Yes, a bit of gentle mocking was the 'point'., emphasis on the word 'gentle'

I didn't mean to be offensive and I apologise to anyone who was offended by my post. Honestly, I was just trying to highlight how silly the whole thing is.

I'm not calling for it to be banned or anything - I just think it should be open to ridicule like anything should.

IIRC it's generally one of the highest rated programme shown on RTE annually or at least it was a few years ago. So it is popular.

Probably because it's an excellent opportunity for some drinking games.

    "I spent 3 months in <disadvantaged country>" - DRINK!
"My ambition is to be a social worker" - DRINK!
"I'd like to say hello to xxx at home" - DRINK!
    "My mother/father/grandparent/sibling died recently" - DRINK 3!!
Daithi O'Se makes an inappropriate remark - for hardcore drinkers only, or you'll be paralytic in half an hour...

I have never seen the Rose of Tralee thingy on TV (or anywhere else)

    Am I bad? :o

    You're missing out IMO.

For me it's one of the televisual highlights of the year - as a fan of cringy comedy and of all things Irish, the Rose of Tralee is better than the Olympics, the Galway Races, the All-Ireland and the Ploughing Championships combined.

    ^ this, in a nutshell.

Rose takes off her shoes to do a wee bit of a dance and gets Daithi to hold her shoes - DRINK

Country is in chaos with budget cuts but there's 60 Gardaí in the orchestra pit playing tubas in full dress uniform - DRINK

At least they don't have a crowd of men standing around and objectifying them like that 'take me out' show.

I completely agree with you except that you're wrong and that post was brilliant.

Do they still have escorts? Seriously don't get that, I guess it was a nice touch when all the contestants were virginal maidens but half of them are in relationships these days, seems slightly demeaning to assign them some random dude to look after them. Though taking part is pretty demeaning in itself tbf...

It's a bit like Crufts only for women.

I think The Rose of Tralee should be more like Crufts with the women having to jump little fences and have their teeth examined etc.

It was also hilarious and blatantly ridiculous, that might not be apparent to a humourless agenda hound :)
I haven't watched this spectacle in years, but I remember the embarrassing little 'acts' the girls would perform - reciting a poem (especially cringe worthy if they had penned it themselves), playing a musical instrument and, best of all the dancing, complete with the presenter taking off their shoes.

It does bear an uncanny resemblance to having a dog jump through hoops. Also, examining dogs for the traits of their breed is reminiscent of the ways the contestants backgrounds are examined - Irish connection, education, profession etc - they're all from middle class backgrounds. And, lets not forget the altruistic aspirations all these 'wholesome' girls gush about while on stage.

Can't believe I can't bring this punchline home.:(

I think it's this. If Bluewolf corrects me I'll delete this post.

I great kick out of 'blaming' my sister for that. :pac:

That's actually more surreal than the savage eye clip someone put up

So it's that time of the year again, the cringefest that is the Rose of Tralee. Personally I don't watch it, in fact given the choice between watching it or gnawing off my own foot, I'd rather gnaw off my own foot.

The embarrassing Daithi and the string of spiral permed, giggling, simpering twats that parade their awful poetry and God forbid Irish dancing. The God awful cheeky chappy escorts that have been draughted in from Gaa clubs all over the country.

So do you support the Rose of Tralee or do you think it's time to put it out to pasture once and for all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Not watched it in years tbh. I'm sure some people like watching it but it seems a bit outdated to me the whole "Come on up here girls til we get a look at ye and see if we can knock a bit of craic out of ye" format.

Then again I'm sure the festival is paramount to the local economy so no harm letting it continue

It's a mingefest these days. Wall to wall pussy. Well worth a watch.

what annoys me is when they mention their great great great great grandad who moved to wherever 200 years ago so that makes them Irish:mad:

Yip, tis annoying alright, but lots of people watch it and it aids the local economy, so whatever, live and let live with the TV off.
