Some of this years calves finally get a bellyfull of aftergrass, not really sure where they go next though.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

    Hi Stan

What horse power of a tractor do you use to work the mole plough?

I'll be interested to hear how it works out. Have you used the mole plough much, found it to be good?

115 in the wet- when its dry my tl90a 2wd will pull it-

mole ploughed eight days ago and field nearly dry enough to reseed-i havent mole ploughed for 8 years-big mistake

plan to do 20%of farm every year

Thanks Stanflt. Sounds like a cost effective solution when it works. What kind of soil do you think it works and doesn't work in? I've two types on the farm. 1st is a few inches (8-12) of topsoil on top of clay, the 2nd is peat (don't know how deep!). I'd planned to do some gravel filled drains this summer but looks like it will be next year at this stage:rolleyes:

What size of a ball are you pulling behind the plough?
I have 25 acres to moleplough if it ever dries out. Need to test my new plough and fear that a 3" diameter ball may be too much for teh T5050 to pull in dauby ground.

Mole plough won't really work in peat - it needs to be able to make a channel with the ball for the water to flow through. In peat, the channel will close very quickly. Clay/daub ground can see the channel staying open for years - I have some still flowing after 10 years!!

I finally got around to reading the teagasc booklet on the Solohead thread. Article on drainage was good. Take home message: gravel drains for loose soil like peat, mole drains for firm ground like clay/daub.

....and all drainage is best done when the land is dry

My discussion group visited a farm with AAxFR cows using a CH bull and they were well impressed. I was disappointed to miss it but my real job that puts bread on the table beckoned

Yeah easy enough on those aa x cows but not on heifers or fr cows.

We put a ch bull on AAxbrfr cows two years ago and they had great calves, all white/yellow in colour. I think they are a very good cross.

    That's just showing off!!

Got the last of the home farm first cut mowed today. Just 12 acres on an outfarm to do now. Luckily I didn't take it up until the 25th of June, so its only really ready to cut now and will still be ok to cut in 2 or 3 weeks time. Need a bit of drying to get to it as its about 2 miles over land with no stone roadways. !!

I posted a pic of I have this year, just a few posts back. This years calf is mousey coloured. Previous years calves from this cow and same bull came deep red colour which really surprised me.
Sold bull calf off her last March, exactly 11 months old, weighing 460 kg. Made €1090. Not over pushed either. AA b friesian have great milk supply. Might try Parth on her this year.

I had my heart broke with RAT heifers when we were milking. They just didnt last the course at all with us. Great animals to pump out milk but no protein, couldnt hold condition to save their lives and rubish fertility. Obviously you had more luck with them then us Whelan!
