You're joking, right? That post is not in the least bit offensive.

'Three cheers for the lovely girls' in your OP was a tad condescending too, if that's the case.

Most of us mock the Rose of Tralee - surely that was the point in starting a thread in AH's?

As a woman, I object to this. All of it.

I don't know exactly why but it's just all very objectionable.

Yes, a bit of gentle mocking was the 'point'., emphasis on the word 'gentle'

It was also hilarious and blatantly ridiculous, that might not be apparent to a humourless agenda hound :)

It's completely daft. The bit where the 'lovely girls' have to do a thing is bloody hilarious.

It's starkly contrasted by our warrior women like Katie Taylor who earn credit on pure merit instead of obtuse things like looks and being able to recite a poem.

I haven't watched this spectacle in years, but I remember the embarrassing little 'acts' the girls would perform - reciting a poem (especially cringe worthy if they had penned it themselves), playing a musical instrument and, best of all the dancing, complete with the presenter taking off their shoes.

It does bear an uncanny resemblance to having a dog jump through hoops. Also, examining dogs for the traits of their breed is reminiscent of the ways the contestants backgrounds are examined - Irish connection, education, profession etc - they're all from middle class backgrounds. And, lets not forget the altruistic aspirations all these 'wholesome' girls gush about while on stage.

I live 20 miles from Tralee and avoid the town like the plague when this crap-fest takes place each year.

Forgot about that, only in Ireland could a show like that continue into the 90s.
Apparently it was only stopped because some of the winners were cheating and working outside the home.

Oh great it's that time of year again. It's a ridiculous specimen of so called entertainment.

As opposed to the rest of the year when it's a superb cultural and entertainment location?

Stella wella away. Total waste of time although it brings a few quid in to Tralee so I guess it has some positive aspects.

What would be more interesting is the TV adverts during it to see what corporations are happy to be associated with the objectification of women.

It seems very much like any other Irish town that I've visited, except Killarney.

The Rose of Tralee - It's all just a load of typical middle class codology! Daddy is a lawyer and mummy is a doctor and I have majored in history and languages and I love horse-riding, sailing and squash! What a load of crap!

I think it's this. If Bluewolf corrects me I'll delete this post.

I great kick out of 'blaming' my sister for that. :pac:
