Dress Codes

I think a dress code is one of the things that golf is built around .... it promotes etiquette in my opinion - no offence to anyone intended - but wearing a soccer jersey playing golf is absurd ( unless you are on a driving range or a pitch n putt )

I am sorry but I think that is ridiculous. I don't wear a soccer jersey playing golf because my club doesn't allow it and I don't wear them anyway but when I am at home I do like to wear tracksuit bottoms and a comfortable hoody etc. My point is that when I am wearing these things I am the exact same polite, courteous person as I am when I am out playing golf. I don't think adhering to a dress code encourages someone to be more respectful to those around them.

It's like being surprised that an argument breaks out at a tinkers wedding due to the fact they're all wearing suits. It's not the clothes that are the reason someone adheres to the etiquette of golf, it's the person wearing them.

Au contraire my friend you're the ignorant one.
If you need someone to explain what a dress code is and why it's there then I'm afraid there really is no point.

You really are thick aren't you? Did I ask you to explain what a dress code is? Read my posts properly before replying with your irrelevant rubbish.

Has not been my experience, the etiquette of golf includes the dress code and it has happened all but too often when playing that the guy with a soccer jersey is speaking and laughing walking past when I am taking my tee shot...........................

For me I wear my soccer jerseys playing soccer, rugby jerseys playing rugby, work clothes doing work and golf clothes on the golf course!
Sorry dude, but I'd put that down to a bad experience. If somebody was talking or moving about while I was taking a shot I'd be fairly annoyed too, but I have the intelligence to understand that the clothes one wears, does not determine the behaviour one exhibits.

As for the second part of your post.... That's good for you!

You are correct... Dress code does promote etiquette. But if you bothered to take the time to read my post before pitching in with your 'absurd' opinion... The golf club in question has a relaxed dress code, I feel comfortable wearing my soccer jersey, and as the club permits it, it is my prerogative to do so. If said club banned the wearing of soccer jerseys, then it would remain in the wardrobe, but until then...:D

Is this the etiquette you speak of?

Weirdo, why do you wear a soccer jersey playing golf?, next you'll tell us you wear golf shoes playing soccer!.

Seriously lads, does anybody have any actual constructive viewpoints on this?

Do you know what etiquette is??

Adhering to a dress code if one exists, promotes/advocates/encourages (whatever word you want to use) etiquette.... It in no way guarantees that if I wear a polo shirt and a pair of golfing trousers that I will adhere to the behavioural expectations of the golf club...

On the flip side... Just because I wear my soccer jersey (when permitted), doesn't mean I'm going to leave divot marks, fail to repair pitch marks, leave bunkers unraked, disturb/distract other golfers....

Thats the main issue I have here, a certain few people seem to be of the opinion that someone who choses to wear an item of clothing that doesn't conform to their tastes, (although conforms to the club rules) should be refused entry onto a golf course.

    Honestly, I find that offending.

I do, however it appears that you do not, which, coupled with your attitude adds you to my ignore list.
If I could be bothered I would have posted a nice face palm picture here, but I couldnt, so I didnt.

Could you please post any evidence you have here which suggests that I do not know/understand golf etiquette?

Or is this something you have just decided to make up?

Honestly, the way some people on here, have preconceived notions without any logical rational is amazing.

To be fair I gave you a rational explanation to my "OPINION" based on personal experiences.

Before I started playing golf a couple of years ago, I had a preconceived notion that golf clubs were snobby becuase of the dress code and etiquette required etc, however since I began playing it became apparent to me that those who disobeyed the rules(which includes dress codes) also had severe problems with etiquette.

Your entitled to your opionion however but can we agree to disagree and move on with the thread....................

Fair enough... Apologies for going off on one. I just don't like to be stereotyped, based on the clothes I wear of all things...

Football jerseys belong in stadiums, sports shops and at best pucks castle.

Golf is built around etiquitte and to be quite frank if someone showed up to play with me in a jersey it would probably put me off my round because i believe it to be poor show by not respecting your club.

I think wearing a jersey is taking the "relaxed" dress code on your course to the limit.

Might i ask what club you're a member of?

Your attitude does that all by itself.

Hold on a second, I reared up because people were judging my character based on the fact that I sometimes wear a soccer jersey to a golf club where it is permitted! Do you understand that? It is allowed on the course.

Are you such a poor golfer that you would allow youself to be distracted by the shirt I was wearing? I'd be more worried, that you were concerned with my atire. Well that is your opinion. If my club doesn't prohibit wearing one, I fail to see how it is disrespecting my club.
    Again, that is your opinion.

    Druids Heath, next question?

You're right AJ, there's only 7 GUI registerd clubs in westmeath.

@leedslunatic: No im not, but have you such poor respect for your club and the sport that you wouldn't wear something that is more appropriate on a golf course? Are there many people on your course that wear jerseys or are you the only one?

@ Matt: I'm pretty sure LOFT was asking Leedslunatic the "same question" that you asked previously in the thread. Not, where you are a member ;)

This is getting exciting, where are you a member Leedslunatic?

You see this is where I take argument. I've already told you, numerous times infact, that this club has a relaxed dress code.

So if the club has no problem with me wearing a jersey when I go out for a round, what exactly is it that makes you think I have such poor respect?

I am a member of two other golf clubs in the Westmeath area, which do infact have strict dress code. I am more than happy to adhere to this when playing in these clubs... collared shirt, neat pants ect...

I'm being serious here, and trying to be constructive.... Do you think that even though this club permits the wearing of jerseys, that behind it all, the club does in fact take issue with me, and many others doing so?

Has it ever occured to you, that said club may have relaxed their dress code to encourage new people to take up the game, and increase membership numbers and generate revenue?

I guess its opinions - MY opinion is any Golf club worth its salt will not allow a soccer jersey or tracksuits to be worn...... You would see any tour events with Golfers wearing trackies or soccer jerseys?

Obviously I have nothing against soccer jerseys as I own many myself and love wearing them...just not golfing.

Great discussion bar some not called for insults !!!

remember YOUR opinion doesnt make you right ( Thats self reflective too )

I don't think it does though. So any club worth it's salt wouldn't allow someone to wear a jersey on the course. That's your opinion and that is fair enough.

But the fact is, his club does. So how is he being disrespectful to the club by wearing one?

I think he (and his club) are being disrespectful to the game of golf.
