money? What's the least you can pay for 1440p?

    Dam' straight they're good value!

For comparison I think the next one up is the Dell U2711 which to be fair is of flawless build quality, backed by great Dell support and has a great stand, connections etc.

    It's €600 on Komplett.ie though.

That looks ridiculous. 16:9 actually took me some getting used to as it was. On the other hand, surround gaming/video is really immersive, so yeah if you don't want to go as far as eyefinity. I wonder would the human eye have enough reach for three of these at desktop distance.

All these ultra wide monitors are moot - VR is the future!

All I'll say is 120hz is everything :D

Loaded up L4D2 for a change, getting constant 119 fps " 5936 x 1080 (limited w/afterburner) and oh sweet jebus its so smooth.:D

    Jaysus they're expensive.

I'll stick with the wee little 1080p ones you get as standard with PC's. We've got about a million of them knocking around.

    Sorry, I meant the U2711 is €600.

    The Catleaps are €300

Guys I have some 120mm fan not a specific brand but some cheap fans I got off ebay.

This fans have a molex connector, but if I connect it to a mobo using a molex to floppy cable would I be able to change the speed o the max setting ?

GTX 660 and GTX 650 inbound! September 6th appears to be the date.

    Article:
According to the site, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 660 and GTX 650 will be released on September 6th, which was rumored a month ago. These two cards are probably the last two expected from current Kepler series. NVIDIA will fill the gap with another iteration of Kepler GK104 GPU and entry-level GK107. Last week NVIDIA added the specification of GeForce GTX 660 OEM, which will likely be the same for retail market.

While the GTX 650 will be rather a slow card, the GTX 660 might be an interesting addition to the whole line-up. The non-Ti version should target Radeon HD 7800 series performance segment. The fact that GeForce 650 received the GTX branding suggest that NVIDIA is currently not planning any GTS model, but if it does, it would be slower than GTX 650. On the other, it’s quite obvious that NVIDIA will prepare another variants of GTX 660 (SE, 128-bit, 960 cores etc), because there’s still no counterpart for Radeon HD 7700 series from NVIDIA and noticeable gap betwen these two cards — 384 to 1152 CUDA cores .

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 will feature 1GB of GDDR5 memory (GT 640 has GDDR3), which will be clocked at 5GHz (128-bit bus). This card will not have a boost clock, while the base clock is reported at 1058 MHz.

It’s still not clear how much will those cards cost, but the GTX 650 could cost around $150, while GTX 660 $220.

You can't change the speed if it's connected to a molex cable. Unless it has a speed switch on it.
If it has a small three pin connector, you can connect it to the motherboard and sometimes change the speed, depending on the board. Do not connect both the three pin and the molex connector!
You might get options in the BIOS to configure fan control. If there isn't, speedfan might help you out. It's a little tricky to use, especially since the fans aren't labelled, so you have to test each one, but it often works well if set up correctly.

I hope the GTX 560 is good. It's ridiculous that we haven't had a good card in the €100-200 region this generation. The 6870 has been fading away and the 560 just isn't good value.

You shouldn't do it because fans are designed for one or the other. You can damage/destroy a motherboard if you do it.

I'm not sure what you mean.
