Why not the indoor 50 or 60m so?

    That's a legitmate question.
I think the 100m has been picked as the perfect distance to sort out the question of 'who's the fastest' because it's probably been worked out that sprinters don't get into full stride and to their top-speed within 60 meters; they're usually hitting their top speed around the 80 metre mark and can either power on or go backwards from there.
There has to bit of latitude.
But you're right, i think, in wondering what distance would actually perfectly answer that question.
I'd say, though, that 100m is pretty much spot on.

For me it's the marathon, how those guys travel at that speed for that distance is as staggering as bolt running 9.64 tonight.
Watching the ladies marathon earlier they were nearly on the floor running up to the finish, and actually on the floor when they did. Personally not a fan of the street finish.
Finishing this great race away from the stadium takes away from the event, even though it's great to see the ordinary Joe on the streets cheering on the runners but there's something magical when the leader of the marathon enters the stadium to the cheers of the crowd.

Andy Murray and Laura Robson look very awkward together while being interviewed.

    Orange pilled.

Blake in particular has an impenetrable Jamaican accent :D

But Wow, how Bolt blew them all away, with all the doubts answered in just 9.63 seconds - unforgettable.

Terrible start and still winning in 9.63. Fastest man the world has ever seen by some margin!
Not a white man to be seen

There is only one white man who has ever run 100m in sub 10s. Once.

There are more than 70 black men who have done that. One of the finalists today has done it himself more than 80 times

And some still say there are no genetic differences between the races :)

Anyone know what time the sailing final is on tomorrow? Is it just one race?

just one race yes. It starts at between 1.00 and 1.30 is what I heard.

if she finishes in top 3 she is sure of medal or even if she finishes ahead of any of other 3 sailors who are within point of each other as its double scores. If she wins the race she wins Gold.

    Would take bronze now.

Not that I know much about sailing, but getting any medals are something special.

The great 200/400 meter sprinter Michael Johnson recently did a documentary on the BBC where he delved into this very subject!
His conclusion was that most (but not all) of the top sprinters in the world come from Jamaica and the USA, and to cut a long story short, the main theory was that those top sprinters are the descendents of slaves brought to the Caribbean/USA from West Africa, the journey by boat would invaribly result in many deaths on the arduous voyage, which left only the strongest as survivors - then those strongest survivours were bread with the previous batch of slave survivors, who were then mated with the strongest, etc etc etc etc, which did in effect lead to the black slaves being bread to be be the strongest/fastest for their masters plantations . . .

Its a very black subject (excuse the pun), but this breeding programme done by the white colonial masters hundreds of years ago "may" have resulted in the modern day superiority of the black sprinter? (questionmark).

That's the gist of Michael Johnson's BBC documentary (aired only last week).

Lemaitre has done it 7 times. Plus he's run exactly 10 seconds, and as sprint times are rounded up, it's likely that it may have been 9.99x in reality. Marian Woronin of Poland and Koji Ito of Japan have both run 10 seconds dead, too.

Patrick Johnson of Australia ran 9.93. He's of Irish and Aboriginal descent.

The 5th-place finisher in the Vault is something of an unusual case, but good to see: Oksana Chusovitina has been competing at the highest level since 1990, has a team gold from the Barcelona 1992 Olympics and many European and World championship medals including a Silver in Tokyo last year, is a mother, and is still at it at the age of 37. (Who says you're over the horse at 18?)

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    Shamelessly stolen:

Congratulations to Britain's Andy Murray on his gold medal. Also, commiserations to Scotland's Andy Murray on his silver medal.

Oh I totally agree. But if she comes 4th who is going to remember her in 12 months?

Where as if she gets any medal she will be remembered as being medalist.

She can be extremely proud of her fantastic achievement even if she misses out tomorrow, but hopefully she get Medal and better still a Gold one.

BBC reporting on a bottle thrown at the athletes just before the start of the 100m, man arrested apparently.

Noticed something odd about the start but didn't give it much attention at the time.

Looked like a Heineken bottle. An outrage! Not an official sponsor.
