I think they probably felt burned by the whole Comolli experience. He added nothing and spent a lot of cash. From their perspective, you're right...new man in to work to a tighter budget. All depends on the quality of the coaching set up for me now, we urgently need home grown talent.

I think that's why they have Ayre running that side of things now. He was there before Comolli and has no real ties to the on the pitch performance but he understands exactly what our financial position is so he knows what we can and can't afford to do. I'm actually glad he is in charge of it.

Liverpool have decided to leave captain Steven Gerrard, star striker Luis Suarez and key defenders Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson out of their trip to Hearts.

Also absent from the squad for Thursday's Europa League play-off is left-back Jose Enrique, who missed Saturday's defeat at West Bromwich Albion with a knee injury.

Joe Cole, who came off injured at The Hawthorns, is also not travelling while new signing Oussama Assaidi is ineligible as he featured for former club Heerenveen in an earlier round.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has made little secret of the fact his priority since arriving at Anfield is the Premier League and he has seemingly decided to rest his stars.

After the hugely disappointing defeat against West Brom, next on the agenda for Liverpool is a tough game against champions Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

And with a further testing domestic fixture-list, which includes home games against Arsenal and Manchester United with a trip to Sunderland in between, Rodgers is taking no chances.

Liverpool would need to play 19 games to win the Europa League and when asked if there is a need to use all members of the squad, assistant manager Colin Pascoe told the club's official website: "Definitely, and that's the way you've got to look at it.

"With the squad and the players we have got here, it's fantastic so you have to rotate the players because you play on a Saturday, then a Thursday and a Sunday. So it's an opportunity for all the players to perform."

But Liverpool are not underestimating their game against Scottish Cup winners Hearts at Tynecastle.

Pascoe said: "Again, it's one of those banana skins and it's a great pull for them to play Liverpool.

"We are looking forward to it. It's two legs and we are going to be positive and try to win the tie up there, and then bring them back to Anfield for the same again."

So who's in the squad that left? Carroll to start perhaps?

Wouldn't it only be for the qualifying rounds though?

I'd like to see Coates play as an audition for the City game. I've nightmares about Carragher on Sunday!

    Oussama Assaidi is ineligible.

Morocco winger Assaidi, who became the club's third summer signing last week, is cup tied having featured for Heerenveen in the qualifying rounds.

I was just scanning Assaidi's wiki page, is someone taking the piss editing this or did Rodgers really mean Assaidi when he was talking about "an exciting player". If so, youve got to be kidding me.

On 17 August 2012, Premier League side Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Assaidi for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £2.4m.[4][5] Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the deal, saying that he was "delighted", and described Assaidi as "an exciting player...that will excite the crowd"

I don't think so. It seems from those who have followed his career say the same.

Are you confusing 'exciting player' with 'player you've heard of'?

For those wondering, Im referring to the now infamous quote after Rodgers first presser where he talked about new signings & bringing in one player in particular who would "excite the fans". This has been discussed on here ad naseum since, with people speculating as to who he meant.

If he meant Assaidi this whole time. . . well thats a big let down. Still its probably just wiki bollox.

Presumably he meant this player would excite the fans when they were watching the football (referring to skills and abilities) as opposed to exciting fans clamouring for a big-name signing before this player gets to kick a ball.

Baring in mind this is all hypotheticals based on a wiki page. . . but Ill bite.

Do you feel Assaidi merited a special mention amongst our incoming signings as an especially exciting player?

Do you think perhaps most would have jumped to the conclusion that it might have been a big(ish) name player & that making a comment like that about a player 99% of the fanbase had never heard of was perhaps setting the supporters up for a letdown? & maybe saying nothing would have been a better strategy in this instance.

I thought Rodgers said that about a mystery player that they were working on in June.....nothing to do with Assaidi

It was probably Sahin or Tello.

who do you believe me none of them enjoy

Ben Smith, Oliver Kay and Duncan Jenkins said he was on his way here, literally a done deal. Announcement the next day. They're reliable to us.

All along Marca had reported Jose wanted Sahin to go to Liverpool.

SoyMadridista then reported he had cleared out his locker and was on his way to LFC.

YoungGunsBlog, AFCAMDEN, DarrenArsenal1, bbcsport_david reported Arsene had rang him and convince him to join them. They're reliable for Arsenal.

Various media outlets reporting Arsenal deal has stalled over a buy clause at the end of the deal. Gary Jacob from the Times reported Arsenal looking at other targets.

Pictures of Sahin in training this morning with Real Madrid.

Press conference with Jose (didn't even mention a deal was close with anyone)

SoyMadridista now reporting Jose has told Sahin if he joins Arsenal he won't play for Real again, he has to join LFC if he leaves on loan.

    oh FFS
Mourinho said this also today apparently "I couldn't care less if he goes to Arsenal, or Liverpool or Tottenham. I have no preference."

He'll end up at AC Milan now or somewhere.

Seriously, we need to stop talking about Sahin on here.
