The thought of running for a half an hour straight on that ground makes me shins hurt. Serious respect for those athletes.
Give me short bursts in sprints any day.

There seems to be a lot of world records falling at these Olympics and going by the women's sprint heats I think we are going to see another fall.

Assuming because of the advanced drug testing techniques and procedures I think the athletes are clean, so what has changed, is the new computer aided training techniques or are athletes just getting better. I find it puzzling.
I think evolution is the word you are looking for, as a species we are getting faster, taller and stronger -obviously not including myself in this category :D

No simply have not reached our peak speed yet even without further evolution.
You can test this with statistics. As we approach our theoretical fastest possible speed, the frequency with which world records are broken should decrease. If you draw lines of the frequency of world records being broke it is a pretty much still a straight line. We have alot more to go.

Apparently there was some tribe a couple of thousands years agao who they reckon would make Usain Bolt look like the fat kid catching up at the rear. They know this from fossilised footprints - the distance between them, depth etc gives you indications of speed.

One is forced to wonder if shoes and modern lifestyles have slowed us down.

Can't be as bad as concrete/tarmac can it ? Loads of people do that.

Id like to see some of those "undiscovered tribes" run in all the events and clear stuff like hurdles without noticing them, barefoot.

No it can't be I'd say.

It's been a long time since I ran without any pain so I forget what it's like...

Of course they could. Why is that so hard to believe ?!?!? Humans didn't evolve to wear shoes. Our feet as a result are relatively underdeveloped compared to barefoot people.

I would really love to see Ireland winning a medal (of any colour). The sense of pride is so immense and I really would love the whole country to get a lift from it. GO TEAM IRELAND. YOU CAN DO IT!

I hope Annalise Murphy can pull it out of the bag for us this weekend!
John Joe and Katie in the boxing. Any other hopefuls?

Right back home, with an 8 pack of hino, I barely got to the finish line but I could feel the support of this tread behind me and that gave me the extra strength I needed to slap the cans on the counter with with only 10 second to spare.

Thank you Olympic thread for the support I couldn't have done it without you's I dedicate these cans to all of you's,

    Crack and slurp ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

    LOL I love the olympics.
